Broward College Faculty Technology Mentoring Project for Student Engagement So MANY Mentees...so MUCH fun...! Mentor Application Mentor: A faculty member who works one-on-one with one or two other faculty members to assist them in developing projects to enhance their use of technology to engage students in and out of the classroom. Application Due: Friday, September 16, 2011 Please this completed application to mdiaz@broward.edu PLEASE TYPE IN THE GRAY INPUT BOXES BELOW; THEY WILL EXPAND AS YOU TYPE. Name: Department: Campus: Phone: Fax: PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The objective of the Faculty Technology Mentoring Project for Student Engagement (FTMPSE) is to increase the number of BC faculty using technology to engage students, enhance student learning, and increase the skills of faculty already using technology. Faculty with less developed technology skills (Mentees) are individually matched with faculty technology Mentors, who share knowledge, guide learning, and support Mentees in the development of one or more projects. The FTMPSE offers the advantage of flexible scheduling and individualized assistance by the faculty colleague Mentor. The FTMPSE project runs from October 2011 through April At the end of Term , Mentors who have assisted one Mentee will receive $1250 in compensation in the form of either equipment or cash (from which income tax will be deducted); Mentors who have assisted two Mentees will receive $2500 in compensation in the form of either equipment or cash (from which income tax will be deducted). The products from each project will be tagged and uploaded to the Orange Grove, Florida s digital repository for educational content. To ensure that each faculty project focuses on student engagement, the projects must integrate the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) benchmarks for active and collaborative learning strategies, student effort, academic challenge student-faculty interaction, and support for learners. The CCSSE benchmarks are attached to the last page of this application. PLEASE NOTE: If the number of Mentee applications exceeds the number of faculty we can compensate as Mentors, we will still make every effort to help as many faculty in as many disciplines and on as many campuses and centers as possible. If you have any questions concerning the FTMPSE or this application, please contact Project Manager Prof. Mary Di Stefano Diaz at ext or via at mdiaz@broward.edu.

1. Please answer each of the following questions (For YES/NO questions, please doubleclick on the appropriate boxes and choose Checked as the Default value). Can you demonstrate that you have the interest, time (approximately 2-4 hours per week per Mentee), and patience to assist a fellow faculty member with limited or no technology skills? How many hours per week are you willing and able to commit to assisting Mentees? Please list a range of hours, e.g. 2-4, in the gray box. The Faculty Technology Mentoring Project builds collaborative communities. To qualify as a Mentor, you must attend one introductory meeting with your Mentee(s) on his/her/their campus(es) during Fall Term , 2:30-4:00 PM, on either Oct. 17 (rth), Oct. 18 (Central), or Oct. 19 (South) and one progress meeting during Winter Term (times and dates TBD). Do you agree to participate in the two required campus meetings? If you cannot attend the required meetings listed above, please consider re-applying as an FTMPSE Mentor during another academic year. To qualify as a Mentor, you must also attend the FTMPSE Expo at the Welcome Back Marketplace on the first non-teaching duty day before the beginning of Fall Term Will you attend the FTMPSE Expo? Please check yes or no. If you cannot agree to attend the FTMPSE Expo, please consider re-applying as a Faculty Technology Mentor during another academic year. 2. Please check the skills that apply to your technological expertise in which you feel comfortable mentoring a faculty colleague. (Please double-click on the appropriate box(es) and choose Checked as the Default value). Use of Microsoft Office Suite tools to enhance faculty productivity, course materials creation, classroom presentations, course management, and support materials. Use of online Web 2.0 tools such as Google Pages and blogs to create a content-rich, media-rich faculty Web site that supports one or more courses and is focused on student engagement and student success. Use of online cloud-based applications such as Epsilen to create a content-rich, media-rich faculty Web site/wiki that supports one or more courses and is focused on student engagement and student success. Use of integrated Web 2.0 tools such as igoogle to create content-rich, media-rich course components that support one or more courses and are focused on student engagement and student success. Use the Desire2Learn learning management system exclusively to support Web-enhanced courses and increase student engagement. Such support will include, among others, enhancing classroom management and efficiency, creating a paperless classroom, creating an electronic

