Eur R E K L A M A GUIDE TO TRICITY Kamil Gozdan/AG Długie Pobrzeże Street During the EURO, you should not only have in your calendar the dates of the matches in the PGE Arena, but also have sightseeing written into your schedule with acompulsory exclamation mark after it, as the Tricity is one of the most beautiful spots in Poland WHAT CAN YOU DO BETWEEN MATCHES? Monika Rosmanowska * * A short disclaimer to begin with. With regards to limited space here and the wealth of tourist attractions of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, I will present only selected locations. This is only a starting point for getting to know the Tricity conurbation. I can assure you there is loads to discover, and it merits repeat visits! Gdańsk The largest city of the Tricity conurbation stretches for approximately 50 km along the Bay of Gdańsk, covering an area of 415 m 2. Gdańsk is one of the most beautiful cities in Poland with over athousand years of history, bursting with historic buildings, monuments and interesting places. It is the second-largest port in Poland after the Szczecin-Świnoujście port complex, and houses the State Baltic Opera, the Baltic Philharmonic and the Wybrzeże Theatre. Kamil Gozdan/AG The Royal Road Długa Street is the landmark street running through the centre of the Old Town. A beautiful part of Gdańsk, you can find the most important historical buildings here: the late-gothic Town Hall, which is a branch of the Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Gdańska (Gdańsk History Museum) (there is an observation point at the top of its 50-metre high tower); the Post Office building with its reconstructed interiors; the Renaissance Ferbers House dated 1560, the Renaissance Lwi Zamek (Lion s Castle) built in 1569; and the Schumanns House, adorned with a statue of Zeus. At the end of the street is the beautiful Złota Brama (Golden Gate). Długa Street turns into Długi Targ (Long Market), at the end of which is the Zielona Brama (Green Gate). There are lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants here, and also several beautiful buildings: the 15 th century Dwór Artusa (Artus Court), a branch of the Gdańsk History Museum, housing the largest tiled stove in Europe at 10.6 metres high; the neighbouring Dom Ławników (Aldermen s House), where the Lady from the Window appears twice daily at 1.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m.; and the Złoty Dom (Golden House), taking its name from the metallic ore covering its statues. A fountain around a statue of Neptune also adorns Długi Targ. Długie Pobrzeże Street on leaving the Zielona Brama don t miss the chance to take a walk along the promenade by the Motława River, where you can see a line of Gothic water locks in the following order: the 14 th century Krowia Lock; the 15 th century Chlebnicka Lock, the 15 th century Mariacka Lock, Św. Ducha Lock, and the famous 15 th century Crane. The Crane a branch of the Centralne Muzeum Morskie (Polish Maritime Museum), ul. Szeroka 67/68, tel , opening hours: closed Mondays, Tuesday Friday open a.m p.m., Saturday and Sunday a.m p.m.; starting 1 July: Monday Sunday a.m p.m.; normal admission fee PLN 8, concessions PLN 5. A unique combination of water lock, tower and port crane. The oldest surviving port crane in Europe. The exhibition rooms show how port navigation used to work, techniques for loading goods, a merchant s office and a bourgeois salon, and also workshops typical for a city of craftsmen: a sail-maker s, ship s carpenter s, and a rope maker s. The inner workings of the crane mechanism are a popular tourist attraction. The SS Sołdek a branch of the Centralne Muzeum Morskie, ul. Ołowianka 9-13, tel , opening hours: Tuesday Sunday a.m p.m.; from 1 July: Monday Sunday a.m p.m.; normal admission fee PLN 8, concessions PLN 5; a pass which includes a visit to the Granaries on Ołowianka island and the Crane costs PLN 18 (normal) and PLN 11 (concessions). The ship is moored by Ołowianka (Lead Island, flanked on the one side by the Motława River, and on the other by the Na Stępce Canal), opposite Długie Pobrzeże Street, just by the entrance to the main headquarters of the Centralne Muzeum Morskie (Polska Filharmonia Bałtycka the Polish Baltic Philharmonic is based in the refurbished old Ołowianka Power Station on Ołowianka). Launched in 1948, the Sołdek is one of six coal and iron ore carrying vessels commissioned from the Gdańsk Shipyard by the Gdynia- Ameryka Linie Żeglugowe SA, and equipped for exporting coal and importing iron ore to Poland. It is named after Stanisław Sołdek, a model worker R E K L A M A

