2 Q: Rose you are welcome to our programme, I can see money in your hand, what do you want to do with this money? A 1: As School girl, am really very happy from GESS project to give me this money as cash transfer, am now going to the market so that I should buy things which are important for my education. Q: Could you please describe for me the things which you want to buy in the market? A 2: I want to use this cash transfer to buy School uniform as you can see me now wearing uniforms which are very old, I also want to buy some exercise for mathematics, English, chemistry, pens, rubbers and ruler, it is my first time to received money like this and it has really help me out from the situation. Q: You said that you want to use cash transfer to buy things related to education, why it is important for you to spend this money on School needs as you have stated? A 3: My father is not working with, so it takes long time to busy for me things like pen, exercise and School uniform and that is why I want to use this money to buy things which I have mentioned above and serve some money as my examination fees. Q: you said your father is not working and that is why you have decided to use this money on School materials, how does this purchase help you at School? A 4: The money has come in the right time for me, every year especially in August, I use to face shortage of the exercise in all these years, because we do take a lot of notes on the blackboard which has brought shortage of the exercise to me and to rest of my colleagues, but now this money has help me to buy some extra exercise for me writing in the class in this year. This will help me to stay on at School if the cash transfer can continue for the remaining three year. Q: What are the procedures to get cash transfer? A 5: Getting the money it has a lot of processes at School, your name needs to appear in the list which was taken to the GESS office, We were told to bring a stamp letter from the chief as a mean of verification to me as a girl who is receiving money and that was done by the School administration.

3 Q: You have stated out the procedures of getting money, but what were the challenges? A 6: When I received this money, my parents were thinking that maybe they are the right people to go and received the money, and it was a bit challenge to me to go about it with my family. My family told me to use this money to buy some goats so that I should sale them out during registration next year. Q: You said that your family were telling you to use the money to buy goats, how did you convince them? A 7: I told my parents that am going to use this money to buy some School materials which are important for my learning at School, and GESS project says they will be giving cash transfer to the girls next year which will also minimize you as my parents not to pay too much money at School. Recap of Interview 1 That was Rose the 18 year old girl at Tonj Secondary School, she said that she want to use her money to buy uniforms, exercise for English, chemistry and other School learning materials, she convince her parents that this money will let her stay on at School and will reduce School expense s from the parents. Cue 2 (Studio recording) Schools have set up procedures for the girls to get their cash transfer at Schools, as a listener would you like to know the ways how the girls get their cash transfer at Schools? Shortly we shall hear from head teacher of Tonj Secondary School, the reason of interviewing him is to find out how did they set up the system of giving cash transfer to the girls at School. I m now standing at Tonj Secondary School compound, the School was built in 1964 during British time, it is a mix School which a accommodate more than 313 both boys and girls, in front of me I can see six big classes and three offices, I have come to the office of acting head teacher Mr John Jok, it is nice office which has four supper chairs and 12 plastic chairs. Interview 2

4 Q: John Jok you are welcome to our programme, what does cash transfer mean to you as head teacher for Tonj Secondary School? A 1: Cash transfer is the money being paid to the girl physically at School, after we submit children name and get approved by the GESS project, the cash are being used for educational purpose by the girl who have received the money. Q: As the acting head teacher for Tonj Secondary School, what system do you use for the girls to get cash transfer? A 2: Money is being given to the girls whose their names are in the registration list and the daily role call from class to class, and from p6 and senior 4 are the only pupils eligible for the cash transfer. Q: You said that the money are given to the girl who have registered her name, could you please describe specifically the way you give them money? A 3: There are several documents to be sign by the girl to get money, validation list which is being signed by payam education supervisor, and County education Director and letter from the chief as a mean of verification that the girl has really received money. Q: Where do the girls received their cash transfer? A 4: Girls they don t have account at bank, the money are being wired to bank especially to the School account which has three people as signatories to the bank account, and they are the members of the School management committee, so girls they do received money at School. Q: Tell me why it is important for the girls to get cash transfer at School? A 5: It is important because this cash transfer will encourage communities to send their children to School in order for their daughters to get cash transfer when they get enrolled into School for the next year. Q: You said that the money will help girls to stay on at School; did you face any challenges when cash transfer arrived at School? A 7: We are facing a lot of challenges at School when we give cash transfer to the girls by calling them name by name using the approved list; boys are saying why they are not hearing their name in the list which has been read out. They said that why they are include and they are in

5 the same School with girls, but we told them that the purpose of cash transfer is to encourage communities to send their children to School, because communities they do ignore girl education. Link: (studio recording) That was John Jok the acting head teacher of Tonj Secondary School, he said that the cash transfer are the money paid physically to the girls whose their name are in the registration list as well as approved list from GESS office, and this money will help girls to stay on at School. I have come home to meet with Deng and his father Boldit; at home I can see cows and goats near to the farm, what you can hear behind me are the cows and goat. Interview 3 Q: Deng you are welcome with your father into our programme, how do you plan to use the cash transfer which given to your sister at School? A 1: I m really very happy from GESS project about the money which given to my sister, I told her to use money to buy some learning materials, and save some money as examination fees for three teams a year. Because I was the one who support her all these years but this year am not working. Q: Boldit as you have heard from your son, how do you feel about this money and education of your daughter? A 2: It is my first time to see School giving money to girls instead for us as parents to pay, as my son have just stated, I was also having my part in my daughter education, I use to sale out goats for examination fees,

6 but now I wanted her to budget this 125 SSP for her education. And am sure this money will encourage her to stay on at School. Q: you said that you need your daughter to spend money on her education, why it is important? It is important because this money will give her experience on how to budget her own things, because she is the one responsible to use this money to buy things that make her to learn at School. Q: Your daughter was telling me that you were suggesting to buy goats, how did you get convince? A 4: I was not having enough information about cash transfer, I thought the money are to be use by the family, but my daughter told me that she will use money for her education which is very good for me as parent, and I understand from her that she may get another cash transfer if I send her back to School next year.
