1 Application Procedures for College Scholarships SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION Applicant must complete and submit all forms to the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation by February 1, All Documents must be the official original documents - no copies will be accepted. A completed scholarship application should include the following items: A. Completed application and photo. B. Current official transcript with GPA. C. Verification of test scores (SAT, ACT and/or GRE, LSAT, MCAT, or GMAT) if not on your official transcript, and if not previously submitted. D. Three recommendations from teachers, counselors, clergy members or employers, including at least one academic and at least one non-academic recommendation. (We suggest providing a stamped envelope, preaddressed to the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation, ATTN: Scholarship Administrator, 7800 Northaven Road, Dallas, Texas, , when requesting a recommendation.) Applicants re-applying need only submit one new recommendation. E Student Aid Report (SAR). If you have not yet completed your SAR, please send a SAR or the first page of the 2008 tax return. You must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) in 2010 in order to receive your current SAR. Please submit the FAFSA for processing between January 1 and February 15 in order to submit the SAR to the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation by March 15. INFORMATION CONCERNING THE FASFA APPLICATION You may obtain a FAFSA from your high school guidance counselor, financial aid office, public library, by calling or by visiting You will not automatically receive an orginal SAR from the US Department of Education. However, you can access your SAR online at and print out a copy which you can submit to the Foundation. All applicants must submit a SAR by March 15, ADDITIONAL INFORMATION You may be asked to participate in an interview (not all qualified applicants will be interviewed)* If you are chosen as a scholarship recipient, you will be required to submit proof of registration for full-time enrollment for the Fall 2010 semester, in addition to an official transcript of your most recently completed semester, before first semester funds are distributed. Recipients will be required to submit proof of full-time enrollment for the Spring 2011 semester, as well as an official transcript of grades for the Fall 2010 semester, before second semester funds are distributed. Only original documents will be accepted. Recipients are asked to attend the scholarship reception on May 17, Scholarships may be granted in successive years. However, renewal is not guaranteed. Past scholarship recipients are required to re-apply for the academic year. 2 Minimum Criteria for College Scholarships The ideal applicant for college scholarships awarded by the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation will demonstrate a strong personal commitment to moral principles and/or religious values, excellence in academic achievement, a deep concern for social justice, exemplary personal qualities and interpersonal skills, and financial need. All candidates for scholarships must meet the minimum criteria of the scholarship(s) for which they wish to be considered. Please read each of the descriptions carefully to determine the scholarship(s) for which you qualify. Be sure to mark ONLY the ones for which you qualify on your scholarship application. Where there is no statement to the contrary, students must be residents of the Dallas-Ft.Worth area. The scholarships range from $200 to $5,000. The number of scholarships and their amounts are noted with their descriptions.please check our website, for updates on scholarship amounts. Descriptions of the scholarships offered through the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation and their minimum requirements appear on the following pages.
3 THE ARROW INDUSTRIES SCHOLARSHIP Established to provide Jewish undergraduate students with the opportunity to study in Israel or to pursue Jewish studies in the United States. There is no minimum grade point average or test score required. Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded. Award Amount $2, Undergraduate Students Community/civic activities. School related activities. 12/undergraduate THE BARBARA KAY LEVY CALICK SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established by Hilma B. Levy and Walter J. Levy in loving memory of their daughter, Barbara Kay Levy Calick, for the purpose of providing scholarships to assist with the costs of technical or trade training. Funds may also be used to aid with the costs of higher education at the undergraduate or graduate level. There is no minimum academic grade point average or test score required. Scholarship awards will be based on a combination of financial need, academic merit, proven leadership qualities and community involvement. Jewish and non-jewish candidates are eligible to apply for this scholarship. One scholarship of $ will be awarded. Award Amount $ Undergraduate and Graduate Students Community/civic activities. School related activities. THE FRANK GILFORD SCHOLARSHIP Established in memory of Frank Gilford. One scholarship is available for qualifying students who wish to pursue an education in Jewish studies either locally, elsewhere in the United States or in Israel. Financial need and academic merit will be considered. 