They brought together 14 scholars from 5 countries and 10 universities. Synopsis The first annual Koç ARHA Graduate symposium aimed to challenge the boundaries of current scholarship. With a focus on Anatolian cities throughout the ages, the symposium brought together graduate student speakers from around the world to share their current research and engage in cross-disciplinary discussions. Scholars were presented with the following prompt: As the majority of the world s population now lives in cities, studies relating to cities are a common ground which can bring scholars together. However, many scholarly approaches to the study of cities can be quite narrow and divided in terms of periodization, geography and methodology. This 27

28 symposium suggests that a wider focus on the study of cities can work to diffuse the boundaries between departments, universities, and even countries and foster a multi-disciplinary approach to research. On April 27th ARHA Students welcomed speakers from five different countries and ten different universities. The topics ranged from the relationship of Hellenistic sanctuaries and cities, Byzantine urban monastic culture, various periods of Ottoman municipal development and the preservation of historic sites within cities. Together these papers create engaging dialogues that raise many interesting points about the urban dynamics of various periods in Anatolia. The keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Çiğdem Kafesçioğlu from Boğaziçi University. Her talk was titled Lineaments of an Early Modern Urban Image: Cartography, chorography, and narrative in Ottoman representations of Istanbul. The papers presented in the symposium The extra-urban Sanctuary and City: Claros, a Sanctuary with two Cities, Gülşah Günata, Koç University. Private Benefaction in the Greek Cities of Asia Minor: Re-Urbanization under the Roman Rule, Aygün Kalınbayrak Ercan, Middle East Technical University.
