2 3 + 2 international student academic program The program gives you a streamlined path to achieve a truly global experience while maintaining academic excellence. You ll begin your academic experience at home, adjusting to university life, then transfer to Arizona State University to study in the United States. Academic programs are seamlessly integrated to include three years of undergraduate study at home, then two additional years of study abroad. Upon successful completion of year four at ASU, you will receive a bachelor s degree from your home institution. After successful completion of year five, you will receive a master s degree from ASU. While the program is primarily aimed at providing a master s degree, it also provides an excellent platform to prepare you to pursue doctoral studies around the world. Partner universities include Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Sichuan University and China University of Petroleum, Beijing. To enter the program, you must meet all academic and legal requirements of both your home institution and Arizona State University. At ASU, you will follow the undergraduate and graduate admissions process for international students (page 14). Modern computational and laboratory facilities are available to support timely research investigations. 9 materials science and engineering Our graduate program in materials science and engineering is one of the largest in the U.S. The flexibility of the program structure encourages students to explore topics at the boundaries between traditional disciplines. There are many research thrusts spanning a wide range of cutting-edge and cross-disciplinary topics that include understanding the structure-property relationships of nanomaterials, applications in energy, security and sustainability. solar energy engineering and commercialization The Solar Energy Engineering and Commercialization graduate program offers advanced interdisciplinary education, enabling graduates to pursue careers that involve solar energy and its utilization. Students select courses from both technical and nontechnical tracks, including solar energy policy and business. mechanical engineering ASU s mechanical engineering graduate faculty and students conduct innovative research in all of the traditional core areas of mechanical engineering with applications to some of society s most pressing problems in energy, environment, human health and transportation. Pre-selection begins with your home institution, which will recommend eligible students to ASU for qualification screening. Upon successful completion of the selection process, submit an online application to ASU no later than March 7 in the same year you plan to attend ASU (fall semester). Take the TOEFL or IELTS test and send scores to ASU Information and online application: global.asu.edu/futurestudents ASU will evaluate the recommended students who have completed their applications. Those who qualify will be granted Conditional Admission to the Graduate College on the recommendation of the ASU academic unit. ASU will notify students who are admitted under the program with an official letter and SEVIS I-20. Use this letter and SEVIS I-20 for your visa application. After you are admitted, you will receive housing options. Students must submit the MMR Immunization Form before they can register for classes. During your first year at ASU (your fourth year of undergraduate study), you may be required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Upon successful completion of your fourth year of undergraduate studies, you are eligible to receive a bachelor s degree from your home institution. The bachelor degree must be completed within the first year of the program at ASU. 13 living at asu healthcare Arizona State University requires that international students have adequate medical and accident insurance coverage. All international students must enroll in the ASU health insurance plan, and the cost for medical coverage is included in the registration billing. There is a special provision for students who have health insurance through their government, or who are under the sponsorship of an agency that is responsible for their educational expenses, including medical coverage. All such coverage must be pre-approved and be equal to or better than the coverage provided by the ASU policy. global.asu.edu/isso/healthinsurance transportation ASU Parking and Transportation offers information on commuter options available to students, from parking passes, free intercampus shuttles and Tempe city Orbit shuttles, and the reduced-cost public transportation U-Pass, which give you access to ride Valley Metro buses and the light rail. Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the United States. The metropolitan area is a low-density area, with areas of activity distributed across the region. 14 admission Your future will be shaped by decisions you make about education now. At ASU, you ll study with outstanding faculty and students. Admission Requirements An international student (F-1 and J-1 visas) is a student who is not a citizen of, or a permanent resident of, or a refugee in the United States of America. Academic Requirement For transfer students with 24 or more college credit hours, a minimum 3.00 GPA from a college or university. (a B or better where A = 4.0).! English Language Proficiency Requirement Applicants whose native language is not English (as defined by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Public Affairs) must provide evidence of English language proficiency. The English proficiency requires a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based) or an IELTS score of 6.5. Certain graduate degree programs have higher requirements. Application Process Pre-selected students must submit an application by March 7 prior to the fall semester they are planning to attend ASU. It is recommended that you apply as early as possible. You will apply to an engineering program at the ASU-Tempe campus. Applicants should pay the application fee and submit official transcripts (in your native language and English), bank statements for financial guarantee, TOEFL or IELTS score and any other items determined by both institutions. Completed applications will be reviewed for admission in the order received. Financial Guarantee All international applicants on F-1 or J-1 visas must provide a Financial Guarantee to show evidence of sufficient funds available for their studies before the application can be processed. ASU Admission ASU will notify students admitted under the program and will send a SEVIS I-20 form to assist with application for an F-1 visa. You are responsible for applying for the visa at your U.S. Consulate. Application requirements and dates for acceptance may vary. Application Deadlines You must submit the Application for Admission, along with the application fee, by the deadline specified for each semester. In order to expedite the evaluation of your application, also submit official transcripts, test scores and supporting credentials immediately.! Application Procedures 1. Complete the Graduate Admission Application. ASU prefers students to apply online at asu.edu/gradapp. 2. Submit the nonrefundable application fee via credit card. Do not send cash or international postal money orders. Application fees cannot be waived or transferred to a future application. 