1 Summer Opportunities for Upper School Students Below is a list of summer opportunities for which Potomac has received information. This is not a comprehensive list of summer programs and opportunities available only the ones that have sent Potomac information or Potomac students have attended. Comprehensive websites such as Teen Life, CampPage, or Internships.com may prove helpful in identifying additional summer opportunities. ACADEMICS & ARTS Air Force Academy Summer Seminar Offers a unique opportunity to experience the Air Force Academy first-hand. It is especially designed for high school juniors heading into their senior year to get a realistic perspective of cadet life. The application is open from 1 December 2015 to 15 January To apply go to Air Force Academy STEM Engineering and Construction Camp This camp is designed to provide high school students with a world-class experience in STEM skills following a Build the Design model. This one week program is supervised and led by engineers and located at the US Air Force Academy. Learn more at Air Force Academy Summer Sports Camps Summer Falcon Sports Camps are offered for students aged 8 to 18 in numerous sports and led by Air Force head coaches. For more information visit American University School of Communication Discover the World of Communication is open to all high school students grades 9 through 12, including those students entering 9th grade in the fall. Classes are taught by American University School of Communication faculty and communication professionals. Activities, guest speakers, events, and field trips occur regularly throughout the summer. Past trips include viewing live television and radio broadcasts at NBC4, WTTG, Fox5, NPR and ESPN Radio. American University School of International Studies Students will broaden their understanding of international affairs by enrolling in a 3-credit college class in foreign policy, international conflict resolution, or global health and the environment. Small, seminar-style classes enable professors to challenge and engage students. The courses are complemented with guest speakers, visits to DC sites such as the State Department and Pentagon, and workshops to build college skills. 2 American Youth Leadership Program Cyprus Leadership training and exchange program for US high school students and adult mentors. It is supported by a grant from the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by Legacy International. The 27 day program focuses on the theme of environment and climate change and takes participants to Cyprus to explore sustainable management and learn about careers in science, technology and environmental resource management. More information can be found at ArcheoSpain High School Field Schools Offering two of the world s only programs specifically designed to expose high school students aged 16 and 17 to the challenges and rewards of hands-on archeology. Students join international teams digging at the roman forum of pollentia on Mallorca or at the medieval castle of Zorita east of Madrid. Visit Barnard College Summer in New York City Pre-College Program Barnard College of Pre-College Programs offers learning and leadership opportunities for male and female high school students who have completed the 10th or 11th grade, including the Young Women s Leadership Institute and the coed Summer in New York City academic program which includes classes adapted from the Barnard undergraduate curriculum. Brandeis University High School Programs College-level summer programs that offer high school students from across the globe the opportunity to learn app design, attend a Global Youth Summit on the Future of Medicine or to immerse themselves in artistic (BIMA) and intellectual (Genesis) discovery. Boston College Summer Experience Rising seniors can take classes for college credit and enjoy an academic experience that is complemented by recreational and social activities in and around the city of Boston. Course offerings include natural and computer sciences, history, economics, writing, film, philosophy, languages, political science, psychology, sociology, and theology. For more information visit Boston University Pre-College Youth Summer Programs A variety of programs for kids of all ages, including offerings such as: High School Honors program (earn college credit taking undergraduate courses), Research Institute in Science and Engineering, Institute for Television, Film and Radio Production, Program in Math for Young Scientists, Sargent Center Outdoor Education Adventure Camp, Summer Theatre Institute, Tanglewood Institute sponsored by the BU School of Music (work with college symphony orchestra professionals and the Boston Symphony Orchestra), Visual Arts Institute, Summer Reading Program. 3 A joint venture between the United States and Canada, this five-week summer math program is hosted by a different college each year. Apply online at Catholic University CUArch The Experiences in Architecture program at The Catholic University of America is an intense three-week workshop for students interested in architecture or other design-related fields. More information is available at Summer at Carleton Liberal Arts Experience The Carleton Liberal Arts Experience (CLAE) program introduces the strengths of a liberal arts education through an array of courses in science, art, social sciences, and technology. Students of African American descent or students who have an interest in African American culture are encouraged to apply. Summer at Carleton Writing Program Summer writing program for juniors with strong reading and writing skills can experience Carleton and learn to write effective academic essays. Carleton Summer Science Institute Taught by Carleton Science Faculty, this program is structured for college-bound high school sophomores and juniors who have a desire to learn how different areas of science all link together. Carnegie Mellon Summer of Exploration Summer programs in fine arts, architecture, design, drama, music, and video game design for rising juniors and seniors. Go to for