4 IPSF NEWSLETTER Introducing Student Exchange Committee Melissa Teo Born in Malaysia, currently residing in Australia Graduated in 2007, currently a registered pharmacist residing in Australia Absolutely love the work SEC does for SEP! Great way to continue SEO duties and get more involved with IPSF. At the end of my term as SEO, I was looking at ways to continue my contributions to SEP and IPSF. SEC was the next step and I am thankful I took that step! It has been a great experience working with the numerous experienced SEC members! SEO of NAPSA, Australia SEC member since 2008 Now Chairperson of Student Exchange Why get involved in SEC? Because it s great! The Student Exchange Programme was what introduced me to IPSF, and I still love it the most out of all fields! Meeting people from all around the world, travelling, improving my professional skills while having lots of fun - this is why I love mobility. It is a great honour to be part of a program that is nearly as old as the Federation herself, and is without question the flagship project. Let s keep it that way, let s SEP! SEP organizer in Summer 2007 SEP in July 2008 SEO for HuPSA Hungary Student Exchange Committee member Chairperson of Student Exchange Bálint Tóth Hungary 4th year out of 5
5 IPSF NEWSLETTER Introducing Student Exchange Committee What can I say after all those years spent in SEC? It seems that IPSF spirit will never let me go :) Work in SEC gives me an excellent opportunity to help development of SEP. It is a great feeling when you know that together with SEC-mates you can make SEP better. Also, helping other SEOs in solving problems they faced during the term makes you feel real good. And friendships you can make working in SEC are very important. I met so many great people and we became good friends. It is a real wealth! Slaviša Stojković Serbia Graduated Exchange student in 2006 SEO for NAPSer Serbia 2006/07 and 2007/08 SEC member since 2007 Once the IPSF-fever got you, you can never let go again ; ) I started as a SEO, all the experiences I made were so wonderful as well as the friendships that developed during that period, and it is great to see that I still can help students to explore pharmacy from a different country. SEO for BPhD Germany from 2006 to 2007 Since 2007 involved in SEC Kerstin Heyder Germany Graduated Ilse Bollen The Netherlands 3rd Year My term as SEO ended in May but I wanted to stay involved in SEP because it s such a great programme! I can still contribute to SEP as a SEC member. I like to have contact with people from different countries. I hope I can share my experience in order to help SEOs. SEO of K.N.P.S.V. Since this is my last year of studies, I was looking for something that will give me an opportunity to continue my work in IPSF and then I found out through a friend about SEC. I have always enjoyed all the SEO work so I was really happy when this opportunity came up. I m hoping for another great SEP and SEC year. LEO for NAPSer Serbia from Currently I m a NAPSer SEO First year in SEC I love SEP since I was first involved as local exchange committee. Being a SEO last term and also experienced my first SEP to Japan, in both good and hard times, sure gave me an unforgettable experience : ). 7 IPSF NEWSLETTER Introducing Student Exchange Committee Anzhelika Makinyan Armenia SEP is a very interesting program and it was the first thing I knew about IPSF. I really enjoyed the experience as LEO & SEO and also as a SEP participant. After knowing both ways the expectations and the responsibilities I know I can give a hand to others. This is also a great way to discover some of your abilities. Being part of the Committee is definitely a way of knowing IPSF and worldwide people. : ) 1st out of 2 of Master Degree IPSF has been one of the loveliest parts of my life since 2008 when I had my first SEP in Hungary. I understood that IPSF is an organization which gives us great chance not only to get experience in the different fields of pharmacy but also meet new friends and have a lot of fun. I wanted to do something more for IPSF and especially for SEP and to have my own contribution to them. That s why I decided to apply for SEC, share my experience with the SEOs and other members of IPSF and enjoy this wonderful term with the other members of SEC! SEO of ArmPSA Armenia from 2008-until present LS from 2009-until present Member of SEC from 2010 SEP background: LEO for Cluj-Napoca SEO for Romania Member of SEC since 2010 For SEP, once you are in, there is no way out! It s been 5 years since my first year as SEO and I was only 18. I had the time of my life with my first exchange students so I went on. My excitement and never ending enthusiasm multiplied each and every year, so here I am! After all, I developed tolerance to highly addictive SEP and I needed higher dose of it which is SEC : ) SEP is a unique program which provides you with the whole package of professional development, meeting surprising cultures, making everlasting friendships and unforgettable memories. That s why, I can never consider quitting. T. Mert Serim Turkey Graduated in 2008, research assistant and MSc student in Pharmaceutical Technology Department. 