4 Windows Storage Server 2012 is a Windows Server Operating System. It acts and performs just like a fullfeatured Windows Server using all of the Server resources including Server Manager. WSS can only be purchased via Microsoft OEM licensing, and Buffalo is a strategic Microsoft OEM partner. 8 Data Deduplication Windows Storage Server 2012 Standard Edition available on TeraStation 5400R WSS and 5600D WSS systems includes Data Deduplication support. This powerful feature removes duplicated data stored on the TeraStation NAS. Unlike WSS 2008 R2 s SIS, WSS 2012 s Deduplication can go into files and deduplicate data inside of files. Typical office deduplication savings of 2x or more are realistic. Using Buffalo PPT, Excel and Word data that I have on my shared drive, I was able to save over 52% storage utilization with this feature.

9 Data Deduplication Companies of all sizes are continually producing more data and are under increased requirements to retain data longer. On average, in file storage environments, Data Deduplication can deliver 30-90% decreases in disk space usage. Common references: Home Directories Users documents folders that are stored on a NAS share often contain redundant documents, newsletters, images, etc. Team Shares Collaboration or team shares often contain many duplicated documents inside of them as well as with other teams shares. Software Archives ISOs, service packs, and installation files all have many commonalities in them. Virtual Machines VMs are often built on the exact same OS, using identical management software, anti-virus software and other common software. This creates huge amounts of redundant storage. WSS 2012 Deduplication dedupes down to 32 KB chunk commonality within files, so deduplication works across archives, VMs (archived), Databases, PSTs, etc.

12 Installing Data Deduplication Installing and activating WSS Deduplication is simple: 1. Open Server Manager 2. Add Roles and Features 3. Role based Installation 4. File & Storage Services a) File and iscsi Services b) Enable Data Deuplication 5. Restart Server

14 Data Deduplication Q&A Q: Does Data Deduplication run inline or in post-process A: It runs as a post process using mostly idle CPU process. Additionally, it can be scheduled to run at specific times to not interfere with network and user performance. Q: How does Data Deduplication run at the file system level (NTFS) but deduplicate data inside of files? A: It breaks files into 32 KB chunks and compares those chunks against chunks throughout the file system and removes identical copies by storing one and creating symbolic links. Q: How does Deduplication affect users and administration of files? A: Deduplication and deduplicated files appears as normal files on an NTFS file system. Users open, edit and save files just as before, and users have no idea the file is deduplicated. If a user modifies a file, a new copy will be placed in the file system and the symbolic link to the old file is removed. Q: How can I check my system s deduplication potential? A: Powershell the following command: DDPEVAL.exe <destination drive or CIFs share> /V DDPEVAL.exe d:\users /V -OR- DDPEVAL.exe \\TeraStation\users /V Q: Can Deduplication run on Databases or Running VHDs? A: Data Deduplication should not be run on data files that have continuous IO activity or highperformance requirements. Mounted SQL DBs, running VHDs and Exchange DBs will not be Deduplicated, but backups of these items would be be deduplicated.