4 THE JOE GOLDSTEIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN FASHION AND RETAILING Established by the family of the late Joe Goldstein in his memory. Preference is given to third and fourthyear undergraduate students who are majoring in fashion merchandising and retailing at accredited colleges. Both financial need and academic merit are considered. One $ scholarship will be awarded. Jewish and non-jewish students are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Award Amount $ rd and 4th Year Undergraduate Students Undergraduate Test Scores SAT 1000 or ACT 24 Area of Study Fashion Merchandising and Retailing Community/civic activities. School related activities. THE JOE H.GOLMAN LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP Established by Dr. Hal Jayson in loving memory of his uncle, Joe H. Golman, a dedicated community leader, for the purpose of providing academic scholarships to Jewish high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership potential and community involvement, to assist them in their goals of a obtaining a college degree. Financial need (40%), academic merit (20%), and community involvement (40%) will be considered. One $1, scholarship will be awarded. The grant shall not be limited to tuition, but may cover all education related expenses. Jewish High School Seniors GPA 2.75 Test Scores SAT 950 Leadership potential. Jewish studies, camps, trips, retreats and/ or organizations; or community/civic activities or school-related activities. 12 THE DEBBIE AND RON GREENE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established by Debbie and Ron Greene for the purpose of making a measurable, positive difference in deserving young people s lives by enabling them to fulfill their ambitions of graduation from college and who, in turn, will position themselves to improve others lives. 10% academic achievement, 60% financial need, and 30% community service will be considered. Two scholarships of $ per year for four years will be awarded to two high school seniors. Preference will be given to Richardson High School seniors. Award Amount $4, distributed $ per semester or quarter Jewish High School Seniors Test Scores SAT 1100 or ACT 26 Areas of Study Preference for social well being, such as teaching Jewish studies and/or organizations. Community/civic and school-related activities. Service in leadership roles.
5 THE ANNETTE GOLMAN JAYSON AND FRANCES GOODMAN GOLMAN SCHOLARSHIP Established by Dr. Hal Jayson in loving honor of his mother Annette Golman Jayson, and his aunt, Frances Goodman Golman who are both living lives dedicated to Judaism. Scholarships will be provided for Jewish undergraduates and graduate students to participate in an organized course of academic study in Israel. There is no minimum academic grade point average or test score required. Academic merit (20%), financial need (60%) and community involvement (20%) will be considered. One scholarship of $1, will be awarded. GROSSFELD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Established in memory of Donald J. Grossfeld to fund scholarships for Jewish students at Southern Methodist University [undergraduate (sophomore and older), graduate, or law school students]. Financial need and academic merit will both be considered. Candidates need not be from the Dallas area to be eligible. Jewish Undergraduates sophomore and above, Graduate students, Law School students GPA 2.5 University Southern Methodist University Jewish studies or organizations. Community/civic organizations. School-related organizations. 12 /undergraduate 9/graduate THE BILL JAYSON JEWISH STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP Established by Dr. Hal Jayson in loving memory of his Father, Bill Jayson, who served as an inspiration to him and to many others in the Dallas Jewish community, to provide scholarships for undergraduate or graduate level students who have demonstrated an interest in or are currently enrolled in a formal Jewish studies program. Financial need (60%), academic merit (20%), and community involvement (20%) will be considered. One $1, scholarship will be awarded. The grant shall not be limited to tuition, but may cover all education related expenses. 6 THE JFGD JEWISH COMMUNAL SERVICE STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP Established by the Federation Board of Directors. Scholarships are available for graduate students pursuing a degree in Jewish Communal Service (other than the rabbinate or cantorate). Financial need (35%), academic merit (40%) and Jewish involvement (25%) will be considered. One scholarship will be awarded. Candidates must be enrolled in or applying for full-time graduate degree program or certification program in Jewish Communal Service, or a related graduate program such as social work, public administration, etc. at an accredited college or university. The program must include a supervised internship in a Jewish communal setting. Jewish Graduate students Test Scores GRE v 540 q 640 a 600 or GMAT v 32 q 35 or GMAT v 32 q 35 equivalent Area of Study Jewish Communal Service Jewish studies, camps, trips, retreats and organizations. THE JONAS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established by Veronique and Hylton T. Jonas to enable Jewish students to attend the university or college of their choice. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Scholarship awards are available for undergraduate or graduate students. Financial need (95%), and academic merit (5%) will be considered. There is no minimum Grade Point Average or test score required. One $1, scholarship will be awarded. Jewish Undergraduate and Graduate students Jewish Cultural/religious studies, camps, trips, retreats and organizat ions. - THE SAM AND ANNE KESNER TEXAS A & M SCHOLARSHIP Established by Sam and Anne Kesner for Jewish students at Texas A & M University. Financial need (80%), academic merit (10%) and Jewish involvement (10%) will be considered. One scholarship of $ will be awarded. Students need not be from the Dallas area to be eligible. Award Amount $ Jewish Undergraduate and Graduate students University Texas A&M University (non-dallas applicants OK) Jewish studies, camps, trips, retreats and organizations.