8 IPSF NEWSLETTER A piece of Music from INDIA 6 Ang Ju Ying was one of the SEP Grant receivers in 2010 SEP Experiences There was a lucky star, shining on me and leading me to the special land, India. During the Student Exchange Program (SEP) organized by International Pharmaceutical Student s Federation (IPSF), I had one month attachment in Hindu Pharmacy, a famous community pharmacy in Goa, the smallest state of India. This pharmacy was founded in year 1911, and it will be celebrating its 100th year anniversary next year! Mr. Raj is the chief pharmacist here. There are an other four registered pharmacists working in this pharmacy. The main difference between Hindu Pharmacy and Malaysian ones is that the Indian one shows equal emphasis on allopathic, ayurvedic and homeopathic system, as these 3 systems are the main systems being practiced in India. On the other hand, Malaysian pharmacies usually give more emphasis on allopathic system. Being attached with this pharmacy, I get to learn about the Good Pharmacy Practice in the scope of community pharmacy and also the importance of patient-oriented services provided by the community pharmacy. I learnt that pharmacy is a highly regarded profession if we ourselves take the initiative to make a difference and serve the community. This has increased my confidence in the future where I will be serving the community with my enthusiasm and professional knowledge. This journey is a mixture of bitter and sweet, just like we have scatenato and legato in a piece of music. I can t tell you which part is the most interesting or most precious to me, because it comes in a package and I accepted it in a parcel by heart. Deepest thanks to IPSF for granting me this chance to explore the beautiful land and nourish my soul with the valuable experience. Thank you! Ang Ju Ying, Malaysia 2010
9 Practice report from IPSF NEWSLETTER S l o v a k i a This summer I participated in the Student Exchange Programme organized by the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation. I lived and worked in Bratislava for practically three weeks during the period of time from 6th July to 24th July. Work experience abroad enabled me to consolidate and extend my knowledge. Moreover, the project gave me an exceptional chance to get acquainted with the country where culture and way of life are totally different from that what were usual for me. Participation in the project gave me an opportunity to improve my English skills. During my stay in Bratislava I was working at the community pharmacy called Mandragora. The pharmacy was located in the same building as a medical center. It was a rather big private pharmacy. The pharmacists working at Mandragora collaborated closely with doctors from medical centre specializing in different areas. The pharmacy dealt with the preparation of medicines as well. The owner of the pharmacy was my supervisor during the practice. She was giving me different tasks and watching how I coped with them. A girl who studied pharmacy in Bratislava was undergoing practice at this pharmacy at the same time with me. I am very glad I have managed to go for practice to Europe. I am very grateful I was given this unique opportunity. I consider this experience was extremely useful for me. On my opinion, it was an excellent way to gain work experience and broaden professional outlook. In addition, this project helped me to improve my English and practice my conversational skills. Moreover, it was very interesting for me to get acquainted with the new country and people living there, their culture and customs. It was unforgettable experience of my life. SEP Experiences Liidia Smirnova was one of the SEP Grant receivers in 2010 Liidia Smirnova, Estonia
10 SEP Database At the 56th IPSF World Congress in Slovenia 2010, the General Assembly has approved the commissioning of a website development company to recreate a new SEP database. This website development company is Webtown from Hungary. Webtown has years of experience in creating user-friendly and easily manageable databases and IPSF is very lucky to have utilised their services. The new SEP database is close to ready and will be launched at the end of November or early December. Members of SEC and I are in the midst of trouble-shooting the database to iron out all possible errors and kinks. Once it is launched, all SEOs will be notified immediately and students can then begin submitting their application. Here are some snapshots of the database: IPSF NEWSLETTER Thank you all for being patient while we are in the midst of launching the new database! Cheers, Melissa Teo Chairperson of Student Exchange