2 metro.pl euro 2012 from the Gdańsk Shipyard. In the course of its 30 years of service, the Sołdek made 1479 journeys to Belgium, Denmark and Sweden, transporting over 35 million tons of coal and iron ore. Mariacka Street picturesque and atmospheric. The beautiful facades of the narrow houses with their front terraces bear animal motifs along the whole length of the street on both sides. The animals are actually streetlevel gargoyles, which lead the rainwater onto the street from the drainpipes, and give the street its special ambience. The cellars have been converted into boutiques and galleries. This pedestrian street is always buzzing with activity. At the entrance to the street is Bazylika Mariacka (St. Mary s Basilica, the largest brick Gothic house of worship in Poland, dating from A few key figures about the Basilica: the nave is 105 metres long with a net, stellar and crystal vault roof spreading out almost 30 metres above the floor, supported by 27 columns covering an area of over half a hectare, accommodating over 25,000 people. Inside is a reconstruction of a 12-metre high astronomical clock built in , showing the time, the phases of the moon and the signs of the zodiac. On the left of the main entrance is a staircase leading to the top of the 78-metre-high tower. The tower is open for visits from Mondays to Saturdays, 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., and on Sundays 1.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. The admission fee is PLN 5 for adults and PLN 2.5 for children. Visiting the Basilica between the hours of 9.00 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. costs PLN 4 (normal) and PLN 2 (concessions). Wieża Więzienna i Katownia (The Prison Tower and Torture House) on the Targ Węglowy (Coal Market) tel , , headquarters of the Muzeum Bursztynu (Amber Museum), a branch of the Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Gdańska; opening hours Tuesdays a.m p.m., Wednesday-Saturday a.m p.m., Sundays a.m p.m.; normal admission PLN 10, PLN 5 concessions, PLN 20 family ticket. Free admission on Tuesdays. A complex of rectangular barbicans which is unique in the world, consisting of two Gothic reinforced constructions, the Torture House and the Prison Tower, with a connecting wall. The buildings form a gateway to Długa Street, and were once the entrance to the city. One of the toughest prisons in Europe was located here in The chronicles do not contain a single example of a successful prisoner escape. All of the floors of the Prison Tower were recently converted into the headquarters of the Muzeum Bursztynu. The exhibits show the history of the amber-working craft from ancient to modern times. Visitors can see beds of raw amber, how it is mined, the history of the trade routes, the tradition of using amber for healing, as a magic stone and as the subject of research and artistic creation. Pomnik Poległych Stoczniowców (Monument to the Murdered Shipyard Workers) a monument situated on plac Solidarności commemorating the victims of December The bases of three crosses over 40 metres high are decorated by reliefs showing scenes from the lives of shipyard workers. The crosses were made at the Gdańsk Shipyard from steel provided by the Batory Steelworks. They commemorate the first three shipyard workers to be killed by the People s Militia and the Polish People s Army. Guardhouse No. 1 at Westerplatte ul. Obrońców Westerplatte, tel , west_glowna.htm; open daily from 1 May from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; normal admission PLN 3, concessions PLN 2, free admission on Mondays; bus routes 106 and 158. This is the only military building of the old Army Transit Storehouse at Westerplatte to survive the acts of war in The building measures 7 m by 7 m, constructed from reinforced concrete. It is now a branch of the Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Gdańska. The exhibition recreates the interior of the Guardhouse as it was in September 1939, and presents the combat situation on 1 September, showing documentary photographs, weapons and the equipment of the Polish Army soldiers, souvenirs, photocopies of documents, and a 1:100 scale model of the Schleswig-Holstein tank. Two of the original shells from the tank are exhibited outside the guardhouse. In addition, on the Westerplatte headland is a cemetery where the Polish soldiers who fell in 1939 are buried, the ruins of the barracks and Guardhouse No. 3, and the Monument to the Defenders of the Coast. Park