Supports all workload types.
Page 4 of 10 Melio Virtualization Melio Virtualization provides multiple Hyper-V hosts with concurrent block-level access to virtual machine (VM) files stored on a single LUN. Melio Virtualization simplifies the management of VM storage while supporting Live Migration and improving the performance and scalability of Hyper-V deployments. Melio Virtualization also supports VMware Server 2.0, allowing multiple VMware Server hosts to share block-level access to a single LUN containing all virtual machine files. Deploying Melio Virtualization with VMware Server 2.0 greatly simplifies the management of VM storage while offering administrators the flexibility to start VMs on different host systems to achieve greater utilization of underlying physical resources. Software Components Melio File System Melio FS is a 64bit symmetrical cluster file system that provides multiple servers with simultaneous read/write access to data stored on the same storage partition or Logical Unit Number (LUN) on a SAN. As an all-purpose cluster file system, Melio FS supports access to all valid data types and file types stored on the LUN and can support LUNs as large as 18 million Terabytes (TBs). Employing advanced transaction managers, a symmetrical architecture, full journaling, and dynamic clustering capabilities, Melio FS ensures that the integrity of the data stored on a shared LUN is never compromised by controlling read/write access by multiple servers at all times. LaScala Volume Manager LaScala is a host-based cluster volume manager that incorporates advanced transaction management, locking, and clustering technology, to simplify management and improve the flexibility of shared storage environments. Using LaScala, multiple hosts can access and administer storage volumes spanning multiple storage controllers, and host access to volumes can be defined using native Windows security tools such as ACLs and Active Directory. LaScala is now included in all Melio Product Suites and provides high performance shared access to data on volumes striped across many disks residing on multiple heterogeneous storage controllers. AppCluster Manager AppCluster software is a solution for managing active-active clusters of SQL Servers in conjunction with Sanbolic s cluster file system. This new product is part of Melio Datacenter and provides ease of management, large cluster sizes, high availability, rapid failover and load balancing of database workloads across multiple physical or virtual SQL servers accessing a single SAN LUN that contains multiple data stores.
Page 5 of 10 FilerScaler Manager FilerScaler is included in Melio Datacenter and provides centralized management and provisioning of Windows file shares across an entire IT enterprise. From a single management interface, all existing file shares can be managed, new shares can be created, permissions can be modified, and the status of each share can be monitored. In addition, tasks such as setting share permissions can be greatly simplified using templates which are incorporated into the FilerScaler management console. Simple Information Life Cycle Management (SILM) SILM, or Simple Information Life Cycle Management, is now included in all Melio Product Suites. SILM automatically copies or moves files or volumes based on user-defined policies. For example, a storage administrator could establish policies to copy any files created or modified in the past 4 hours to a backup volume and to move any files not accessed in 30 days to secondary storage. SILM offers universal connectivity support, allowing it to be deployed in mixed storage environments that include DAS, NAS, and SAN storage and supports both Microsoft and Sanbolic file systems.
Page 6 of 10 Breakdown of Feature Support This section offers a comparison of the supported features and configurations for each product; allowing readers to determine which product or products would prove most beneficial for their particular storage environment. Feature definitions: Cluster size The number of nodes that can access a single LUN formatted with Melio FS. Storage size The total amount of storage shared by all the nodes participating in a cluster. File System size Refers to the architecture of the file system (i.e., 32bit, 64bit). File Types The types of files that can be written to/read from the file system. Distributed File System (DFS) Available in Microsoft Windows server-based operating systems, DFS, or Distributed File System, allows administrators to group shared folders residing on remote computers and present them to users as a virtual tree of folders known as a namespace. The benefits of a namespace include increased data availability, load-balancing and simplified data migration. Network File System (NFS) NFS, or Network File System, is a file system developed originally for UNIX and Linux operating systems that allows files to be shared transparently between servers, desktops, workstations, etc. Using NFS, a file system or a portion of a file system located on a remote computer can be mounted on a local computer, allowing a user of the local computer to view, update, and save files stored on the remote computer as if they were on the local system. Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) MSCS, or Microsoft Cluster Server, is software that runs on Microsoft Windows server-based operating systems that facilitates load-balancing and failover for systems participating in a cluster. With significant enhancements and numerous new features, MSCS was renamed Windows Failover Clustering in Windows Server RAID RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a set of hard disks that function as a single disk subsystem. Encompassing different levels (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 20, 50, etc.), RAID offers various degrees of read/write performance and/or failover protection.
