QUICK HITS Binghamton aims for its first conference win when it faces the America East foe it s had the most success against in BU s 15-year Division I tenure (17-12). The Bearcats have been hit hard by injuries. Junior guard Yosef Yacob (23 min. per game last year) was lost for the year in preseason. Starting sophomore guard Romello Walker (8.6 ppg. last year) had the same injury as Yacob and was lost for the season after playing just seven games. The team s lone senior, guard Karon Waller (67 career games) has been shut down for the season with injuries, leaving BU with four healthy guards. Binghamton s current rotation features no seniors and just two juniors. The team s underclassmen account for 82% of the minutes and 83% of the scoring. Of the team s eight players averaging double-digit minutes, seven are underclassmen. The 11 underclassmen gives BU the eighth-highest underclassmen percentage in the country (73.3%). LAST TIME OUT In the conference opener on Wednesday, BU pushed AE favorite Stony Brook to the closing minutes in a loss. The Seawolves closed out the game with a decisive 17-7 run. BU outrebounded the AE leader and kept USB 14 points under its season average but hit just 3-of-18 three-pointers on the offensive end. Sophomore center Bobby Ahearn tied his career high with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman guard Everson Davis tallied 12 points the 10th time he s reached double digits in 14 collegiate games. The teams tightened their rotations and combined for just three bench points. NEXT UP Binghamton hosts Hartford on Wednesday. Increase BU s lead in the all-time series to (9-5 at Lundholm). ABOUT UNH The Wildcats enter conference play at 7-6 but have dropped four of their last six games. UNH returns four starters and nine lettermen from a team that finished fourth in the AE (11-5) and lost to Albany by a bucket in the semis. Reigning AE Rookie of the Year Tanner Leissner leads the team in scoring (14.1 ppg.) and is second in rebounding (6.3 rpg.). The Wildcats are putting 72 points on the board per game and rank second in the AE in rebounding (38.6/game). ALL-TIME SERIES VS. UNH Binghamton leads the series it s best mark vs. any team in the America East. UNH has won two straight and seven of the last nine however. The Wildcats swept the season series last year, winning in Vestal and then in Durham one month later. Binghamton swept the season series in DAVIS MAKING IMPACT DURING FRESHMAN SEASON Freshman guard Everson Davis (11.1 ppg.) has been a key contributor in his first collegiate season. Davis ranks fourth among freshmen scorers in the AE. Davis has scored in double figures 10 times in 14 games. He is logging 31.4 minutes per game. Davis earned America East Rookie of the Week honors on Dec. 22. DEMPSEY MOVING NEEDLE ON REBUILD PROJECT HC Tommy Dempsey enters his fourth season at the helm His rebuilding climb was steep after program lost 42 of 46 games prior to his arrival in 2012, including 26 straight to start the season. Binghamton won 23 games and reached the NCAAs in before roster and coach upheaval sent the program into a tailspin. Dempsey averaged more than 18 wins a season as HC at Rider and produced 2008 NBA Lottery pick Jason Thompson. Dempsey s Bearcats had their best conference finish in five years last winter and his team was picked to finish in the middle of the pack (5th of 9) this season. STILL A YOUNG TEAM Binghamton had the youngest team in the nation last season (Statsheet. com) and still has 11 underclassmen (out of 15) on the roster. The Bearcats were the only team in the country whose top three scorers were all freshmen (Rodriguez, Perovic, Walker). All five starters return this season (sophomores Rodriguez, Walker, Mc- Fadden, Ahearn and junior Beck). The roster features no seniors and two healthy upperclassmen (Beck, Rinaldi). 2

Rodriguez logged more minutes per game (31.6) than all but three freshmen across the country. Rodriguez twice earned America East Rookie of the Week honors (Dec. 29 and March 1). Rodriguez ranked second in the America East with three double-doubles and finished among the top-10 in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals SUPER SOPHOMORE CLASS Binghamton s five sophomores averaged 25 minutes per game as freshmen and that class produced four of the team s top six scorers (Rodriguez, Perovic, Walker, McFadden) Rodriguez, Walker and Perovic combined to garner four America East Rookie of the Week honors last season. Sophomore center Bobby Ahearn stepped in for the injured Perovic in January and led the team in field goal percentage (52%). Ahearn averaged 6.9 points and 5.1 rebounds in conference play In the last two years, BU s freshman class has received seven weekly honors the most of any team in the America East PEROVIC BACK FROM INJURY Six-foot-9 center Dusan