Oliwski on ul. Opata Jacka Rybińskiego, open in summer between 5.00 a.m. and p.m.; botanical garden and conservatory open between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m., free entry. An ideal place to relax surrounded by history. A park has existed here since the 15 th Century, but it took on its current form in the first half of the 18 th Century, based on examples of French horticulture. The most representative part of the garden is the lawn with its box tree hedges, but it is also worth taking a walk down the 100-metre avenue of lime trees, visiting the 18 th Century whispering grotto, acoustic shell-like constructions placed precisely opposite each other (people standing in the grotto with their backs to each other can talk to each other in whispers), the Waldemar Gorlewski/AG greenhouse with its exotic plants, the alpine garden and Botanical Garden. After a walk in the park we recommend taking a look at the 13 th Century Katedra Oliwska (Oliwa Cathedral), the longest church in Poland and one of the longest in the world (the main nave is 107 m long). Inside the cathedral is the famous 18 th Century Oliwa organ. The organ pipes are several storeys high and decorated by angels holding trumpets, trombones and bells. They are set in motion with whirling stars and suns. There is a presentation of the organ once an hour, almost throughout the whole day. Gdynia The second-largest city in the conurbation. Inseparably connected with the sea, the buildings here often refer to parts of ships in shape, and the architecture of the city is called Gdynia modernism. There is acommercial, passenger and naval port. The headquarters of the Gdynia Maritime University and the Polish Naval Academy are also here. Skwer Kościuszki a popular place for walks and visits to the battleships and frigates moored on the coast, including the Polish destroyer ORP Błyskawica and the most famous Polish frigate Dar Pomorza. You can take a boat trip around the Kamil Gozdan/AG Bay of Gdańsk in the Viking II passenger ship, and for lovers of longer walks we recommend the Bulwar Nadmorski promenade, which is approximately 1500 metres long and leads from the city centre beach to Polanka Redłowska. The battleship ORP Błyskawica Muzeum Marynarki Wojennej (Polish Naval Museum), Nabrzeże Pomorskie 1, tel , opening hours: closed Mondays, rest of the week open a.m p.m. and 2.00 p.m p.m.; normal admission fee PLN 8, concessions PLN 4. One of the most beautiful battleships in its class, built in in the UK. Until the start of the Second World War, it served in the Polish Navy. In August 1939, the ship was diverted to the UK, and its crew fought in the North Sea, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the English Channel and in the Bay of Biscay. Apart from the weaponry visible on deck, you can learn all about the traditions of the Polish Navy by visiting inside the ship. Dar Pomorza a Branch of Centralne Muzeum Morskie (Polish Maritime Museum), al. Jana Pawła II, tel , ; opening hours: Tuesday-Sunday a.m p.m., starting 1 July open every day from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; normal admission price PLN 8, concessions PLN 4. Called the White Frigate, it has been R E K L A M A

4 metro.pl euro 2012 connected with Gdynia since It was built in 1909 in Hamburg as a training ship for the German merchant navy. After Germany s defeat in the First World War, the French took over the ship, and in 1929 it was bought by the Pomeranian National Fleet Committee. The frigate was then handed over to the Państwowa Szkoła Morska (State Maritime School) in Gdynia. In the space of its 51 years of service in the Polish Merchant Navy, the Dar Pomorza took 102 training voyages, clocking up over half a million nautical miles Merchant Navy apprentices were trained on board. It was formally withdrawn from service on 4 August The tour starts on the interdeck, and then visitors are taken round the engine room, the sail stores, officers quarters, the deck, kitchens and the forecastle deck. Akwarium Gdyńskie Morskiego Instytutu Rybackiego (Gdynia Aquarium of the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute) al. Jana Pawła II 1, tel , opening hours: every day 9.00 a.m p.m.; normal admission price PLN 24, concessions PLN 16. An extraordinary place to meet the inhabitants of the underwater world. There are over 1600 creatures in the Aquarium s collection, representing approximately 200 species from many different corners of the globe. Amongst the greatest attractions are a coral reef, the giant octopus, sharks, electric