2 From the Director It had been a while since my last film. This, our latest film, has been an adventure. From the beginning, I knew this would be my greatest cinematic challenge yet. I would go where I had never gone before, let alone to make a film, the Big Bend Ranch State Park. Desolate, dry, insanely hot, and deprived of any water or food, it would become my canvas. I began scouting in February My story called for a very desolate place, the kind of place one could easily be lost in and never be found. I needed a place that could challenge a person's body, mind, and spirit, and this is what I found. After scouting over an area bigger than a lot of eastern states, I found a place that looked perfect. When I asked, this was actually a state property. All it took was a few calls to some friends in Austin and I had the ball rolling. The Ranger at the park, Mr. Rod Trevizo, spent days with me as I discovered specific locations that I wanted for Ruth's story. After a few rattle snakes and flat tires, I had a map of my locations for Book of Ruth. It would take a total of seven trips to the Big Bend area, four trucks, a lot of sunscreen, a year's worth of gasoline, and more determination than ever before to make this film. One of the most remarkable things about this film was its very small crew. I have worked on big and small sets over these past seven years, and I still often remember my very first crew from La Tragedia de Macario., Official Selection 2006 Sundance Film Festival. The objective was to create a film under the formula that created my very first film (La Tragedia de Macario) and to avoid the big crew approach. This would not be a production, this would be a painting, and I needed a few brushes. My crew was composed of five people (including me). Alex Walker would be the Director of Photography, Stephen Villela would be my Producer, Carolyn King would be my Art Director, and Mikaila Hernandez would be my Sound Gal. This small group of unreasonably dedicated individuals would rally up in the middle of nowhere to create a painting in motion, our film. It has been a while since I've heard more powerful words than I love you. When I got present to the power of human love in a condition that strips away all our stories, reasons, and justifications, I got present to a powerful and irreverent love story - Book of Ruth. 3 Synopsis Logline: Love can grow even in the driest of places. LUPITA Don t tell me to leave you. Where you go, I ll go. When Ruth loses her father, love, and her faith, she embarks on a treacherous journey north and unknowingly loses herself in the desert. Surrounded by silence and a vast emptiness, she meets a friend, and together they will discover an unreasonable form of love. Ruth would walk a hundred miles, without food or water through the desert for a fighting chance to have to most basic of human rights to love and be loved in return.

4 PRINCIPAL CAST Casandra grew up in the Nuevo Laredo/Laredo border, where she began acting locally at the age of 14. Since then, Casandra has been actively involved in the theater community appearing in such plays as Romeo and Juliet, Cabaret, and Blood Wedding/Bodas de Sangre. A border girl through and through, Casandra s interests range from Pedro Infante films to Shakespeare plays. Her love for classical theater led her to workshop for a summer at the Texas Shakespeare Festival. In 2013 she made her feature film debut in Pablo Veliz s Book of Ruth. This became only the second acting project where she got to speak in her native language. Although acting is her instrument of choice, Casandra is also passionate about creating art around her. When she is not acting, Casandra is actively involved in her community s theater scene. She is an active member of the Laredo Theater Guild International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to produce plays. Casandra Canales as Ruth

5 PRINCIPAL CAST Marycarmen Lopez as Lupita Marycarmen began acting in her backyard in Mexico. Growing up, she built sets out of cardboard boxes, which she collected from the corner store next door to her house. Along with her siblings and friends, she created story lines, improvised scenes and recreated what they saw in movies. She was a wide-eyed five year-old who thought everything she witnessed on screen was happening in reality and it wasn't until her mother explained to her that the actors were only 'playing' that she understood the craft. So impacted by this discovery, she realized she wanted to continue 'playing' in her backyard or anywhere else a stage presented itself. because she realized the only thing that was real was what she felt when she saw films, moments so tangible that they become a part of you. Marycarmen graduated from the San Antonio Film School at Harlandale High School and studied Television Production and Theatre at Our Lady of the Lake University. She moved to Los Angeles during her sophomore year to focus on acting. Marycarmen currently pursues her dream of acting in San Antonio.

6 CREW Pablo Véliz Director Writer and Director Pablo Véliz is a working visual artist based in San Antonio. He is a graduate from the University of Texas at San Antonio. At age 22,Véliz wrote, directed, produced, and edited his first feature film, La Tragedia de Macario, which was selected in the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and several other prestigious festivals. Currently,Veliz continues to work in the medium of film and photography. Stephen Villela Producer, Casting Director Stephen graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Communication Arts. Starting his career in audio production, he has since become an all-around filmmaker being able to take on any role on set. Most recently, Stephen taught a Video Production course at Communications Arts High School in San Antonio from and continues to work as a freelance filmmaker in Texas. Aside from filmmaking, Stephen also has many years of experience in technical theatre specializing in sound and lighting design.

7 CREW Carolyn King graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a degree in Fine Art Photography. Her passion for creativity in photography and interest in self-expression lead her to explore the film medium as a new realm of self-discovery. Since graduating from university, she has fallen deeply in love with acting and the art of performance, specifically driven by the intricacies in acting that connect us to something real outside of the camera. Carolyn is a dedicated film actor and conceptual artist, living, working and playing in Houston, TX. Carolyn King Producer, Art Director As a strong believer in the necessity of artistic expression in life, Mikaila graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Radio-TV-Film. Her love for music and storytelling began at home and inspired her to host her own radio show on the college station KVRX, which featured underground bilingual free-styling artists. She moved to San Antonio two years ago to teach Animation and A/V Production at a local high school and to further her experience as an audio recordist and mixer. 8 CREW Alex Walker Director of Photography Alex started his career working on local commercials for the South Texas market at the age of 15. Interested in learning all he could about filmmaking, he went on to minor work on Friday Night Lights and My Generation where he discovered a passion for camera work and lighting. Since then Alex has shot several feature films as well as national and regional ad campaigns. His work won him the award for Best Cinematography at the Sunset Int l FF in 2012 for the feature film No One Will Know. Alex continues to work as a director of photography on various shorts and features across the state. He is based in Austin.
