5 Dear supporters of aeronautics, flying and aviation technology, Dear colleagues, Dear friends! On 4 September 2013, the ceremony meeting took place in which we commemorated the 40th anniversary of university aviation education in Kosice and the establishment a major university education institution of Kosice the University of Military Aviation of the Slovak National Uprising (SNU) in Kosice which was, for over 30 years, preparing aeronautical engineers, pilots and technical personnel not only for Czechoslovakia and surrounding European countries, but also for the partners in America, Africa and Asia. Its main role at the beginning, as a center of military aviation training, was to prepare primarily the military aircrew. Significant results were also achieved in the field of science and research. During its existence, it consolidated and spread the reputation of the world famous Kosice aviation school which was attended by a total of more than 4300 graduates. Excellent military pilots who are still flying today in civil aviation, graduated there. It is undisputed that regarding to the existence of the University of Military Aviation of SNU and its successors, Kosice has been talked about as the aviation city with strong aviation tradition. It was created by a whole generation of aviation enthusiasts - pilots, specialists, teachers and students who acted and are still acting in Kosice. Their enthusiasm and work is certainly worth admiring and it corresponds to the approach of the personality of Milan Rastislav Stefanik, after whom the Air Force Academy of GMRS was named. His credo believe, love and work is a motto, in spirit of whom we live and create. And let us add - the only way we can truly live and develop the aviation tradition, nurture new followers and maintain the continuity of traditions and aviation in Kosice. The beginning of a new stage in fulfilling the legacy of our ancestors can be considered the transformation of the military aviation institution to the civilian one. The relay of university education of aviation experts was taken over in 2005 by the Faculty of Aeronautics of the Technical University in Kosice, which was based on the Air Force Academy of General Milan Rastislav Stefanik in Kosice and its educational and scientific research activities focused primarily on civil aviation and technology. Today, after eight years of its existence, it can be stated that the faculty has been successfully established within the faculties of the Technical University in Kosice, and it has been expanding its options - aviation study programs. The Faculty of Aeronautics, from its beginning, has focused on complex aviation issues, has provided university education and has conducted the scientific research and development in traditional areas of aviation: the management and security of aviation, aerospace engineering, avionics and construction, maintenance and operation of aeronautical products as a part of three scientific fields with accredited study programs at all three university degrees. Since the establishment of the Faculty of Aeronautics TUKE until 2013, over 1500 graduates completed the study programs in Engineer and Doctoral study degrees. Let me express my sincere thanks to all who have contributed to maintaining of our aviation educational institution and also ask all academic staff and all its supporters to help keep our pace of development and jointly develop a work the elements of which were laid by our predecessors and thus create favorable conditions for those who will continue in progress after us. Let s help together encourage ourselves in developing of so-called AVIATION SCHOOL IN KOSICE. Great health, lots of happiness, career and personal success and the blue sky for everyone! prof. Ing. František Adamčík, CSc. Dean of FA TUKE
6 THE HISTORY The history of the Air Force Academy of Gen. M.R. Stefanik, Kosice, is a follower of the traditions of military aviation training dating as back as to 1919, to the formation of the Aviation School in Prague. And, already in the same year the Follow-up piloting school was formed. In the year of 1920, military aviation training was concentrated in Cheb, headed by the Directorate of Aviation Schools. Later it was renamed to Czecho-Slovak Central Schools for Air-navigation and then again as Aviation Technical College. Starting with April 1924, arrangements for the formation of the School of Specialized Aviation cadets along with School of Aviation for Reserve Officers were made. In 1925, the Aviation Technical School moved to Prostejov and was renamed as Military Technical College of Aviation. Starting with 1937, the name Technical College of Aviation came into use. In May 1939, the occupation of the Czech part of the republic leads to the liquidation of the Technical College of Aviation. Following the declaration of independence of the Slovak state, the former training squadron of the 3rd Regiment of Gen.