eels, the smallest crocodile in the world (the dwarf crocodile), anacondas, piranhas and rays. Sopot The smallest city of the Tricity conurbation. Aseaside holiday resort and spa town, where locomotive diseases, rheumatism, respiratory conditions Rafał Malko/AG (2) The pier The pier and blood circulation are treated. It is also the centre of international song festivals. Following acomplete overhaul costing PLN 74 million, the Opera Leśna will be opened on 28 July. There is also ahorse racing track in Sopot. The pier pl. Zdrojowy 2, tel , normal admission price PLN 7, concessions (children up to 16) PLN 3.50, free admission for children up to 3; entrance to the lighthouse between 9.00 a.m. and p.m.: PLN 5 for a normal ticket, PLN 3 concessions. The pier is the showpiece of the resort, one of the most recognised tourist attractions in Poland and a compulsory point on any Tricity sightseeing agenda. It began its history in 1827 when the first jetty was built. It took its current form in The pier consists of two parts, the wooden part and the landbased part. Visitors can walk along the main pier, which is metres long, of which 458 metres extend out into the Bay of Gdańsk, and also the lower deck and side pier, to which yachts and passenger ships are moored. The land-based part Healing Square is an open area of 20,000 m 2, with a listed monumental fountain, a 39- metre-high lighthouse which serves as a viewing tower, from where you have a beautiful panorama out onto the Tricity and the Bay of Gdańsk, and on a clear day the Hel Peninsula. The concert amphitheatre is also an attraction here, along with a lot of street stalls and souvenir boutiques. A walk along the pier is not only a pleasure, but also good for your health. The concentration of iodine in the part that is furthest out to sea is double that on land. The pier is named after pope John Paul II, who visited it twice during his visit to Poland in It was in Sopot that the famous saying, There is no Solidarity without love, was coined. Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street, nicknamed locally Monciak this is the main pedestrian street of the resort, 635 metres in length, closed to traffic and leading to the pier. Townhouses were erected here at the turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries. During the holiday season it buzzes with life almost around the clock. There are lots of shops, cafes and bars on each side of the street, but there is also a theatre and a cinema. Monciak is an excellent place to come, not only for people visiting Sopot Kamil Gozdan/AG for the first time, but also for those who have not been to the resort for years. It is worth coming back for a visit, as the street has changed beyond recognition. The Haffner Centre was built less than three years ago just next to the pier at the bottom of the street. It is a complex of five buildings: a hotel and connecting spa building, which refers to the architecture of the buildings on the same site before the Second World War, a shopping centre, an office and car park building, and a residential building with a total area of over 50 m2, which has transformed the whole look of the resort. In addition, plac Przyjaciół Sopotu, which surrounds the Haffner Centre, was extended a year ago. An interesting place worthy of note when walking around Sopot is the Krzywy Domek (Crooked House) a house with wonky external walls (there are shops, pubs and restaurants inside). This original building, built in 2003, was inspired by the drawings of Jan Szancer, a graphic artists and illustrator of children s books, who was also a friend and collaborator of children s writer Jan Brzechwa. Three years ago the Village of Joy website crowned it the strangest building in the world. * R E K L A M A

REKLAMA

6 metro.pl euro 2012 Don t leave Poland before you ve tasted it! * Do you want to get to know Poland through its cuisine? Apart from the schnitzel, immortal bigos, żurek soup and grilled sausages served in every Polish restaurant, we also have more secret delights in our menu. Here s our serving suggestion For people with strong nerves Kaszanka (blood pudding) is a dark purple sausage in a thin skin made from pig s intestines. It is filled with a mixture of buckwheat groats, pork offal and blood. Sounds terrible? But it tastes great! Place a kaszanka on a baking tray, mix with slices of a tart raw apple with onion, raisins (or perhaps prunes, dried apples or even figs), marjoram, salt and pepper. Then put the kaszanka in a hot oven for minutes, sprinkle