3. Request that an official transcript be sent directly from your school(s) to the ASU Graduate College. Upon graduation or completion of the semester, request that a final transcript be sent directly to ASU to determine final admission status. Official transcripts are certified copies of official documents from each secondary school, college, university and/or technical schools attended. Records must include courses completed, grades or marks earned, and certificates or degrees awarded. Include a certified English translation of all documents not written in English. 4. Submit evidence of English language proficiency. Have your TOEFL or IELTS score sent directly to ASU. TOEFL: The official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score report can be sent directly to ASU from the Educational Testing Service. Submit your financial guarantee. In compliance with Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations, all international applicants on the F-1 (student) or J-1 (exchange) visa must provide evidence of sufficient funds available for their studies. The Financial Guarantee, dated within the past six months, must be co-signed by an authorized bank or representative of a recognized sponsoring agency in the U.S.A. An Affidavit of Support cannot be used in lieu of a bank statement. ASU has a Financial Guarantee Form. ASU requires a bank statement or a bank letterhead that has been cosigned by a banking official. Academic Credential To process your application, all international records must be submitted in the original language, accompanied by an official English translation. Translations must be literal, complete versions of the original records, and the documents must be translated by a university, a government official or an official translation service. You cannot perform your own translation.! All academic credentials and test scores must be official. The Graduate College accepts the following documents as official: Original academic credentials issued by the registrar of the institution attended, bearing the original raised or colored seal of the institution and the signature of your institution s registrar, academic official or recognized international organization. Photocopies of international academic credentials that have been verified as true copies of the original by a responsible official of the institution attended or by an educational representative of the country s government or embassy. Each page must bear the verifying official s signature and stamp. Photocopies of academic credentials that have been certified by a recognized international education organization such as the U.S. Educational Foundation, AMIDEAST or the Institute for International Education. After you have been admitted to ASU Steps to complete before you arrive: SEVIS, student visa and immigration procedures: The ASU SEVIS I-20 form is enclosed with your admission packet. Admitted students must pay the non-refundable SEVIS fee before applying for a student visa at the U.S. Consulate in their home country. The SEVIS fee is separate from the visa application fee. You can pay your SEVIS fee at fmjfee.com/i901fee. The SEVIS I-20 issued by ASU allows you to apply for an F-1 student visa to enter the United States to attend ASU for the semester indicated. Keep your SEVIS I-20 in a secure place, as ASU will not issue a second copy. Visa/Immigration Information: The United States government has strict regulations on issuing I-20 and DS-2019 documents. Important dates can be found at: graduate.asu.edu/ admissions/international/visa_immigration/dates. In order to apply and/or receive a visa to study in the U.S., you are required to provide a permanent street address in the country in which you are a citizen. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also requires us to obtain additional information about you in order to process your visa application. Once we receive your application, you will receive additional information and instructions in our acknowledgement letter. Please be sure to follow those instructions fully. If you plan to attend ASU on a J-1 visa, you will also need to provide a copy of your passport once you are admitted. 16 Financial Guarantee: If you plan on attending ASU on an F-1 or J-1 visa, you must also meet the requirements of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS). Once you are admitted, you will need to fill out a Financial Guarantee form and provide proof of funding to cover one year of study. The breakdown of the expenses for one academic year, and acceptable evidence of financial support is found on the Financial Guarantee. All financial documents are only valid for one year and must be issued within one year of the start of the semester. You can fax these documents to If you are awarded a teaching or research assistantship, the amount of the assistantship may not cover all the funds needed for one year of study. If this happens, you will have to show valid proof of funding to make up the difference.! Travel: Plan to arrive at ASU no later than one week before classes begin according to the information on the SEVIS I-20. ASU cannot authorize you to arrive later or change the information on your SEVIS I-20.! Measles immunization: You must submit your measles (rubeola), mumps and rubella (MMR) immunization form before you can register for classes. The form is included in your admission packet. Student Health Insurance Requirement: Degree-seeking international students and exchange students with F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant status are required to purchase ASU health insurance that includes repatriation/medical evacuation coverage in order to have adequate insurance coverage against illness and accident before being permitted to complete the registration process. For more information: students.asu.edu/internationalstudenthealth ASURITE: After you apply to ASU, you are issued an ASURITE user ID. This ID gives you access to ASU s online student services at My ASU. You must activate your ASURITE user ID online. While activating your ASURITE user ID, set up your ASU (@asu.edu) account. This is the official address to which the university sends communications and is recorded in ASU s electronic directories. If you need help with the activation process, contact the University Technology Office (UTO) Help Desk at helpdesk@asu.edu or Enrollment: Once the F-1 visa is issued and all enrollment requirements are met, you will be permitted to enroll at ASU. Incoming students receive all of the privileges of full-time international students enrolled at ASU in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations, including: student advising for selection of courses, access to library and student resources, etc. Register for courses by contacting your engineering major advisor: engineering.asu.edu/advising! Housing: After you are admitted, you will receive a list of housing options available in the vicinity of the Tempe campus. Select the option that suits you and make arrangements. Arriving at ASU When arriving in the U.S., show your SEVIS I-20 and letter of admission to the U.S. customs/immigration officials at the airport. SEVIS check-in is mandatory. Please report to the International Student and Scholars Office (ISSO) as soon as possible and bring all of your immigration documents with you. ISSO is located at 951 S.