-pilot- M. R. Stefanik, stationed at the airfields in Piestany, Vajnory and Nitra created a sound basis for military aviation training to build upon. In October 1940, the squadron merged into the newly formed Aviation School of the Slovak Air Force stationed at the Trencianske Biskupice airfield. In the post-war period, already in June 1945, the Technical College of Aviation, Prostěeov resumed its activities. In the town of Liberec the preparatory school of Aviation was established to ensure general purpose military training and the fundamentals of theory for pilot or communication training of NCOs remaining with the service. Starting with 15 September 1945 the Military Academy of Aviation for Air Force reserve-officers came into being in Hradec Kralove. In the same year the No l Military Aviation School of Communication was founded in Pardubice, and the No 2 Aviation School of communication in Spisská Nova Ves was formed again. Practical training in navigation, air gunnery, and bombing for board navigators, radio-com officers, gunners and weaponsofficers was run by the Aviation School of Shooting, later reorganized as the Aviation Technical College of Shooting. To date of l October, 1949 the Aviation Technical College was formed in Liptovsky Svaty Mikulas, comprising the Military Technical College of Aviation technicians, Military Educational Centre of Aviation Specialists in reserve. Starting with the year of 1951, the School of Aviation Ground Specialists was established in Zamberk. Since 1953, university-level education for Air Force staff has been made available by the School of Aviation and Communication and at the School of Logistics, both part of the Military Academy, Brno. In the autumn of 1955, education in military aviation was represented by the Military Technical College of Aviation, Prostejov, Technical College of Aviation Liptovsky Mikulas and School of Aviation Ground Specialists, Zamberk. On 1 September 1959 the Technical College of Aviation was disbanded, along with its Military Technical School of Aviation for aviation technicians, to be later integrated into a newly formed Technical College of Aviation that moved from Prostejov to Kosice. At the beginning of the 60s, the Technical College of Military Aviation was the sole representative and the only centre of Military Education. The school in Košice was that time offering two-year pilot studies with its graduates promoted to the rank of lieutenants. Education of aviation technicians was performed from staff recruited from apprentice schools and also took two years to accomplish, graduating with the ranks of flight sergeants. The introduction of jet trainers, namely the L - 29 Delfin (Daulphine) in 1992 called for the development of more demanding teaching and training curricula and syllaby. Further qualitative change occurred by reorganizing the Technical College of Aviation, Košice, into Higher Technical College of Aviation starting with 1 August The huge campus available has ensured running of a complex educational programme comprising pilot s ground and flight training, with all the ground aviation specialties included. The educational groups were replaced by departments and education was extended to a four year period. Apart from education of students, the school also provided various conversion and refreshment trainings for the Air Force personnel. In 1967, the Higher Technical College of Aviation enabled the formation of the Military Secondary School of Aviation and in 1970 the Pilot s Officer School was established.

8 THE UNIVERSITY OF MILITARY AVIATION OF THE SLOVAK NATIONAL UPRISING IN KOSICE 1973 In line with the new requirements specified for pilot and aviation specialists training, by order of the President of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, No 8 of 28 June 1972, the University of Military Aviation of SNU, Kosice, came into being, and by order No 9 of the same date, the Military Technical College of Aviation, Presov, was formed. The UMA of SNU in Kosice also owned two subordinate air-regiments, stationed in Prerov and in Kosice, responsible for practical air training. By order of the President No 11 of 22 August 1979, two Faculties of the University were established, namely the Faculty of Command and Engineering and the Faculty of Military Engineering. The faculties incorporated the specialized departments. At the same time the departments of general sciences were formed to provide teaching of humanities and general subjects. Since 1 November 1986 the UMA of SNU has become a centre of educating students and scientists. To further improve flight training, starting with 1 September 1987, a military air training unit was formed in Piestany. Following November 1989, a remarkable era has started. The newly adopted military doctrine and changed international and political relationship lead to the reassessment of the existing system and concepts of military education. Consequently, substantial changes were made in the organizational structure of the UMA of SNU in Kosice. In 1991, the university was split into the academic part and the Air Force Educational and Training Centre, fostering the formation of the Centre for International Flight Training. The changes affected the subordination of flight training units and also the names of the schools, namely the School of Command and Engineering was renamed to the School of Flight Training, and the School of Military-Engineering has turned into the School of Aviation and Engineering and Ground Support. It was the period when the first civilian students were enrolled. The university was run in full compliance with the rules and laws applicable to any other university statewide. In the wake of the split of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic, by Law of the Slovak National Council of the Slovak Republic No185/1993 Coll., the University of Military Aviation of SNU was renamed to the University of Military Aviation of Gen Milan Rastislav Stefanik, Kosice. The same law has, however, disbanded the Faculties of the University By Law of the Slovak National Council of the Slovak Republic No 324/1996 Coll., the University of the Military Aviation of Gen. M. R. Stefanik was renamed to the Air Force Academy of Gen. M. R. Stefanik, Kosice. Starting with 1 October 2001 the Flight Training Squadron of the Air Force Academy of Gen. M. R. Stefanik, Kosice, was formed.