information. CATALYST Academy, Cornell University Diversity Programs in Engineering A one-week summer residential program for underrepresented high school students who excel in math and science, enjoy solving problems, and want to learn more about engineering. Application available online at Financial assistance available. University of Chicago Summer Session A wide array of programs for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students are taught in small classes by professors and experienced lecturers, and can select courses from among 150 offerings for which they will receive undergraduate college credit. Courses include arts and sciences, ancient and modern languages, economics, philosophy and undergraduate business courses. For more information go to College of William and Mary Pre-Collegiate Summer Program in Early American History Open to rising high school juniors and seniors. A summer residential program at William and Mary in which high school students earn four collegiate academic credits while studying

4 on site at the historic places and museums in Virginia. For more information go to College of William & Mary Camp Shakespeare One-week day-camp for young actors (ages 14 17) who wish to study the acting of Shakespeare s plays. Camp directors will be joined by various members of the VSF Acting Company to instruct the campers in the playing of Shakespeare s language, stage combat, improvisation and clowning as part of the week s instruction. Colorado College Summer Programs Choose from an array of course offerings and participate in activities ranging from film discussion nights to hiking and camping. For information go to Columbia University Summer High School Programs Columbia University offers a variety of summer programs for high school students including study in Barcelona, a pre-college experience at Columbia s campus in New York City, and a new program of study in the Middle East at Columbia and King s Academy in Jordan. For more information go to Computers and Technology at Virginia Tech Virginia Tech s College of Engineering invites rising junior and senior girls to participate in C-Tech2. The focus of the program is to develop and sustain the interests in women in engineering and the sciences. Visit the website at Concordia Language Villages Youth programs in a multitude of languages. Everything from the music played to the dishes used in the dining hall reflect the culture each was designed to represent. Campers are immersed in the world of a native speaker. For more details, Crow Canyon Archaeological Center High School Programs The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is dedicated to understanding, teaching, and helping to preserve the rich history of the ancestral Pueblo people (also called the Anasazi) of the American Southwest. Students can choose between two summer programs: the High School Field School (three weeks long) or the High School Archaeology Camp (one week long). More information is available at CURIE Academy at Cornell University s College of Engineering A one week residential program designed for high school girls who excel in math and science, and who want to learn more about careers in engineering. Qualified girls should have completed at least Algebra II, have advanced in science through the eleventh grade level, and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Selection is also based on the quality of the application essay and extracurricular interests and experiences. Application deadline is usually March 1. Information and application forms are available at Duke University Summer Session Duke Summer College for High School Students is for rising juniors and seniors and offers the opportunity to earn academic credit. Duke Summer Academy for High School Students offers personal enrichment classes with a global perspective. Visit

5 Emory University Pre-College Program The Emory Pre-College Program give college-bound high school student a glimpse of academic and residential life at a top-ranked national university. High school students may enroll in classes with college students, earn transferable college credit, and explore topics with professors who are the leading experts in their fields. More information can be found at Foundation for Teaching Economics One-week programs held on select college campuses around the country (i.e. Emory, William & Mary, Cornell, Babson, etc.) and led by university economics professors. The programs are designed to help students develop an appreciation for different leadership styles, understand how economic reasoning is integral to decision making, and think about how economics affect public policy choices. Apply online at Furman Summer Scholars The Summer Scholars program is an academic enrichment program for rising juniors and seniors designed to model the collegiate academic experience, enabling students to learn more about a particular subject while acquiring skills that will further prepare them for their college career. Choose from two one-week long programs. More information is available at Georgetown University Summer Programs Georgetown offers a variety of summer programs for high school students including: Summer College, Fundamentals of Business, International Relations, American Politics and Public Affairs, Journalism, Performing Arts, Environmental Science, Computer Science, and National Security and Counterintelligence. For more information go to George Washington University Summer Offerings A variety of programs are offered in a number of subject areas, including STEM, the arts, leadership and more. There is a college intensive program for rising juniors and seniors in which college credit can be earned and also summer intensive programs that expand and deepen knowledge of a topic through collaborative learning and exploration of the diverse intellectual and cultural resources of Washington, DC. For information go to Great Books Summer Program The Senior Program provides bright students from all around the world the opportunity to hone their critical and analytical thinking skills and intellectual risk-taking.students gather on the campus of Amherst College, Stanford University, Oxford University or Dublin University to read and discuss selections from works of literature. For more information go to Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics An intensive six-week residential program with college-level mathematics for talented and highly motivated high school students. Go to for more information. Harvard Summer School Two programs: Pre-College Program is a two-week residential experience featuring noncredit courses with a choice of over 50 courses. The Secondary School Program is a for credit seven-week session with over 200 courses from which to choose.