7 THE NINA J. KUTCHUK SCHOLARSHIP Established in honor of family and friends who have provided Nina their love, support and inspiration. This scholarship is for the purpose of assisting a young Jewish female student by removing some of the financial roadblocks in her pathway to pursue her educational dream to attend the university or college of her choice. Financial need (60%), academic merit (30%), and community involvement (10%) will be considered. It is important to the donor that the woman receiving this scholarship should be a person of quality in both her personal and educational goals. One scholarship of $ will be awarded. Award Amount $ Jewish Undergraduate female students Test Scores SAT 1000 or ACT 24 Jewish studies, camps, trips, retreats and organizations. 12 THE BEN AND DOROTHY LEWIS SCHOLARSHIP Established by the Federation Board of Directors in memory of Ben and Dorothy Lewis, two outstanding leaders of the Jewish community. Scholarships are available for Jewish students pursuing a career as a Jewish community professional (rabbinate, Jewish teacher, community worker, etc). Financial need and academic merit will both be considered. One $ scholarship will be awarded. Award Amount $ Jewish Undergraduate and Graduate students Test Scores SAT 1000 or ACT 24 Graduate Test Scores GRE v 540 q 640 a 600 or GMAT v 32 or equivalent Areas of Study Jewish Community Professional Jewish studies, camps, trips, retreats and organizations. THE JULIE G. LOWENBERG SCHOLARSHIP Established in honor of Julie Lowenberg for the purpose of enabling undergraduate and graduate students to attend college. There are no minimum levels for grades and test scores. Jewish and non-jewish candidates are eligible to apply for this scholarship. 60% finanancial need and 40% community involvement will be considered. One scholarship of $1, will be awarded. Undergraduate and Graduate students Cultural/religious studies, camps, retreats, trips and organizations.
8 THE FRANCES OLSAN SCHOLARSHIP Established in memory of Frances Olsan as a general scholarship. Both financial need and academic merit are considered. One $ scholarship will be awarded. Jewish and non-jewish candidates are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Award Amount $ Undergraduate and Graduate students Undergraduate Test Scores SAT 1000 or ACT 24 Graduate Test Scores GRE v 540 q 640 a 600 or GMAT v32 q 35 or equivalent Cultural/religious studies, camps, retreats, trips and organizations. THE ONE AT A TIME SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established by Sharon and Brad Roth to provide tuition assistance to under-privileged students, this scholarship fund was born from the simple hope that education is the answer to many of today s social problems. The naming of One-at-a-Time comes from a belief that each of us must take personal responsibility to change the world, one person at a time. Jewish and non-jewish candidates are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Financial need (70%), academic merit (20%) and community involvement or leadership activities (10%) will be considered. There is no minimum Grade Point Average or test score required. Award Amount $ Undergraduate and Graduate students Cultural/religious studies, camps, retreats, trips and organizations. ARNOLD AND RUTH W. PIAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established by Sally L. Pian and Ira W. Silverman in honor of the 94th birthday of Ruth Pian, to enable deserving young people to attend The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Students must be American citizens. Jewish and non-jewish candidates are eligible. Financial need (33%), academic achievement/ high scholastic merit (34%) and community involvement (33%) will be considered. One scholarship of $5, will be awarded. Award Amount $5, Undergraduate seniors or current medical students University University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
9 THE HEDY AND FRED REISBERG SCHOLARSHIP Established for the purpose of providing scholarships for Jewish students in need to enable them to attend the university, college or Yeshiva of their choice. Scholarship awards are available for undergraduate or graduate students. Financial need (70%), academic merit (20%), and community involvement (10%) will be considered. Two scholarships of $1, each will be awarded. There is no minimum academic Grade Point Average or test score required. Award Amount $1, Jewish Undergraduate and Graduate students Jewish studies, camps, trips, retreats and organizations. Community/civic activities. School-related activities. THE SAFFRAN FAMILY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Established