2 Front End Analysis Project Overview: Designs Solutions Inc., a graphic design company located in St. Petersburg, Florida, recently purchased Apple McIntosh laptops for it s Marketing Department. Because the company has historically used Windows-based personal computers (PC), the owner of the company has requested a computer based training (CBT) solution to offset the learning curve of transitioning from a Microsoft Windows environment to a Macintosh Leopard environment. Project Goal: The project goal is to teach Information Technology (IT) staff to install and set up a Virtual PC on a Macintosh computer and transfer Windows-based applications to the Macintosh using Parallels Desktop 3.0 for the Mac. Target Audience: The target audience for this project consists of two individuals from the Information Technology department. Both employees have bachelor degrees in Computer Information Systems and both have at least five years of hands-on technology experience. Cognitive characteristics: Both employees have prior knowledge setting up and installing computer hardware and software applications on Windows-based computers. Neither employee has background experience setting up or installing applications on Macintosh systems. Neither employee has

3 experience installing a Virtual PC environment. Physiological characteristics: The target audience consists of one male and one female, both in their late twenties. Neither employee has visual, hearing or other physical limitations. Affective characteristics: Both employees are highly motivated and genuinely interested in learning about the Macintosh systems and the Virtual PC environment. Both employees exhibit a positive attitude about CBT. Social characteristics: One employee is Caucasian and one employee is African American. Both speak English as their primary language. Both employees are shy and reserved. Design Implications of the Target Audience: Both employees have no physical limitations that need to be considered in the design. Although neither employee has prior knowledge setting up a Virtual PC or transferring files to a Macintosh computer, both employees are highly motivated to learn.

4 Task Analysis: In order for the IT staff to transfer data from the current PC s to their Macintosh laptops, Parallels Desktop 3 for the Mac will be installed. File transfer will take place between the PC desktops and the Macintosh laptops using a firewire cable. The following is an overview of the tasks that will be involved 1. Down load and install Parallels on the Macintosh (Source): a) Start Safari and browse to Parallels Desktop download web page b) Download the Parallels Desktop package c) Install the Parallels Desktop (includes Transporter) 2. Down load and install Parallels on the PC (Host): a) Start Internet Explorer and browse to Parallels Transporter web page b) Download the Transporter package c) Install the Parallels Transporter and Parallels Transporter Agent 3. Attach the PC and the Macintosh together via firewire for file transfer 4. On the PC, start the Agent application 5. On the Macintosh, start the Transporter application 6. Migrate files from the PC to the Macintosh

5 Technical and Resource Limitations: A Windows-based PC located in the company s conference room will be used to deliver the computer-based training. 6 Design & Development Documentation The design specifications included in this document are project scope, project goals, instructional objectives, instructional strategies, application media, application style guide, project timeline, pand roject limitations and constraints. In addition to the above, the following deliverables are also included: High-level and Low-level Flow Charts Storyboard Outline Storyboard Main Screens Style Guide Facilitator s Guide User smanual Project scope: The project will be developed using Flash CS3 and ActionScript 3.0 and will be hosted and delivered on the company s Intranet. The courseware will be presented in sequential modules, each module building upon the last. The courseware will include five modules: overview of what will be taught and the technology being used how to download Parallels onto the Mac and the PC how install Parallels how to install XP and setting up the Virtual Machine how to transfer data and applications from the PC to the Mac. Sample screens will be provided for the introductory screen, an overview screen, a learning objectives screen, and a set of instructional screens for each module. Karen Looney EME 6930 Flash

7 Along with the design document, the client will be provided with a project style guide, a high-level flowchart and a storyboard outline. Client review and acceptance will finalize this agreement via client sign-off. Design goals: The design goal is develop a computer-based tutorial that will teach learners the skills necessary to download, install, and set up a virtual PC on a Macintosh computer and transfer Windows-based applications to the Macintosh using Parallels Desktop 3.0 for the Mac. Prerequisite skills and knowledge: Because the IT employees have no prior knowledge installing a Virtual PC using Parallels Desktop, the design will focus on developing the skill sets necessary to teach these competencies. Basic computing skills will not be covered in this courseware and the modules will be written for an audience with above average technology skills. Instructional objectives and Outcome Competences: After completing this computer-based training, the IT staff will learn how to download Parallels Desktop 3.0, install the software, setup a virtual machine, and transfer data from the Windows computer to the Macintosh computer. Instructional strategies: Because the learners are IT employees, the design will follow a constructivists teaching method that will draw upon the employees current IT knowledge and use that knowledge as an aid in teaching the new concepts. Assessment methods: Given the linear nature of the subject matter and the technical skill sets of the target audience, assessments were deemed unnecessary. Karen Looney EME 6930 Flash

8 Application media: The training modules will be designed and developed using Flash CS3 and ActionScript 3.0. Due to time and resource restrictions, the design will not include audio or video. The application will be hosted on the company s web server and delivered via the company s Intranet. Timeline for development: The development time for this project is as follows: Need Analysis September 17, 2008 Design Documentation October 8, 2008 Development Documentation October 29, 2008 Client Prototype Presentation November 26, 2008 Project Completion December 5, 2008 Project limitations and constraints: One Instructional Technologist will be assigned to this training project. Given the time constraints and the limited staff resources for development, the design will need to strictly adhere to the time frames established for each stage of development. 27 Tutorial Overview This tutorial is designed to teach users how to install and set up a virtual PC on a Macintosh computer and transfer Windows-based applications to the Macintosh using Parallels Desktop for the Mac. The courseware was written October 25 th, 2008 for Parallels Desktop 3.0. The course is approximately 30 minutes in length, omitting the time required to download and install applications. 30 Target Audience The target audience for this project consists of individuals from an Information Technology department. Employees are expected to have degrees in Information Science fields and/or at least three years of hands-on technology experience. Because this audience has advanced skills working with computer technology, basic computing skills is assumed and is not included in this learning module. The modules are written in English with gender neutral language. Assistive technologies have not been incorporated into the design for users with physical challenges. 32 Content & Approach The course teaches learners how to setup, install and transfer files; therefore, the content follows a linear approach stepping students sequentially through the steps involved at each stage. Because users are experienced in computer technology, learners have control to follow the pace of the course, advance at their own pace and revisit previous modules.