6 For more information go to Introduction to Engineering (ITE) at University of Virginia The primary goal of the Center for the Diversity in Engineering's Introduction to Engineering (ITE) program, established in 1987 as MITE, is to introduce rising high school seniors to the theory and practice of engineering through lectures, labs, and exercises in engineering design, applied math, and basic science. Participants will also be introduced to various engineering disciplines through lectures and demonstrations. More information can be found at Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation (EI) EI is an exciting, hands-on summer course for high school students interested in engineering. This program is offered at the JHU Homewood campus in Baltimore and at other sites in Maryland, California, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania and Washington. Visit for further details. Johns Hopkins University Pre-College Program Two programs are offered: Discover Hopkins and Summer University. Visit the Johns Hopkins website: Kenyon Young Writers Program An intensive two-week writing program for intellectually curious, motivated high-school students who value writing. Admission is selective and based on the student s application essay and a teacher s recommendation. For more information go to and click on Workshops. LEAD Summer Engineering Institute at the University of Virginia The aim is to introduce students to careers in engineering by challenging the students to solve real-world engineering challenges through various learned approaches. Hands-on laboratory experience, lectures, corporate/plant site visits and team based project work will be stressed. More information can be found at University of Maryland Terp Young Scholars Program Demanding pre-college program in which high school students pursue academic interests, discover career opportunities, earn three university credits, and explore university life. More information can be found here: Middlebury/Monterey Summer Language Academy Experience four weeks of language and cultural immersion at our enriching summer program for 8 th 12 th grade students. For more information, visit MITES at MIT MITES (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) is a six week program that prepares rising high school seniors for careers in engineering and science. If selected for the program, all educational, housing, meal, and activity costs are covered for the full six weeks. You are responsible for your own transportation costs to and from the program. 7 Over 100 freshman and sophomore level courses in a variety of academic disciplines are available to high school students in the college preparation program. There are courses available for credit as well as IN FOCUS Seminars which are two week non-credit courses designed to expose students to Northwestern faculty highlighting themes relevant today. Information and an application available online at Northwestern University High School Institute (The Cherub Program) Programs in Film (production, screenwriting, acting on camera) Theatre (theatre arts, design/tech, musical theatre) and Debate. For more information go to Oberlin Foresight Prep Foresight Oberlin offers a rare opportunity for high school students concerned about social and environmental issues to better understand and realize their personal and professional potential, and capacity for positive impact. For more information, visit University of Pennsylvania Management & Technology Summer Institute The Management and Technology Summer Institute is a rigorous and rewarding for-credit summer program for rising high school seniors and a select few rising juniors interested in exploring the integration of technological concepts and management principles. Sponsored by the Fisher Program in Management and Technology, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and The Wharton School, classes are taught by Penn faculty and entrepreneurs. Activities include field trips to companies and R&D facilities, intensive team projects, and opportunities to learn about the principles and practice of technological innovation. Visit Phillips Andover Academy Summer School A five-week residential summer program for freshman, sophomores and juniors to take summer courses and prepare for the rigors of the best colleges and for the rigors of leading and serving in this complex world. More information available at Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School A five-week summer program for freshman, sophomores and juniors for academic study, athletics, and exploration that carry participants far beyond the classroom and the playing fields. More information available at Princeton University Summer Journalism Program The goal of Princeton s summer journalism program is to diversify college and professional newsrooms by encouraging outstanding students from lower income backgrounds to pursue careers in journalism. This program is for rising seniors. All expenses, including students travel costs to and from the program are paid for by the program. Go to for more information. Programs in Math for Young Scientists (PROMYS) PROMYS is a six-week summer program at Boston University designed to encourage motivated high school students to explore the creative world of mathematics in a supportive community of peers, counselors, research mathematicians, and visiting scientists.

