Course description This course deals with the financing and reimbursement functions associated with health insurance system. Primary attention is directed towards the economic purpose, structure, operation, and performance of the national health insurance industry. The goals are to make you more aware about how the health insurance industry fits into the overall health care system; provide you with various concepts and principles relating to the administration of health insurance and the functioning of the health insurance industry. In that context, managed care techniques, benefit package designs including consumer directed health plans, and cost sharing mechanisms are discussed. Applied Statistics in Public Health Survey This course provides students with a basic understanding of how to use proper statistical procedures in analyzing and presenting their survey research results. Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to develop a questionnaire for collecting health related information from the public, apply statistical packages and use appropriate statistical methods for data analysis, interpret the results of their analyses, and write a scientific research report. As a branch of sociology, medical sociology is a diverse discipline bordering with disciplines like public health, social work, demography, and gerontology. While the field is so large, no single course could cover its entire breadth. This course, medical sociology would introduce to students the basic sociological issues concerning health and illness. It is hoped that by the end of this semester, students will be able to understand health, illness, and its related issues from a sociological perspective. As the course unfolds, we should be reading articles and reports concerning how health is shaped and determined by societal factors (e.g. the norms and values a society shares and the social group membership to which we belong). We will learn how the stratification of societies would influence the distribution of morbidity and mortality, how illness is socially constructed, and the training and socialization of health professionals. We will discuss what the determinants of health are and why health disparities persist from time to time and from society to society. Plus, as population is aging globally, we will talk about the impacts and implications of population aging on our societies and issues relating to the end of life care and the discussions in soaring health expenditure and futile care. This course will have students examine and discuss the main ideas generated by the application of microeconomics to issues of health and the healthcare sector. Life Education and Spiritual Health Promotion This course is an exploration of current theory and knowledge about the intersection of human spirituality and health. It is intended for health educators and other health professionals, and will examine the effective methods by which these people can assess and address issues of spirituality of their clients/ patients in their professional practice. The goal of this course is to help students understand the best policy options available to them in the coming years, including: 1. Assessing the burden of disease 2. Allocating public and (private) health expenditures 3. Ensuring equity and access to healthcare 4. Improving health behaviors of individuals and providers 5. Implementing healthcare policies ASIA 5
6 Course Title Course description Practical Issues in Health Care Organization This course is designed to prepare students for administrative roles up to toplevel executive positions in complex health services organizations. The curriculum emphasizes strategic and operational management, and examines broad spectrum of managerial problems and functions likely to be encountered by health services organizations. This course provides an intensive introduction to epidemiology in concepts, methodology, and study designs. The sessions will feature seminar presentations and discussions on current topics from relative papers and case studies. International Comparative Study of Health Administration and Longterm Care This course provides an opportunity for students to review and critique current literature in health administration and long-term care system research in relation to the critical system changes that are occurring in the health sector worldwide. A series of observations and papers will be used to identify sources of revenue for the health settings (including hospitals, worksites, communities, and schools). By the end of the course, students should have acquired the requisite analytical skills for evaluating and making recommendations on how countries can reform their health settings. Health Education and Health Promotion The course is designed to enhance students skills in assessing educational needs, developing an educational program for intervention, and evaluating the effect of the program for a specific population.
