1 Master of Arts TEACHING (MAT) Graduate PROGRAMS

2 A ttain a master s degree and teacher certification by enrolling in the Master of Arts in Teaching Initial Certification (MAT) program. The MAT program provides you with an opportunity to follow your dream of becoming a high school, middle school, elementary, or early childhood teacher. Whether you are a student who recently earned a bachelor s degree or someone seeking a career change, the MAT is your vehicle to becoming a fully certified educator. The latest in educational theory, technology, teaching strategies, and significant field-based experiences form the cornerstones of the MAT program. Graduate scholarships are available for qualified applicants. Learn more by visiting: The MAT program allows eligible candidates to complete the program and additional course work necessary for content preparation in their chosen certification area. You may also decide to pursue either the English as a Second Language (ESL), Preschool through Grade 3 (P 3), or Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD) endorsements while completing the MAT. The program allows eligible students to complete the master s program and certification by taking up to 12 credits per semester (when scheduling allows) or with approval of an advisor in the following programs: elementary certification and secondary subject-specific certification in English, mathematics, science, and social studies; or kindergarten through twelfth grade in art, Chinese, health and physical education, music, and Spanish. initial certification

3 I learned a multitude of teaching styles through my professors at Monmouth, as well as while working within the classroom setting with teachers from local classrooms in the central New Jersey area as part of my off-campus, hands-on experience. My mentors within the School of Education were extraordinarily helpful in getting me settled at Monmouth and steering me on the correct path in regard to classes. Within a month of graduation in 2012, I received numerous job offers from schools throughout the state. Now, three years into teaching special education in an area high school, I have been nominated as my school s Teacher of the Year. -Zachary Levine, MAT 12 Middlesex County Vocational School District History Teacher 7-12 and Teacher of Students with Disabilities initial MAT endorsements Ü Early Childhood Track (P 3) with Elementary (K 6) Ü Elementary Track (K 6) Ü Elementary Track (K 6) with Endorsement in Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD) Ü Elementary Track (K 6) with Endorsement in English as a Second Language (ESL) Ü Elementary Track (K 6) with Middle School Endorsement (5 8) Subject Specialization in English, mathematics, science, or social studies English, mathematics, or social studies English, mathematics, or social studies with English as a Second Language (ESL) English, mathematics, or social studies with Teacher of Students with Disabilities Endorsement (TSD) Ü Subject Specialization (K 12) in art, Chinese, music, or Spanish Ü Subject Specialization (K 12) Track in Chinese with English as a Second Language (ESL) Ü Subject Specialization (K 12) Track in Spanish with English as a Second Language (ESL) Ü Subject Specialization (K 12) Track in health and physical education For more information, visit

For more information about the MAT admission process, please visit or contact the Graduate Admission Office at Applications are accepted year-round. Graduate student housing is available; learn more at Early Field Experience Matters The School of Education at Monmouth University does not rely solely on the student-teaching full-semester experience to provide our teacher candidates with the opportunity to learn from a pro. From their acceptance into the program, students are given the opportunity to work with a number of experienced mentor teachers through clinical experience in diversified settings. Under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher, the early field experience teacher candidate observes; assists in the classroom in basic instructional roles such as tutoring, mentoring, and teaching lessons to individuals, pairs, and groups of students, and instructs individual students and small groups as well as the entire class of students. Candidates are placed in surrounding school districts and must be available during the days and times that schools are in session. placements