the onion and fruit mixture over it, pour over a dash of red wine and bake until the apple goes soft, and the skin of the kaszanka becomes crispy. Finally, a sprinkling of fresh parsley and serve... During the Euro 2012 you will be able Jacek Łagowski/AG to try kaszanka at every outdoor barbeque and beer garden. It is usually served with brined cucumbers, Sarepska mustard, and horseradish, but some people serve them with calvados or a bit of chocolate. For more adventurous football fans I recommend czernina, a soup made from duck s blood. In the area around Poznan it is so popular that you can even find it in petrol station bars. I haven t yet been brave enough to try it in such places, though the blood has to be really fresh, and so I recommend czernina in restaurants, at friends houses or in trusted country tourist establishments. To wash it down with Bored with lagers (bottom-fermented beer), which all practically taste the same, experienced beer connoisseurs nowadays choose the long-brewed cloudy beers from the smaller Polish breweries. They first started to appear in the fashionable clubs, but now you can even get them in hypermarkets. Women often prefer those with added flavourings, for example those made by the Olsztyn brewery Kormoran, which also produces Wiśnia w piwie [Cherries in Beer], Śliwka w piwie [Plums in Beer], or Orkiszowe z miodem [Spelt Grain with Honey]. I recommend unpasteurized beers, for example Ciechan from the Ciechan brewery in Lwówek Śląski. The fact that these local Polish breweries are flourishing during the economic crisis is a testament to their quality. The little Namysłów brewery, which has a tradition reaching back 700 years, saw double-figure growth in If a beer is brewed according to the old recipes, without chemical accelerators, and on a small scale, you can bet they will be worth their price (a halflitre bottle is usually two or three times more expensive that mass-produced beers). And for hangovers? Chłodnik is not only for hangovers, but also the best thing for hot days. This cold vegetable soup made with soured milk or yoghurt is a vitamin bomb armed with protein. Piotr Adamczewski, journalist of the Polish weekly magazine Polityka, traveller and food lover, recommends classic chłodnik with salmon and veal. I cut a large, fresh cucumber, smoked salmon, and cold cooked veal into thin strips, and boil the beetroot until they are soft and the remaining stock is intensively beetrooty. After it has gone cold, I mix the liquid with yoghurt, sour cream and meat stock, add the sliced cucumber, salmon and veal, fresh dill, chives, salt Arkadiusz Ścichocki/AG and pepper, and chill it for a long time, says Adamczewski. My favourite chłodnik is made from botwinka (the leaves and roots of baby beetroots), garlic, low-salt cucumbers (that s also a Polish speciality!) with fresh radishes, dill, and spring onions. I pour cold soured milk or sour cream over the sliced vegetables. You can try this soup wherever you go in Poland. Even the ready-prepared chłodnik you can buy in the dairy section of almost any food store has quite a decent flavour. What for dessert Wuzetka cakes which were a cult in the old communist days take their name from the W-Z urban arterial road in Warsaw (W-Z stands for Wschód- Zachód, East to West). A little cake shop on this road started selling these sweet cakes in the 1940s. They are made from chocolate-flavoured sponge fingers layered with whipped cream and jam and covered with a chocolate fondant. There are also many other typically Polish cakes, including apple cake, cheesecake, poppy seed cake, yeast-based buns, but I recommend the wuzetka, because I have seen foreign guests delighted by them time and time again when the whipped cream leaks out of the chocolate sponge. You can buy it in cake shops and cafes all over Poland, but I think the best can be found in Warsaw. And for the Euro 2012, they will go together excellently with the strawberries, cherries and blackcurrants you will find at any market. Enjoy! Igor Nazaruk Perhaps not very Polish, but tasty TRAFIK (Gdynia, Skwer Kościuszki 10) one of the most interestingly-designed restaurants in Gdynia (the work of the LowBudget group of young Polish architects and designers). It draws you in, not only with its warm interior and pleasant atmosphere, but also its sophisticated menu. It serves mainly European dishes in a very artistic way! TESORO (Sopot, ul. Polna 70) without doubt the most Italian of Italian restaurants in the Tricity. The dishes served here are absolutely authentic and