Ross Mathematics Program The Ross Program at the Ohio State University is an intensive summer experience designed to encourage motivated pre-college students to explore mathematics. During those eight weeks, students are immersed in a world of mathematical discovery. Dr. Arnold Ross founded this multi-level program at Notre Dame University in Its growth was then spurred by the launch of the Sputnik satellite and the subsequent surge of interest in science education. Sarah Lawrence Programs for High School Students Residential courses in creative writing, musical theatre, filmmaking, and social justice. Online registration and information is available at Savannah School of Art and Design (SCAD) Pre-College Summer Programs Two programs available: Rising Star allows incoming seniors to enroll in two college level classes and begin building a professional portfolio; Summer Seminars are weeklong workshops for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors to develop creativity through exciting art and design projects. Visit School of the Museum of Fine Arts pre-college Summer Studio (Boston) Rigorous four week art program for high school students interested in the visual arts. Graduates can earn up to four college credits. For more information go to Stanford University High School Summer College Students have the opportunity to take undergraduate courses and earn Stanford University credit. Students have opportunities to attend cultural and social events both on and off campus and to use the university athletic facilities. Admission is competitive and applying early is strongly encouraged. Summer Academy at St. John s College Modeled on the St. John s Program, the Summer Academy offers high school juniors and seniors a rich experience reading and discussing original texts in small discussion classes (tutorials and seminars) with faculty members experienced in guiding thoughtful and lively conversations. 9 Summer Learning Institutes at Susquehanna University Week-long residential programs include Leadership Institute for Entrepreneurship, Choral Institute, Wind Ensemble Institute, Writer s Workshop and Stream Ecology Institute. For more information visit University of Virginia Young Writers Workshop The goal of this program is to bring together a community of writers in a supportive, noncompetitive environment where they can live and work together as artists. Faculty members are professional authors interested in developing new talent and in bringing their personal experiences to a workshop setting. For more information go to Washington Studio School Each summer in July, WSS offers an intensive program in drawing, painting and sculpture. Students are exposed to art from ancient to contemporary times, and the program includes structured visits to a museum and an artist s studio. More information is available at Washington University in St. Louis High School Summer Scholars Program Take college level courses in the languages, arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. 10 INTERNSHIPS J. Craig Venter Institute The J. Craig Venter Institute is a not-for-profit research institute dedicated to the advancement of the science of genomics; the understanding of its implications for society; and the communication of those results to the scientific community, the public, and policymakers. Founded by J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., the Institute is home to more than 400 scientists and staff with expertise in human and evolutionary biology, genetics, bioinformatics/informatics, high-throughput DNA sequencing, information technology, functional genomics, and genomic and environmental policy research. National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research The National Institutes of Health Internship Program offers high school students an opportunity to perform biomedical research at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). Students work in the lab alongside some of the world s most accomplished scientists. Students earn a monthly stipend which varies according to the individual s educational level. Students must be at least 16 years of age and either citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Smithsonian Associates Summer Camp Youth Teaching Assistants The Smithsonian is currently looking for Youth Teacher Assistants (YTA) ages 15 and older to support instructors at the Smithsonian Summer Camp. Camp sessions run from June 20 to August 19. Summer camp sessions are held on the National Mall in the Ripley Center. YTA applications are accessible at and click YTAs. Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study The Smithsonian offers a variety of summer internships for students ages 16 and older. 