12 TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IN KOSICE FACULTY OF AERONAUTICS 2005 The establishment of the Faculty of Aeronautics Technical University in Kosice was inextricably linked with the rich and long tradition of flying and university educated aviation professionals in Kosice and in particular with the history of the Air Force Academy of General Milan Rastislav Stefanik. The transformation process of military colleges SR in 2004 resulted in the establishment of the Armed Forces Academy of General Milan Rastislav Stefanik in Liptovsky Mikulas and the merge of Air Force Academy in Kosice with the Technical University in Kosice the Law no. 455/2004. The merger of a military and civilian university took place in the university system of the Slovak Republic for the first time and was associated with many problems, especially in the area of legislation, devolution of property, labor relations and finance. The Rector of TUKE Dr.hc mult. prof. Ing. Juraj Sinay, CSc. decided in accordance with applicable legislation of university education, that on 1 September 2004 the Institute of Aeronautics would be established as an intermediary - a part of the Rectorate TUKE, which should ensure students learning, mode of life, operation facilities and especially the preparation of basic documents necessary for the emergence of a new faculty. The final result of the transformation process was declared on 13 December 2004 by the Academic Senate TUKE, chaired by prof. Ing. Liberios Vokorokos, PhD. The meeting approved formation of the Faculty of Aeronautics with its research activities and study programs as the ninth faculty of the Technical University in Kosice, effective from 1 February 2005.

16 TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IN KOSICE The Technical University of Kosice was founded in 1952, but its roots must be sought much deeper in the past. As early as 1657 the Universitas Cassoviensis was established in Kosice, but technical education in Slovakia was only elevated to higher - education level in 1762, when the Austro-Hungarian monarch Maria Theresa established the Mining Academy in Banska Stiavnica. This provided education and promoted research activity in a group of scientific disciplines ranging from ore mining through to production and processing of metal materials. The origins of higher technical education in Kosice reach back to 1937, when the M.R.Stefanik State Technical College was established in the city. Teaching was supposed to start in the academic year 1938/39, but the pre-war events following the Vienna Arbitration caused the college to be moved first to Presov, then to Martin and finally to Bratislava, where it remained and later formed the basis for the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava. The true birth of the Kosice Technical College came on 8th July 1952, when the Czechoslovak Government issued Directive No.30/1952 Statutes setting up three faculties, namely the Faculties of Heavy Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy. These were joined in 1969 by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and in 1978 by the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The important event of the renaming of the College into the Technical University of Kosice occurred on 13th February In 1992 the Faculty of Professional Studies was set up in Presov, which was transformed in 1996 into today s Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies. The year 1992 also saw the introduction of the Faculty of Economics, which meant that the University outgrew its original framework of purely technical disciplines, and it continued in this trend in 1998 with the founding of the present-day Faculty of Arts. The Faculty of Aeronautics of the Technical University of Kosice was established on 1st January In the present TUKE caters for a wide range of educational needs not only in the East- Slovak region, but throughout Slovakia and Central Europe, as in many specializations it is the only centre of education and research in this area. TUKE closely co-operates with other universities and with industrial organizations throughout the region and the Slovak Republic. The number of students currently attending nine TUKE Faculties exceeds 16,000. Almost 900 professors, docents and assistants and the same number of research and administrative staff work here. 17 AVIATION PROVIDES NEW PERSPECTIVES High technologies and high demands on air traffic operation require that the quality of the people working in the aviation field should be high. For selected courses, the Faculty of Aeronautics accepts only the candidates who have passed a demanding medical and psychophysiological test and meet the criteria. For all students, it develops valuable working properties such as consistency, accuracy, reliability; moral and volitional qualities such as courage, honesty and perseverance. These qualities are a valuable bonus, which students of the Faculty of Aeronautics can take into their practice and further life. It has been proved by many aviation experts that studying and working in aviation provide a chance of seeing other worldview possibilities. And not just for flying personnel, but also for all who work at the airports with aircraft, aviation security and equipment. In aviation, people work with a piece of romance, a desire to break away from the ground and look at the world of the third dimension. This inspires the desire to strive to be better and confirms that mankind did not fly up to the sky with the power of muscles, but with the power of knowledge. With a view to increase the interest of young people in aviation, aircraft and studies of air field, the Memorandum for understanding and participation in aviation was signed on 29th May 2013 in Kosice: Airport Kosice - Slovak Technical Museum Museum of Aviation in Kosice - Faculty of Aeronautics Technical University in Kosice - Slovak National Aeroclub Flight School in Bidovce - Secondary Technical School of Engineering in Kosice - Secondary Technical School of Transportation in Kosice - Software company PWC Avis Ltd. - Slovak Aviation Agency Ltd. -
18 KOSICE - RESIDENCE OF THE FACULTY OF AERONAUTICS TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IN KOSICE Kosice is the second largest city of the Slovak Republic. The first written reference to the city with the historical name CASSOVIA dates back to the 13th Century. In the first half of the 14th century Kosice had already been a free royal town. In December 1654 there was the first grammar school established in the University of Academia Cassoviensis, renamed in 1776 to the Royal Academy - Academia Regia Cassoviensis. Kosice city is also interesting with its architecture. The old town has been declared an Urban Conservation Area. In the centre, the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth is known as one of the most monumental expression of Gothic art in Europe. On 9th September 2008 Kosice won the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture 2013.
