Attendance for taught modules is usually one afternoon and evening per week (part time) or two afternoons and evenings per week (full time), although some modules may be delivered in an alternative fashion, for example in concentrated 2-day teaching blocks. In addition, students will attend dissertation workshops and be allocated supervision time for the award of MSc. Programme Structure Term 1 Terms 2 & 3 Full-time students & Year 1 part-time students (PgCert) APH7000 Assessing Health, Wellbeing & Inequity (20 credits) SHS7000 Applied Research Methods & Design (20 credits) APH7001 Health Risk Perception & Communication (10 credits) APH7003 Public Health Policy Development (10 credits) Full-time students & Year 2 part-time students (PgDip) APH7010 Frameworks for Public Health Intervention (30 credits) APH7008 Health Protection (20 credits) APH7011 Reflective Public Health Practice (10 credits) MSc module APH7009 Dissertation (60 credits) SHS7000 Applied Research Methods & Design is currently delivered as a blended learning module over four contact days, a Friday and Saturday in the autumn term and a Friday and Saturday in the spring term, supported by e-learning materials and activities. 8 6. MODULE OVERVIEW The course is designed as a Masters programme but it has exit points at both postgraduate certificate & diploma level. Reflective practice is integrated into the programme: students are encouraged to reflect upon their learning as they progress, culminating in a reflective practice module demonstrating the integration and development of their learning and practice through the course of their studies. The dissertation also incorporates a reflective practice element. For the Postgraduate Certificate, students must complete the following modules: Assessing Health, Wellbeing & Inequity (20 credits): Assess, evaluate and communicate information about the health and wellbeing of populations & communities Health Risk Perception & Communication (10 credits): Appraise the sociocultural, emotional and psychological factors that influence responses to threats to population health and wellbeing Public Health Policy Development (10 credits): Evaluate the political, social and economic framework within which policies influencing health & wellbeing are developed Applied Research Methods and Design (20 credits): Develop the qualitative and quantitative research skills necessary to undertake research and evaluate interventions and day-to-day practice. For the Postgraduate Diploma, students undertake the above modules, plus the following core modules: Frameworks for Public Health Intervention (30 credits): This module explores the models, principles and approaches to intervention for the protection and improvement of health and wellbeing. Students will evaluate the principles of community development, health promotion, sustainable development and behaviour change, and consider their application in practice to a range of scenarios. Students then have the opportunity to integrate learning from across the programme through the development of a public health intervention. Students will work in teams to assess the evidence on health & wellbeing needs in a defined community and prioritise issues for intervention, and then develop a coherent multidisciplinary intervention on an identified priority issue, including a clear strategy for evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention. Health Protection (20 credits): This module is intended to enable students to assess, prevent and manage risks to health arising from the general environment, communicable disease and environmental health hazards. Reflective Public Health Practice (10 credits): This module is intended to allow students to demonstrate the integration and development of their learning and its application to professional practice through the course of their studies, drawing together key points for practice development across the 110 credits studied at level 7. To obtain the MSc, students must also complete a Dissertation (60 credits): Design, plan and undertake a piece of independent applied research, and present the findings. Dissertation Students wishing to obtain the award of a Masters degree will be required to submit a dissertation of not more than 15,000 words. The dissertation module as a whole also incorporates two other elements of assessment: a research proposal, and a reflective practice element. All elements of the assessment must be passed. The aim of the dissertation is to enable students to demonstrate the ability to design, plan, and undertake research in a relevant study area, and present the findings. Each student will be allocated appropriate academic support time for supervision. This will be negotiated between the individual student and supervisor. Where appropriate other members of staff may provide specialist support for specific parts of the student s research. The 6