Perovic has returned to the lineup to start the season after his promising freshman season was cut short with a knee injury in late December. Perovic averaged 11.5 points and hit 24-of-53 three-pointers (team-best 45%) in 15 games. He broke BU s single-game scoring record with 34 points at Boston Univ. on Dec. 3. In that game, he hit 11-of-18 shots, including 6-of-8 three-pointers. He scored 29 points in the second half. SHARP-SHOOTING SCHURMAN BEGINS COLLEGIATE CAREER After red-shirting his first year at Binghamton, John Schurman begins his collegiate career in Schurman scored 1,541 points up the road at Fayetteville-Manlius High School and was a Class AA all-state selection as a junior. He averaged 22.5 points as a senior. Schurman is considered to be the best perimeter shooter in the program. BINGHAMTON ON ESPN PLATFORMS Sat. 4 BRUCE BRINGS PEDIGREE FROM DeMATHA Freshman Thomas Bruce knows a thing or two about big games and winning programs. The 6-foot-9 center played at DeMatha Catholic, one of the most successful scholastic programs in the country. Bruce helped DeMatha win 33 games last season the fourth-highest win total in school history He led the team in rebounding with 9.8 per contest and was named to the All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. His signature game was a 16-point, 12-rebound showing against Roselle Catholic, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country (USA Today). Bruce averaged 12.3 points and 11.0 rebounds against nationally Top-25 teams. SHOW SHOWS UP FROM BUCKNELL Sophomore guard J.C. Show (rhymes with how) arrives in Binghamton after playing his freshman season at Bucknell. He will sit out the campaign before having three remaining seasons of eligibility with the Bearcats. Show played 18.3 minutes per game for a Bison team that won 19 games and reached the NIT. He played in all 34 games, averaging 6.7 points (season-high 23 points vs. Siena). Show was named Pennsylvania Mr. Basketball and 2014 Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior at Abington Heights High School in nearby Scranton, Pa. He was a three-time all-state guard and three-time captain who averaged 17.7 points and 4.6 assists as a senior. He played AAU ball with current BU Scranton-area teammates John Rinaldi and Timmy Rose. BEARCATS PICKED FIFTH IN PRE-SEASON POLLS America East coaches picked BU to finish fifth in the Preseason Poll. Binghamton received 32 points, behind Stony Brook (63), Albany (55), Vermont (49) and New Hampshire (47). Binghamton was also picked fifth by Sporting News, Athlon and Lindy s publications Last year BU was also picked to finish fifth and after losing three starters by the time conference play began, the Bearcats finished seventh out of nine (#6 seed for tourney). BU HEADS TO MICHIGAN FOR TWO-GAME SWING BU will face reigning Final Four team Michigan State on Dec. 5 (ESPNU at noon) in the first of back-to-back games in the Great Lake State. The Spartans are ranked No. 13 in this week s USA Today and AP Top 25 polls. It will be BU s first game against Michigan State and third-ever against a Big Ten team. The previous two games were against Michigan. Two days after the game in East Lansing, the Bearcats will face another first-time opponent in Horizon League member Oakland University 16-GAME AMERICA EAST SLATE BEGINS ON JAN. 6 Binghamton will play its traditional conference schedule with home-and-home dates against each of the other eight America East opponents. All eight eligible teams (all except UMass Lowell) advance to the conference tournament, which begins with the topfour seeds hosting quarterfinal games on March 2. Semifinals are on March 7 and the championship game is on March 12 (ESPN2). BINGHAMTON WILL APPEAR ON ESPN PLATFORMS MINIMUM OF FOUR TIMES BU will appear on ESPNU for the first time ever when it faces Michigan State on Dec. 5. The Bearcats will host conference rivals Stony Brook (Jan. 6 on ESPN3) and Albany (Feb. 8 on ESPN3) and also will appear on ESPN3 at Horizon League foe Oakland (Dec. 7), fellow SUNY Center Buffalo (Dec. 12) and also for the America East quarterfinals. CAN BAI ME LOVE In October BU announced the single-largest gift in athletics history when local physician Dr. Bai Lee gave $1 million to the department. The basketball court at the Events Center was formally dedicated as the Dr. Bai Lee Court in a pregame ceremony on Nov. 15 Binghamton has led the America East in home attendance in 10 of the last 12 years. 4