excellently prepared, and there is nowhere quite like it for atmosphere and service. Even Poles sometimes have a problem being understood by the waiters, because they are also authentic Italians. BUDDHA LOUNGE (Gdańsk, ul. Długa 18/21) a restaurant In the very centre of Gdańsk. It started as the best Thai restaurant in the city, but has since expanded its range of dishes to include Indian fare, and is still amongst the best when it comes to flavour and the sheer variety of dishes on offer. Apart from a normal restaurant space, there is also a lounge area with a wide choice of sophisticated cocktails and drinks. All the events that traditionally take place in June, such as theatre and literature festivals, have been moved to other dates. But the people who have been designing the programme of attractions for football fans could not forget about culture completely, especially when it comes to concerts. The largest musical attraction of the Tricity will be the stage in the Gdańsk fan zone, where local bands will be playing every day. Huge worldfamous stars are also due to appear. Rock from the Isles Noel Gallagher, the co-creator of popular Brit-pop band Oasis, will be joining us from the UK. After leaving the group and several months of cooperation with various musicians, the artist has finally built a stable band, got his own material together and begun touring. Although Noel Gallagher s High Flying Birds plays much more traditional rock than Oasis, the front man occasionally returns to his past. During a gig at the Coachella festival in the USA, the English band closed with the Oasis hit Don t Look Back In Anger. We hope they will do the same in Gdańsk. Press sources. An explosive European mixture Fans of hip-hop are sure to be pleased by the fact that Pitbull is to perform. The American rapper of Cuban heritage is slowly breaking his way into the premier league of the genre. He expertly combines more typically popular beats with references to Cuban music and texts about the problem of the Cuban diaspora in the USA. ATB is the pseudonym of a German producer and DJ who for many years has been the most important figure on ATB Press sources the European dance music scene. The artist has tried his talents in various genres of club music, and for a long time the signature sound of his music was guitar samples. These days, he is closest to the aesthetic of trance music. I Blame Cocois in turn a proposal for those who prefer a different style of pop music. The young English artist (privately the daughter of the famous Sting) showed on her debut album that she does not intend to ride on her father s fame. She has created something completely different. This intelligent, original pop makes quite an impression. Those who prefer alternative music will be drawn to the British combo The Vaccines masters of guitar-based anthems with listener-friendly melodies, and choruses which stick in your head from the first time you hear them. Polish music from the sea Young local bands will supplement the gigs of the international stars. They will be performing on three themed stages: rock, Kashubian folk, and sea shanties. The programme includes bands who I Blame Coco Press sources have already made a name for themselves on the local scene and already made records, such as the indie band Gentleman!, and debut bands for whom the gig in the fan zone will be one of their first chances to reach a wider public. * R E K L A M A Nad Po to kiem Re sta u rant Wide offer of exquisite international and Polish cuisine and selected types of wine. 12 12 metro.pl euro 2012 Where to have fun When it comes to dancing, Sopot is the place. For listening to music, Gdynia. For drinking coffee, Gdańsk. Tourists wanting to have a great time by the sea will not be disappointed Przemysław Gulda * Each part of the Tricity offers a different kind of entertainment. The first place you should look for fun, however, is without a doubt Sopot. Bop till you drop Here you ll find the most clubs with the widest variety of types of music and kinds of entertainment. We recommend starting your tour of Sopot s club scene from the centre of town on plac Przyjaciół Sopotu Square. The main street, Bohaterów Monte Cassino, changes into a beachside promenade here, leading straight onto the pier. There are several great clubs on the square, housed in buildings that have sprung up in the last few years. In Versalka there are jazz concerts, but they also play the latest pop hits for dancing to. Next door is Unique, an elegantly-designed disco playing popular club