6 What is an Eating Disorder? Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight. The four most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified. Bulimia Bulimia Nervosa is a serious eating disorder that is characterized by bingeing and purging. Symptoms include: repeated episodes of bingeing and purging; eating beyond the point of fullness and feeling out of control during a binge; purging after a binge; frequent dieting; and extreme concern with body weight and shape. 11 What to Ask and Expect Many people want to know how long the treatment will last, but no therapist can really tell you that because the road to recovery is different for each individual. You also need to know that even the most renowned therapist in the world may not be the best therapist for you, just as no one outfit is the perfect fit for everyone. If you feel that the first or second or even third person you see does not feel like the right fit, don t be afraid to make a change. If it isn t working, you have no obligation to stay. And don t think that just because the first person you see does not work out, no therapy is going to work. Members of the Treatment Team PRIMARY CARE PHYSICAN: A doctor that is knowledgeable with eating disorders should be your first stop in the process of treatment and is a MUST for everyone with an eating disorder. The physician will assess the individual s physical condition. The physician will continue to be part of the treatment team and will monitor the person to make sure they remain medically stable. THERAPIST: The therapist focuses on unwrapping eating disorder symptoms, as well as the underlying issues that caused and continue to maintain the eating disorder. The therapist will also work on steps for recovery and healthier coping skills so the individual will no longer need to rely on the eating disorder. Types of therapy include Individual, Group Therapy, Family Therapy, Art Therapy, Movement Therapy, etc. NUTRITIONIST/DIETITIAN: At the beginning the role of the nutritionist is to stabilize one s nutrition and correct any deficits. The nutritionist will help develop a nutritional plan that meets the individual s needs, stabilize the body s chemistry, and establish healthy eating patterns. Their goal should not be to change eating habits overnight, but to promote a healthier relationship with the food. PSYCHIATRIST: Psychopharmacological intervention is now considered a very important part of eating disorders treatment for a large portion of those battling. The psychiatrist will prescribe medicine to help correct mood disturbances (i.e. depression and anxiety). Medications may help curb obsessive and compulsive thoughts and rituals. DENTIST: Physical changes in the mouth are one of the first signs an eating disorder is present. Studies show that up to 89% of bulimics show signs of tooth erosion, and 28% of all bulimic cases are first diagnosed by dental professionals. When on the path to recovery, it is imperative to see a dentist to check for any erosion, bone loss, and/or damage done. Questions to ask a potential therapist 1. How much experience have you had working with eating disorders? 2. What percentage of your practice is devoted to people with eating disorders? 3. What kind of professional training do you have? Education? Licenses? 4. What do you charge for a session? Do you have any kind of sliding scale? 5. Do you take insurance? Which plans? What if I do not have insurance or mental health benefits under my health care plan? 6. What medical information do you need? Will I need a medical evaluation before entering your care? 7. What is your therapeutic approach? 8. How do you determine what treatment regimen I need? 9. Do you work with a treatment team? 10. What are your goals for treatment? 11. What is your appointment availability? How long does an appointment last? How often will we be meeting? allianceforeatingdisorders.com 11
