Summer Academic Programs
GET A PREVIEW OF COLLEGE AT CARLETON COLLEGE S Carleton faculty members and student assistants help motivated high school students like you develop the critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills you need in college and beyond at our intensive three-week summer academic programs. You can expect to gain both depth and breadth of knowledge in your field of interest through our three-course curriculum that balances a substantial project in a core course with two supplementary courses that expose you to other aspects of the field. Plus, all of our programs require on-campus residency, so you ll have plenty of time to explore Carleton s beautiful campus and discover what life at a residential college is like. LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/SUMMER
CHOOSE FROM OUR SIX ENGAGING PROGRAMS: Writing Program July 5 24, 2015 Language and Global Issues Institute July 5 24, 2015 Quantitative Reasoning Institute July 12 31, 2015 Science Institute (Session A) July 12 31, 2015 (Session B) July 19 August 7, 2015 Computer Science Institute July 19 August 7, 2015 Humanities Institute July 26 August 14, 2015
Carleton College is one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country, and our summer programs will give you the chance to experience firsthand how rewarding studying at a top school can be. Our professors are talented teachers who will help you see the world in new ways. You ll meet other smart students like yourself, including current Carleton students who will introduce you to campus life and guide you through challenging and fun program activities. Plus, all of our programs offer college credit that is accepted by Carleton and many other colleges and universities. The small classes and setting was nice. I m used to 30+ people classes, and have been looking for colleges with small class sizes, so this gave me a good experience for the inclusiveness and detail of small classes. LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/SUMMER
WE THINK YOU LL LOVE IT HERE, AND WE RE NOT THE ONLY ONES. Every class was truly taught at a college level, and we had new material every day. I got a chance to prove to others, but most importantly myself, that I can handle the college life and shouldn t be afraid to follow my dreams. HERE S WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT CARLETON: #1, commitment to undergraduate teaching U.S. News & World Report, 2014 #2, national liberal arts colleges (in contribution to the public good) Washington Monthly, 2014 #8, national liberal arts colleges U.S. News & World Report, 2014 #16, American colleges and universities Forbes, 2014 Upper Midwest s premier liberal arts college Fiske Guide to Colleges, 2014 One of the most scenic college campuses Bing.com/travel
SUMMER WRITING PROGRAM July 5 24, 2015 The passion for writing and thinking critically at SWP is very motivating, and it s not competitive the teachers want you to improve. Study advanced reading selections in the humanities and social sciences. Sharpen reading and analytical skills in your core course while you participate in exciting discussions and learn new strategies for writing critically in your supplementary courses. You ll receive written evaluations of the three college-level essays you write during the program. LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/SWP
LANGUAGE AND GLOBAL ISSUES SUMMER INSTITUTE July 5 24, 2015 Delve into intensive language study while exploring current global issues. Your confidence in speaking will dramatically increase as your secondlanguage skills improve. The supplementary courses will discuss challenges facing the global community. You may choose to study French or Spanish (you should have an intermediate level of competency in the language you choose). LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/LGI
SUMMER QUANTITATIVE REASONING INSTITUTE July 12 31, 2015 Learn how to use quantitative data to both support your own arguments and evaluate others arguments. You ll design and complete a collaborative research project in your core course and present your findings using text, figures, and graphs at the research symposium at the end of the institute. LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/SQRI
CARLETON SUMMER SCIENCE INSTITUTE (Session A) July 12 31, 2015 (Session B) July 19 August 7, 2015 Don t just learn about science do science. You ll design a collaborative research project, gather your own data, and run experiments in your core course, culminating in a presentation at the research symposium at the end of the program. You ll also experience firsthand the integration of the scientific fields while honing your scientific inquiry skills in your supplementary courses. LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/CSSI
SUMMER COMPUTER SCIENCE INSTITUTE July 19 August 7, 2015 Go from theory to practice as you explore multiple areas within the field of computer science. You ll apply your systematic problem-solving skills and computer science knowledge to a real problem within a research group in your core course, and you ll demonstrate your solution at a symposium at the end of the institute. I found the theory behind each of the fields to be of the most value. Each class forced me to think in a way that I had never done before. LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/SCSI
SUMMER HUMANITIES INSTITUTE July 26 August 14, 2015 Explore the legacies of Rome as you study advanced topics in history, English literature, and art history. In both your core and supplementary courses, you ll learn to use the tools and techniques of research, interpretation, and presentation that are essential to humanistic inquiry. LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/SHI
LEARN FROM THE BEST All of our summer academic programs are taught by the same Carleton faculty members that U.S. News & World Report ranks first in teaching. The professors and student assistants in all your courses will promote collaboration, passion, and hands-on learning. You will leave the program more knowledgeable and excited about these topics than you were when you arrived. Plus, you ll use the state-of-the-art laboratory and library facilities that our faculty members and students use for their own research. No matter what classes and activities you choose, you ll learn in a safe and dynamic place with people who inspire and encourage you.
WORK HARD. PLAY HARD. When you re not in class, there s plenty to do! Strike up a conversation in the dorm lounge with new friends who share your interests. Head to the Recreation Center to play racquetball, work out in the fitness center, or climb the rock wall. Explore Carleton s 880-acre arboretum. Join a game of Ultimate on the Bald Spot. Take field trips to the nearby Twin Cities and attend special events on campus like dances and campfires with the Carleton student staff. You ll learn a lot here, but we promise that you ll also have plenty of time for fun. LEARN MORE AT GO.CARLETON.EDU/SUMMER