by the Sy Saffran family in memory of Bernard, Elinor and Linnea Saffran to award Jewish high school seniors who have shown exceptional commitment to their community through their documented and regular involvement in Religious or Community organizations. Scholastic merit, academic achievement and financial need will also be evaluated on a ratio of 10% academic merit, 10% financial need, 30% academic achievement and 50% community involvement. Award Amount $ Jewish High School Seniors Test Scores SAT 1000 or ACT 24 Jewish studies, camps, trips, retreats and organizations. Community/civic activities. School-related activities. THE MARTIN SAMUELSOHN SCHOLARSHIP FOR JEWISH STUDENTS ATTENDING SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW Established by Martin Samuelsohn to encourage Jewish students to attend his alma mater, Southern Methodist University School of Law. Academic excellence as well as financial need and community involvement will be considered. Scholarship candidates must be enrolled in or applying for full-time study at Southern Methodist University School of Law and will be chosen as worthy for consideration by the School. Candidates must have maintained a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.1, either while at Law School or in their previous course of studies. The Scholarship Committee will interview the candidates, and then evaluate them based on the interview and the following criteria: Academic Excellence - 75%, Financial Need - 20%, Community Involvement - 5%. 10 THE FANNIE SCHAENEN SCHOLARSHIP Established in memory of long-time donor, Fannie Schaenen, to provide a scholarship for a student enrolled in an institution of higher learning. Both financial need and academic merit are considered. One $ scholarship will be awarded. Jewish and non-jewish candidates are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Scholarships are available for undergraduate or graduate students. Financial need (50%), academic merit (30%), and community involvement (20%) will be considered. Jewish and non-jewish students are eligible to apply for this scholarship. At least one scholarship of $2, will be awarded. To qualify for consideration the applicant must have resided in the area served by the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas or in Smith County for at least a year prior to the application deadline. One scholarship of $2, will be awarded. Candidates must be enrolled for a full year with a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Financial need (60%), academic merit (20%), and community involvement (20%) will be considered. 11 THE EDITH AND HERBERT STEHBERG SCHOLARSHIP The primary source of funds is from the trust established by the Trustees of The Edith and Herbert Stehberg Charitable Trust, and are awarded to undergraduate studies at any private or public (NOT PAROCHIAL OR VOCATIONAL) college or university. Scholastic achievement (60%), financial need (35%) and community involvement (5%) are considered. Jewish and non-jewish students are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Students must be United States citizens. Up to three scholarships of $1, EACH will be awarded. Candidates must enroll beginning with the fall semester and must remain eligible to receive the second distribution for the spring semester. Award Amount $1, Undergraduate students Test Scores SAT 1000 or ACT 24 Areas of involvement 12 THE UBS CORPORATE ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP Established by UBS Financial Services Inc. for the purpose of providing need-based academic scholarships to enable students from the Dallas area to fulfill their dreams of attending college. The criteria for eligibility for this scholarship shall be strictly need based. There is no minimum academic grade point average or test score required. Candidates must enroll for a full year in an undergraduate program with a minimum of 12 credits. One $ scholarship will be awarded. Both Jewish and non-jewish students are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Award Amount $ Undergraduate students 12
12 THE GERARDO AND HELGA WEINSTEIN ENDOWMENT FUND Established by Gerardo and Helga Weinstein to provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students including certified vocational school students. Jewish and non-jewish students are eligible to apply. 40% academic merit, 40% financial need and 20% community involvements will be considered. One scholarship of $1, will be awarded Award Amount $1,000 Undergraduate and Graduate Students Cultural/Religious Studies, camps, retreats, trips and organizations. Community/civic activities.