Page 7 of 10 Network Load Balancing (NLB) NLB, or Network Load Balancing, is the name of the application load-balancing software available in Microsoft Windows server-based operating systems. Using NLB, client connections can be distributed across multiple servers, improving scalability and high availability for TCP/IPbased services and applications. Access Control Lists (ACLs) ACLs are policies designed to restrict access to a volume, directory, or file. Configured within Active Directory and deployed across the enterprise network, ACLs ensure that only specific nodes can access volumes, directories, or files. File System Resize File System Resize denotes the ability to modify (expand) the size of the file system dynamically (without the need to restart disk management services or reboot servers). Volume Expansion Volume Expansion allows administrators to dynamically extend the size of a volume without having to restart disk management services or reboot cluster nodes. With this feature, administrators can overcome the free space limitation by adding additional partition(s) to the volume when desired. Network Sharing Refers to the sharing of files among interconnected computers. NFS is used to share files amongst computers running UNIX or Linux and CIFS, or Common Internet File System, is used to share files amongst computers running Windows. Hypervisor support The ability to provide shared storage for Microsoft Hyper-V host machines. Virtual Machine support The ability to provide shared storage for Windows guest servers hosted by Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware ESX, or Citrix XenServer hypervisors. Remote Management Software that allows administrators to create, expand and manage storage volumes remotely from a central console. Quality of Service (QoS) Quality of Service (QoS) refers to various techniques used to prioritize access to storage based on the total amount of available throughput. Instead of relying on normal best effort mechanisms, Melio FS allows administrators to assign various levels of priority to specific servers regarding their access to a volume with respect to throughout. In addition, Melio FS also allows various levels of priority to be assigned to VHDs, ensuring that a certain amount of throughput will be available to access specific VHDs. By employing a point based system ranging from 1 (lowest priority) to 1000 (highest priority), Melio FS is able to dedicate storage throughput for servers or to VHDs with the highest levels of priority.
Page 8 of 10 Extended Attribute (EA) EA, or Extended Attribute, is a file system feature that allows users to associate computer files with metadata not interpreted by the file system. Open by File ID File ID is a 64bit reference number for a file. This number is assigned by and specific to a particular file system. An application can use a file_id to open the corresponding file. Max directory levels The maximum depth of nested folders or directories supported. Mount Points Originally found in UNIX and older minicomputer operating systems, mount points were developed to simplify storage management. A physical location in the directory structure on which the root directory of a volume is grafted, or mounted, mount points are persistent directories that point to disk volumes. In Windows OS, mount points resolve to the root directory of a particular volume. Cluster Affinity Cluster Affinity allows a specific cluster node (or group of cluster nodes) to keep the connection to a shared volume after it has lost communications with the remaining cluster nodes. Application Data Clustering The ability to have multiple servers host concurrent instances of an application (i.e., SQL, Microsoft SharePoint, etc.) respectively to facilitate load-balancing and high availability for that particular application. Volume Snapshot Service (VSS) A feature introduced with Windows Server 2003 and included in all current releases of Microsoft Windows that allows backup copies or snapshots of a file or folder on a specific volume to be taken at a specific point in time. Operating at the block-level, VSS allows for the creation of consistent backups of a volume, ensuring that the contents of a volume remain unchanged as a backup is being created. VSS functions in such a way as to avoid problems with file locking. By creating a read-only copy of the volume, backup programs are able to access every file without interfering with other programs writing to those same files. In addition, users can access their files as they existed at the time of the snapshot, allowing them to retrieve an earlier version of a file or recover a file deleted inadvertently. Pass-through I/O Used with Microsoft s Hyper-V server virtualization platform, Pass-through I/O allows data to be written to storage by virtual machines without requiring that all other Hyper-V hosts participating in the Windows Failover Cluster be notified that the data was written; reducing overhead and improving system performance.