grade-book, using communication tools, creating learning modules, and integrating student learning outcomes for one or more courses. This use of Desire2Learn supports face-to-face on-campus (not fully online) courses. Creation/design of new blended (hybrid) e-learning or fully online courses is NOT an outcome of the Faculty Technology Mentoring Project for Student Engagement. This Mentor opportunity is available only to BC internally certified or externally QM-certified faculty members who have authored at least one fully online or blended/hybrid course. Use of digital imaging software and/or photography to acquire and modify/resize digital images for use in PowerPoint presentations, Web pages, or in other instructional contexts. Development of original audio and video content to support student engagement and success. This content may be distributed via multiple outlets including streaming or podcasting or embedded into PowerPoint, Web pages, or other digital media. Re-designing and improving an existing fully online or blended/hybrid e- learning course using BC Quality Standards for e-learning Course Design so that the course meets ALL forty (40) standards and is eligible for BC internal Quality Matters certification (see QualityStandards.pdf). This Mentor opportunity is available only to BC internally or externally QM-certified faculty members who have authored at least one fully online or blended/hybrid course. Upon completion of the project, the course will be reviewed/approved by a BC instructional designer for BC internal certification. Creation of engaging, interactive teaching, learning, and assessment strategies using Classroom Performance Systems (a.k.a. clicker ) technology. Create and develop teaching applications that embrace and maximize the use of tablet technology including Tablet PCs and ipads. I have the following additional areas of technology proficiency (Type your response in the gray input box; the box will expand as you type.)

3. Please respond to the following questions as completely as possible. (Please type in the gray input box; the box will expand as you type.) A. Why do you want to become a Faculty Technology Mentor? B. In which of your technological areas of expertise would you most like to mentor colleagues? C. How would you motivate a Mentee to continue if s/he expressed frustration, became distracted, or stopped working with you during the completion of his/her project? Thank you for your interest in the BC Faculty Technology Mentoring Project! CCSSE Benchmarks Student engagement is the amount of time and energy that students invest in meaningful educational practices. (CCSSE) Technology projects developed under the Faculty Technology Mentor Project for Student Engagement focus on the use of existing and emerging technologies that increase student engagement and success. Five engagement benchmarks can frame project proposals to help guide their development and outcomes, namely: 1. Active & Collaborative Learning Does the project provide active and collaborative learning such as working with other students, making a presentation, incorporating interactive possibilities for discussion and contribution? Example: Use of emerging and cloud-based technologies that significantly raise the opportunities for collaborative, active learning. 2. Student Effort Does the project encourage student effort? For example, will students work on a project that requires research beyond the class timd? Does the project provide an opportunity for students to come better prepared to class, i.e. practicing skills or other related activities? Example: Use of emerging technologies to provide transformative and higher level cognitive work from students through collaborative learning.

3. Academic Challenge Does the project encourage students to work harder than they might have perceived in order to meet the professor s standards and expectations? Does the project assist in analyzing elements of ideas, experience or theory? Example: Use of emergent technologies to enable opportunities for students to work with subject area experts from around the globe. 4. Student-Faculty Interaction Does the project encourage communication between students and faculty? Will it provide prompt feedback on performance? Example: Use of social media to extend communication and discussion. 5. Support for Learners Does the project provide support beyond existing frameworks to help students succeed on learning outcomes? Example: A series of mathematics video tutorials that provide opportunities for supporting student learning and success on learning outcomes. Publication to the Orange Grove The Orange Grove is Florida s digital repository for educational content. Projects from the FTMPSE will, where possible and applicable, be added to the repository as part of Broward College s collection. The option to share the project beyond the College s collection (i.e. state-wide or open to all) will be an option for the creator. Sample Project Dr. Ellen Glazer served as FTMPSE Mentor to South Campus librarian Prof. Lori Albrizio. The project outcome was a customized learning object for supporting students completing assignments requiring adequate information literacy skills. Prof. Albrizio s presentation on her project is located at and has also been added to the Orange Grove digital repository. Prof. Albrizio s project meets several of the above engagement benchmarks. In particular, the outcome encourages student effort and academic challenge through development and practice of higher level cognitive and research skills, using both Web 2.0 and current technologies as the media. The use of video provides additional support for students through an engaging, highly sensory environment that addresses multiple learning styles. The project can be readily added to Broward College s Orange Grove collection. I can't WAIT to get started!