9 supervisor will monitor student progress with their dissertation and regular feedback will be given to the Programme Director at programme team meetings. Dissertations cannot be submitted before successful completion of taught elements of the programme. Students will normally be expected to submit their dissertation by the end of April of the year following completion of the taught elements. Deviation from these timescales for any reason not covered in the University s Mitigating Circumstances guidelines and procedure, shall be at the discretion of the Programme Director following application in writing by the student. Any extension of time must continue to be in accordance with the candidature requirements of the University. Further details concerning protocols and assessment procedures are contained within the Dissertation Module Descriptor and the Dissertation Handbook, which is available on Blackboard throughout the programme. Management of Assessment At the beginning of each module students will be given details of the assessment programme. This will include the precise nature and format of the assessment, the criteria for assessment and details of dates for submission of work. The Programme Director in consultation with Module Leaders will ensure that the assessments are sequenced in a satisfactory manner. The submission, marking and feedback to students will be in accordance with stated Cardiff Met policy and the School s Assessment Strategy. The assessment regulations are available in the Cardiff Met Academic Handbook at Programme Specific Regulations Arrangements for retrieving failure in assessment At the discretion of the Examining Board, normally candidates who have been unsuccessful in any assessments/modules will be offered TWO further attempts to redeem their failure in each assessment. At the discretion of the Examining Board, part-time students may be permitted to trail the equivalent of 10 credits of assessment between years 1 & 2 of the programme. Compensation for failure in assessment across a candidate s profile Students are normally required to pass all elements of assessment in order to complete each module successfully. This is in order to demonstrate achievement of all learning outcomes and relevant professional standards and framework criteria. Consequently, the procedure described in the Academic Handbook regarding compensation for failures in assessment across a candidate s profile is not applicable to this programme, except in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of an Examining Board. Without prejudice to the discretion of the Examining Board in any individual case, such a situation would normally be supported by a successful application for Mitigating Circumstances. Compensation for failure in assessment within modules In order to successfully complete a module, students must obtain an overall mean of at least 40% in that module. It is therefore possible for a student to pass a module having failed one or more assessment elements if the overall mean is at least 40%. The standard provisions in the Cardiff Met Academic Handbook (Volume Assessment Regulations Section 13) apply, with the following clarifying details: 7
10 By definition, compensation within a module cannot occur where there is only one assessment for that module. When compensation occurs, the mean for the module will remain as the mean obtained prior to compensation. Modules that have been compensated will be highlighted in progress reports and feedback provided to students. Compensation is not automatic and normally tends to occur when evidence suggests that a failure is uncharacteristic of a student s assessment performance. As such, compensation will normally be limited to one 20-credit module or two 10-credit modules in the taught element of the programme. Compensation is not permitted for the Dissertation module. 8

Our great strength is our multidisciplinary, collaborative approach and we produce world-class applied research that informs practice in Wales and beyond. For example, our work on exercise, diabetes, and healthy ageing includes collaborations between biomedical science, psychology and physiologists to better understand the complex relationships between lifestyle the ageing process and illness associated with ageing; extending our knowledge in this critically important area and influencing healthy ageing initiatives. Recent research grants awarded in this area include Welsh Government funded work on growing a healthy older population in Wales looking at the influence of gardening and allotment keeping on healthy aging and a large European funded study, Frailomics, examining biomarkers of frailty, an important indicator of health in the older population. Research across the School is extensive and varied. For more information on our research please visit and follow the link to research. 11

We work in partnership with the Cardiff and Vale University Hospital Board to deliver key collaborative projects including running NHS Podiatry Clinics in our own Wales Centre for Podiatric Studies, improving patient care and clinical education for our students. The internationally recognized Food Industry Centre based in the School has been awarded 3.9 million from the Welsh Government to engage with Welsh food manufacturers to ensure they are competitive players in the food sector. To date this has led to the development of over 100 jobs in the industry and benefitted our students with opportunities for work placements, industry projects and innovative employment in the food industry. We work closely with industry on waste, pollution and occupational health and safety, and host one of the specialist chemical centres of Public Health England s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards and the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Public Health Management of Chemical Incidents. Staff from the School contribute to the work of a new Cardiff Met International Training Centre announced by the World Health Organisation in May 2011 in Thailand and officially launched here in April Our role in providing lifelong learning opportunities through Continuing Personal and Professional Development is important and we have excellent relationships with employers providing a host of CPD opportunities across the School s disciplines.
