There are a number of options you may change to get the backup strategy best for you; this plan saves all of your user libraries, configuration data, security data, documents, etc, every Friday. Monday thru Thursday, it will save changes only. What this plan does not do This plan does not do a full system backup. A full system backup includes the operating system and all IBM libraries, as well all user libraries. This should be done whenever you load PTF s, or install a new operating system release. To save your entire system, see the section at the end of this document. Also note that saving changed objects, which is what this plan does Monday thru Thursday, will not save a newly created library which has never been saved before. If you create a new library, you should back it up manually. Once the library has been saved once, it will be automatically saved by the daily saves. It is also essential to insure that you have the Model Unique LIC tape which should have been shipped with your machine. This tape contains system code that is not saved during a backup, but may be required for restoring your entire system. Make sure you have this tape and that it is stored in a secure location. This plan can be modified to meet your own particular needs. What is important is: You have a backup plan. You use your backup plan. You review your backup operations to make sure they are performed as scheduled and are working correctly.

2 How to set up an automated backup on your AS/400 Page 2 of 9 How to implement this plan: Initialize 7 tapes as follows: INZTAP DEV(TC) NEWVOL(MOND01) CHECK(*NO) INZTAP DEV(TC) NEWVOL(TUES01) CHECK(*NO) INZTAP DEV(TC) NEWVOL(WEDN01) CHECK(*NO) INZTAP DEV(TC) NEWVOL(THUR01) CHECK(*NO) INZTAP DEV(TC) NEWVOL(WEKA01) CHECK(*NO) INZTAP DEV(TC) NEWVOL(WEKB01) CHECK(*NO) INZTAP DEV(TC) NEWVOL(WEKC01) CHECK(*NO) Tapes MOND01 thru THUR01 will be used each week for the daily backups. Tapes WEKA01 thru WEKC01 are rotated, with one being used each week. If your backup exceeds the capacity of a single tape, then you will need to initialize additional tapes, such as WEKA02, WEKB02, etc. (If your device is other than TC, such as DKT01, use that device name in the above commands.) The above initialization commands also assume that the tapes are matched to the capacity of your tape drive. If, for example, your drive is a 525MB drive, this would be a 6525 tape. If you choose to use a lower capacity tape for the mid-week backups, your initialization command would have to specify a lower density. Each days backup will also print a detailed report of what was backed up. This report can be reviewed to insure that the backup was successful. There is also an option on the backup menu shown which will show you the current backup status and history.

BACKUP Backup Tasks To select one of the following, type its number below and press Enter: 1. Run backup 2. Display backup status 10. Set up backup 20. Initialize a tape 21. Initialize a tape set Type a menu option below F1=Help F3=Exit F9=Command line F12=Cancel From the above menu, take option 10 to display the menu below. SETUPBCKUP Set Up Backup To select one of the following, type its number below and press Enter: 1. Change daily backup options 2. Change weekly backup options 3. Change monthly backup options 10. Change library backup list 11. Change folder backup list 20. Change backup schedule Type a menu option below F1=Help F3=Exit F9=Command line F12=Cancel On this menu, you will use options 1,2, and 20. Start with option 1 to define what the daily backup will be. The following screen will be shown.

(If your tape drive is other than TC, use the correct name for the backup device. Press Page Down to display the next screen.

Complete this screen as shown. (If you do not use Office Vision, you may enter N for the Office Vision prompts. Press Enter. When you return to the Setup Backup Menu, take option 2 to define what your weekly backup will do. This will display the next screen shown.

Now take option 20 from the Set Up Backup Menu to display the screen below: Change Backup Schedule Type choices below, then press Enter. Press F4 for list of backups. Run backup using this schedule Y=Yes, N=No Backup Backup Time Sunday Monday *DAILY 18:00:00 Tuesday *DAILY 18:00:00 Wednesday *DAILY 18:00:00 Thursday *DAILY 18:00:00 Friday *WEEKLY 18:00:00 Saturday Occurrence of day in month to run monthly backup _ 1-4, *LAST Hours before backup to send load tape message , *NOMSG Bottom F1=Help F3=Exit F5=Refresh F12=Cancel Complete the above screen, entering the times you want the backup to run each day. Also enter how long before the backup you want a prompt message sent to the system operator (QSYSOPR message queue). Be sure to set the Run backup... parameter to Y to enable the automatic backup process.

Option 2 on the Backup Menu will display the following screen, which should be reviewed to insure that you are actually backing up what you think you are saving. If you select the option on backup setup to print detailed report, you will get a printout of what was saved. This should be done whenever you load PTF s, or install a new operating system release.