11 LEADERSHIP Advanced Leadership Academy (ALA) HOBY s Advanced Leadership Academy is a program for juniors and seniors who will learn to understand and develop themselves along the seven dimensions of the Social Change Model of Leadership, to identify their own strengths and capabilities, to create a plan to lead and implement a service project or social enterprise in their home communities within one year following the ALA, and to earn college credit from George Mason University. For more information Leadership on the Lawn at the University of Virginia Week-long program for rising juniors and seniors that will strengthen leadership skills while living the UVA student experience. Live in dorms, eat in dining halls, meet new friends, and become a better leader with help from the UVA faculty and students. There is an exploration of sense of place, leadership and environmental ethics. More information at Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia The Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership was founded in 1993 to improve the quality of political leadership in the Commonwealth by preparing Virginia s emerging leaders for entry into public life. The Institute seeks participants of all political affiliations and socio-economic backgrounds from all parts of the state who are involved in their communities. 12 SERVICE Brandeis University Service Corps Each day will challenge and motivate students as they work together with teens from all over the world on hands-on volunteer projects. Earn 40 hours of community service credit while honing leadership skills and gaining a deeper understanding of each individual s ability to help those in need and develop projects and ideas to take back home. For more information visit National Gallery of Art The Department of Teacher, School, and Family Programs recruits local high school student volunteers for the summer term to assist with clerical and administrative tasks that support the department s education programs. Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps The mission of DCR s Virginia State Parks Youth Corps (VSPYC) is to engage Virginia s youth in a structured program of important conservation and park projects on public lands while providing learning that fosters teamwork, self-esteem, social responsibility and respect for the environment. For more information visit: ActionQuest and Lifeworks ActionQuest and Lifeworks offer international educational opportunities for teenagers, with a strong emphasis on building self-reliance as well as personal and social responsibility. Summer adventure camps for teens include sailing camps, scuba camps, community service camps, and marine biology camps. Spanish courses are designed to quickly develop fluency in the Spanish language for both individual students and groups of all ages and levels of experience. 14 Spanish Learning Abroad offers an immersion program in Spain for 9th-12th graders. Students will live in with a home stay family in the Seville area, receive Spanish language instruction, and participate in cultural activities and tours. More information can be found at SAI SAI s Florence High School Program gives students the opportunity to experience the vitality and excitement of Italian culture while earning university credit from the Florence University of the Arts. More information can be found at SYA High School Study Abroad and Homestay Five-week summer programs for high school students who are dedicated to dramatically improving their language proficiency in China, France, Italy and Spain. Students will live with carefully selected and caring host families and participate in numerous extracurricular opportunities. Visit SYA is now also offering a three-week summer program in Spain that is open to students entering 10 th, 11 th and 12 th grades. 15 CAMPS Acadia Institute of Oceanography The Advanced Marine Science Camp Program is for students aged who have completed one year of high school science. The two-week session offers campers the chance to explore collegiate options and prepare reports and analysis of their field work. For more information go to Audubon Naturalist Society Nature Camps High school camps include advanced backpacking and advanced mountain outpost. There is also a Teen Naturalist training program. All camps are designed to foster environmental awareness and expand natural and cultural knowledge. For more information go to Nature Camp in the George Washington National Forest, Rockbridge County, Virginia Nature Camp is a private, non-profit, residential, co-ed summer camp specializing in natural history and environmental science education, one of the oldest of its kind in the country. Since 1942 Nature Camp has sought to train a corps of interested, knowledgeable youth, 5th - 12th grades, to conserve and protect the environment and to become wise stewards of the earth's natural resources.
