7 Introductory Academic Program (IAP) The Introductory Academic Program is intended to provide AAS students with a range of skills necessary to make a smooth transition to and enhance performance in their academic programs. The IAP is compulsory for AAS students, and students must arrive prior to its commencement. The IAP is five weeks in duration and takes place prior to the commencement of your academic program. The first week of the IAP includes some orientation activities to help you settle in to the University and to Adelaide. Students with families studying/children/ The Australia Awards Scholarship does not provide any financial or other support for your dependants. If you are planning to bring your family to Australia, you are strongly advised to arrive on your own first for at least the first six months. Once you have settled into your new living and learning environment and have found long-term accommodation, you will be in a better position for your family to join you in Australia. If you intend to bring your children to Australia, please be aware that there are costs associated with childcare and schooling in Australia. Childcare Quality childcare services are available at the University s North Terrace and Waite campuses, and at many childcare centres throughout Adelaide. Fees vary from approximately AUD$65 90 per day to approximately AUD$350-$445 per week. Students receiving Australian government scholarships (such as AAS) may be eligible for a government subsidy of part of these fees (the Child Care Benefit). Childcare services generally cater for children between the ages of three months and five years of age. Kindergartens or preschools located throughout Adelaide and suburbs offer educational programs for children who are four years old. Fees for kindergarten may be from AUD$80 per term (10 weeks). For children who are attending school, many public primary schools offer afterschool and vacation care for a fee (currently around AUD$8 9 per hour for after school care and approximately AUD$30 per day for vacation care). Education for children of international students School attendance is compulsory for all children in Australia aged between six and sixteen years, with most children commencing school at five years of age. School attendance is from Monday to Friday and generally from 9.00am 3.30pm. The school academic year commences in late January and the year is divided into four terms. Schools available to the dependants of international students include State government-operated public schools as well as independent schools. As a holder of an Australian Government scholarship (an AAS award) your dependant children can attend public schools and pay the same low fees as local students. To be eligible for this, you will need to obtain a document called the Letter of Authority from the Department of Education and Child Development (DECD). A request for this letter must be made through the International Student Centre to verify your student and scholarship status to DECD. The ISC will facilitate the Letter of Authority for you after your arrival in Australia. The School Materials and Services Fee is payable each year. This is a fee paid by all parents local and international. It helps the school to buy exercise books, pens and other personal resources for students. This annual fee is set by the school and ranges from A$110 up to A$920 per child per year depending on the school and level of services offered. Intensive Primary English Course If your primary school aged child needs English language instruction, you can enrol them in the Intensive Primary English Course (IPEC), which is an intensive English course designed to provide young children with the skills required for entering mainstream primary education classes. Students usually attend the IPEC Program for one year. They can then continue at the school in the mainstream program or go to their local school if you wish. Similar intensive English language support is also available at secondary school for older dependant children. Contact the Department of Education, Training and Employment for details of primary and secondary schools offering intensive English language support in South Australia. 8 Accommodation Adelaide has a wide range of accommodation options including University-managed accommodation, residential colleges, student hostels, private rentals and share-housing. University-managed accommodation and residential colleges offer many advantages, as they are close to campus and offer furnished rooms with the cost of electricity, gas and water all included in the fee. Students accompanied by family members will find private rental accommodation in houses or apartments is the most suitable option. It is easiest for students to arrive in Adelaide alone initially in order to arrange suitable permanent family accommodation. All international students are guaranteed one week of single room temporary accommodation upon arrival (a fee applies approximately A$200 for a single student for one week at the time of printing). This service is provided by the Accommodation Service and must be arranged before arrival. Health insurance and services default.aspx The Australian Government requires all international students and their families to have health insurance in Australia through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme. The OSHC helps pay for medical care which you may need when you are studying in Australia. As an AAS student, your OSHC (Single) cover will be paid by your scholarship. The University s preferred provider of OSHC is Allianz Global Assistance. When you accept your Placement Offer, the University will arrange an OSHC (Single) membership for you with Allianz. You will receive your OSHC membership card on arrival. If you have dependants on your Student Visa you will be required to purchase OSHC (Family) membership by paying the difference between a Single and Family cover. At the time of printing the fee for OSHC Essentials cover is AUD$594 per year for a single student, AUD$1,643 for a family of two and AUD$2,396 for a multi-family policy. This is subject to change. OSHC covers up to 100% of the scheduled fee for most medical services and 100% of the scheduled fees in hospitals. Scheduled fees are those recommended by the Australian Government, but doctors and private hospitals often charge more than this recommended scheduled fee, creating a gap amount that must be paid by the patient. Whenever possible, check with the doctor or hospital providing the treatment if a gap payment is required, and how much extra you will need to pay over and above the refund you will receive from the medical insurer. Always check your benefit entitlement with the insurer before going to a private hospital. OSHC services Services and charges not currently covered by OSHC include: > > Treatment for medical conditions, or disabilities, in existence before you came to Australia during the first 12 months of membership > > Additional charges for single room accommodation in hospitals > > Assisted reproductive services such as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) > > Dental, physiotherapy, optical wear > > Pregnancy related services if your visa is for three months or less > > The difference between the scheduled fee for any service and the actual charge levied by the doctor or the hospital (remember, many doctors and private hospitals charge above the scheduled fee). If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you may like to investigate additional insurance options in your home country for the first 12 months of your stay in Australia. Further information can be found on the following websites: default.aspx visas/healthoshc/ Language and learning services The Writing Centre and the Maths Learning Centre offer individual consultations to assist with all aspects of coursework involving writing and mathematics. All services, seminars and courses are free for students enrolled at the University of Adelaide. Writing Centre The Writing Centre presents seminars to advance academic skills, focussing on reading and research skills, giving presentations at tutorials and seminars, essay writing and report writing. A conversational language support program and weekly tutorials are provided for students who have English as an additional language, and Learning Guides are also available to help all students to develop their skills. Maths Learning Centre The Maths Learning Centre (MLC) exists to help all students to develop the skills they need to learn and use the maths involved in their courses, including statistics. The MLC provides bridging courses, seminars, workshops and online resources, as well as a drop-in service where students can come without an appointment for one-on-one assistance. 6 Australia Awards Scholarships 2016

Programs are conducted over two years of full-time study and students are trained in research methodology and techniques, engaging in the critical evaluation of literature and results in their area of research. International students who enter the undertake the mixed research and coursework stream of the program. One-third of the degree will include coursework dealing with research methodology, while the remaining two-thirds of the program will comprise research and the production of a research thesis.
