EFKF Volunteers and Anglia Colleagues have been working on the Games Box for a couple of weeks now, testing the various games at the Anglia Summer Schools. The result is a compact box with six games, ranging from Running Dictaction to Water Race. All the games combine sports and English. The questions are all about the 6 projects that English For Kids Foundation has been running or preparing in 2013: Brazil, India, Ghana, South-Africa, Taiwan and Ukraine. You can order the Games Box on for 50 + Postage.

2 General updates First Kids World Games in Halderberge on Last year we could not accommodate all schools in Utrecht, so this year we decided to talk to local representatives and volunteers to see if it were possible to organise the World Kids Games in different places. In Halderberge our connections at the local Lions Club were positive about this idea. They decided to support the initiative and started recruiting local schools. Yesterday morning, 11 September, nearly 50 participants had been registered, enough to run the Games on Friday 27 September from 1 to 3 pm. Location is the impressive Jezuitenplein, a new square in Oudenbosch, opposite the famous Basilica. Lions Club Halderberge will support the event, the games will be led by Johan Cruijff College and Markland College students. You are welcome to visit the Games. 3 EFKF Ambassador Hugo Tempelman visited NL Professor Dr Hugo Tempelman visited the Netherlands last week and we were fortunate to have a meeting with him to discuss our South-Africa project, one of the longest running projects of the EFKF. Dr Tempelman stressed the importance of the project. English is very important for young people, their chances for a better future definitely increase. In addition, working together with Dutch peers is really very much appreciated. So please keep up the good work. Perhaps we should look at ways of expanding the activities of EFKF. EFKF Board support more investment EFKF Board Members met last week to discuss new investments in our new Brazil project and payment of EFKF Volunteers. Our0 aim to support children who want to learn English but do not have the opportunities will not change, but we all agree that local circumstances should seriously be considered when deciding on budgets and contracts. The Board unanimously agreed to support the Brazil project, which exceeded the normal budget limits, but both Dr Wiese and our Ambassador Professor Adriaansens convinced us of the importance of the project and the need for a higher budget. The Board also agreed to follow legal guidelines in the payment of volunteers. Volunteers leave and join EFKF Team July and August have been eventful months for the EFKF Volunteer Team. Due to family circumstances our Administrator Annelies Verhappen had to cancel all her activities. We want to thank her for all her good work and we wish her all the best. Events Organiser Wilma Pranger left after finding a new full-time job. Good luck and thank you. A new volunteer arrived via VIP, but mysteriously left after 1 week. Earlier this week we had 3 new volunteers interested in joining our Volunteer Team, interviews will be held in the next few weeks. According to VIP the new trend is the short-term volunteer. Hopefully we will be able to find volunteers for a longer period, with enthusiasm and stamina.

4 UC Committee scheduled to meet 13 November In May 2013 University College Roosevelt student Petty Vasilev organised a meeting to discuss volunteer work for EFKF by UC students. To make it stronger and more attractive, Petty suggested starting a Committee that would have 2 representatives of each University College in the Netherlands. The group of 12 representatives should meet 3 times a year to exchange ideas on how to support EFKF locally: visit schools, organise events, do research, develop materials, support PR, find new sponsors and perhaps even visit projects. Volunteer and Roosevelt Academy Alumna Somaye Dehban heard about Petty s initiative and decided to join the preparations for the first meeting on Wednesday 13 November at the next Anglia Members Meeting in or near Utrecht. If you are interested in joining the UC Committee, please us on [email protected] Games at 15 schools, not on UCU Campus Following the success of the Games Boxes, the activities on the European Day of Languages will be organised at 15 schools throughout the Netherlands and Poland, but not at the UCU Campus. 5 Project updates India Little Stars School Katarina Kilibarda is planning to visit Varanasi again in November, her third volunteer job at the Little Stars School. Our contact Gerda Kappert will also travel back to India and visit LSS in October. Looking forward to their reports. Ghana Pabo Student Marloes Waverijn is planning to visit our Ghana project in March In the next few months she wants to work out her plans, find a sponsor school and prepare teaching materials. Inspired by the reports of previous Ghana volunteers, she is interested in using Cool materials. To be continued. Brazil Roosevelt Academy Alumna Petty Vasilev visited our new Brazil project in Sao Paulo in August. She was very impressed by the eagerness of the students to learn better English. Together with Dr Wiese she wants to guide the project from the Netherlands, visiting Christelijk Lyceum Delft to tell the pupils about her experiences in Sao Paulo. The project will start in a few weeks time. South-Africa South Africa contact Mariette Slabbert sent us an yesterday to let us know that they are ready for a re-start. Board Member Jos Blaauwhof visited the project in July and reported positively. Jan Tinbergen College coordinator Frans Dingenouts has started instructing his new pupils. Ineke Diepstraten has let us know her pupils are eager to start. Looking forward to their reports. Taiwan, Morocco & Ukraine No news from Taiwan, Morocco and Ukraine, but we do hope we can resume contacts later this year. 6 Travelling Teachers Orders keep coming in for the Young Learners Booklet. More and more teachers are interested in sharing their stories with EFKF volunteers.