vibes, mainly various kind of dance music. On the other side of the square is a pavilion reminiscent of communist times, where there are several places that throb with music through to the morning hours during the summer season. Almost all of the ground floor is taken up by the Stereo club. Next to it is the Kongo Bar, a new Sopot venue, the decor of which will appeal to surfers. Several metres further on, up Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street, you will reach the Crooked House. Several venues have set up business here, Dominik Sadowski/AG Krzywy Domek (Crooked House), Sopot and it is worth giving them a visit if you feel like dancing. The Dream Club is a large discotheque, styled in 1920s fashion, or the more cosy Zła Kobieta. They all offer a similar vibe mainly pop, disco and euro dance. If you are looking for something a bit more alternative in flavour, you should go downhill in the direction of the sea. On the right is Papryka, a small, detached townhouse which has been transformed into a two-level club. Here you ll find small gigs of niche bands and also dance events, often based on mash-ups, where the DJ mixes two unconnected songs together. On the lefthand side is one of Poland s cult clubs, Sfinks. The artistic cream of the Tricity has had fun here for the last two decades. Nowadays the club has lost a little of its legendary status, but big bashes are still held here, where alternative dance music such as electro and dubstep rule. You also get live music here from time to time. Time out Gdańsk is much more tranquil. If someone wants to find a classic club here, I recommend two: Fahrenheit on the main street Długi Targ, which copies the Sopot club style, with a fashionable interior, pop hits in the repertoire, and Dobry Dźwięk. For alternative scene lovers, on the other hand, I can recommend the Buffet club in the grounds of the Gdańsk Shipyard. The ground floor of the old building of the shipyard workers vocational school trained future shipyard workers for many years, before being transformed into a modern venue, but which still maintains traces of communist times. Dubstep and electro reign here. Apart from these venues, Gdańsk is more a city for places to sit and chat over a cup of coffee (e.g. Tekstylia, Faktotum or Ferber), or drink a quick round before your next party destination (No To Cyk). For music lovers In Gdynia it is much easier to find places for listening to live music rather than dance clubs. It is here that one of the most well-known and active rock clubs in Poland, Ucho, is based, where there are regular gigs by Polish and foreign bands. If you prefer more dance-based entertainment, you should head off to Skwer Kościuszki, where there are several clubs. They are all located around the Multikino multiplex cinema building. The bestknown of these clubs are Elypse and Coco. They have large interiors, a wide selection of cocktails, and fun to be had, mainly to the beat of disco music. On the other side of the square is the Pokład club. It draws you in by its design alone. In accordance with its name (Pokład means deck ), you feel like you are on a real frigate; there are ropes, wooden benches and bits of sails everywhere. Pokład sometimes hosts huge stars of the jazz world, but on an everyday basis it is a club where you can have a great time to the sound of pop music. * SOPOT Versalka, ul. Of course, assuming that you are crazy For would a clear-headed person expect any good from the team ranked lowest among all the Euro 2012 contestants in the FIFA classification? However, we all do hope that this time we will succeed. For several reasons. Lack of communication in the team When the team was composed of Poles only, the ball used to miss the partner by 2 metres and landed out of bounds. Now Polish national team comprises two players born in France Damien Perquis and Ludovic Obraniak and three born in Poland but raised in Germany: Sebastian Boenisch, Eugen Polanski and Adam Matuszczyk. Not all of them speak Polish. Maybe if they don t talk the passes will be more accurate? We are lucky Coach Franciszek Smuda is a lucky chap. Back in 1996 his Widzew Łódź was promoted to the Champions League thanks to a goal scored in the 89th minute against Broendby Copenhagen. In 2008 his Lech Poznań scored against Austria Wien in the extra time added on to extra time, which gave them promotion to the group phase of the UEFA Cup. But Smuda was even more lucky in the group draw for the Euro If that was not enough, Polish goalkeepers last name is Szczęsny which means lucky.