5 NOTED ALUMNI WITH SPORTS TIES Among the university s noted sports-centered alumni are Tony Kornheiser 70, co-host of ESPN s PTI, and former wrestler and current Hollywood actor, writer and producer Billy Baldwin 85. ESPN Baseball Tonight anchor Karl Ravech received his master s degree from Binghamton in Other notable alumni include Scott Krug 96, CFO of the New York Yankees, Marc Lawrence 81, Hollywood writer, director and producer, Paul Reiser 77, star of the popular TV sitcom Mad About You and Stephanie Courtney 92, actress and Flo from Progressive Insurance commercials Lawrence s 2014 The Rewrite movie, starring Hugh Grant, was a tribute to Binghamton University and the plot had the Grant character teaching at a small upstate college. DID YOU KNOW? Junior guard Marlon Beck is a former track middle-distance runner who has run a 5:11 mile. Beck is the annual winner of BU s preseason conditioning mile race. Junior guard Yosef Yacob knows sign language in order to communicate with his brother. Sophomore forward Bobby Ahearn s uncle (mother s brother) is former San Antonio Spurs player and NBA coach Vinny Del Negro. His grandfather, Vince, played basketball at the Kentucky under legendary coach Adolph Rupp. Bearcat sophomores Dusan Perovic and Romello Walker played together at South Kent School and signed their NLIs together to commit to Binghamton. Four BU players (Ahearn, Perovic, Rodriguez, Walker) played in the same conference before coming to Binghamton (New England Prep School Athletic Council). Redshirt freshman walk-on Jordan McRae has two notable family ties to professional sports. His father, Conrad, played at Syracuse and professionally in Europe, earning the nickname McNasty for his shot-blocking and dunks crafted during teenage years on Brooklyn playgrounds. Jordan s stepfather, Shaun Ellis, is a former first-round draft pick for the New York Jets who played 12 seasons in the NFL. Sophomore Justin McFadden played at the same high school that produced Kobe Bryant (Lower Merion outside Philadelphia). Sophomore center Dusan Perovic is from Montenegro, a country in Southeast Europe that sits alongside the Adriatic Sea. Perovic is from Podgorica, the capital and largest city. Freshman guard Everson Davis was born in St. Kitts, an island country in the West Indies. The west side of the island borders the Caribbean Sea, and the eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean. He also spent time as a youngster on the island of St. Croix before his family moved to New Jersey for his ninth grade year. Sophomore forward Willie Rodriguez scored 2,018 career points for East River High School in Orlando, Fla. Head Coach Tommy Dempsey has been voted Coach of the Year four times in 13 years of collegiate coaching. Binghamton has only been a Division I program for 14 years (since ), when the school made the decision to elevate its athletics program, joining fellow State University of New York Centers Buffalo, Stony Brook and Albany. 5

6 Head Coach Tommy Dempsey Rapidly turning the corner with a resurging Binghamton s men s basketball program, head coach Tommy Dempsey begins his fourth season at the helm in A strong recruiter with personal integrity and family values, Dempsey has engineered success at every stop during his 18-year professional career. In 13 years as a college head coach Dempsey has amassed 223 wins for an average of more than 17 wins per season. In short order at Binghamton, Dempsey has recruited and developed a core of talented young players who are poised to lift the Bearcats into the upper echelon of the America East Conference. Last season, Dempsey s Bearcats produced the program s highest conference win total in five years, despite fielding the nation s youngest lineup. Binghamton was the only team in the nation whose top three scorers were all freshmen. In the last two years, BU has seen seven different players earn conference Rookie of the Week honors - an America East record during a two-year span - and further testament to Dempsey s youth movement. In , Dempsey s young team featured four talented freshmen, led by point guards Marlon Beck and Yosef Yacob. Binghamton became the first school in league history to produce four different America East Rookie of the Week honorees. Dempsey was announced as Binghamton s new head coach on May 24, 2012 and it was widely considered a coup for the school to land a proven Division I head coach after struggling through a two-win season. Dempsey came to BU after a successful seven-year tenure at Rider University (N.J.), that included 119 wins, a MAAC Championship, three trips to national post season tournaments, and an NBA lottery pick in Equally important, Dempsey s student-athletes continue to demonstrate a proven track record of academic accomplishment under his leadership. His Rider program received the NCAA Public Recognition Award four times in his last five years for having an APR score in the top 10 percent in the country, including three perfect scores. 7 Dempsey was named the 2008 MAAC Coach of the Year and also was presented with the Peter A. Carlesimo Award as the Division I Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Coach of the Year. Dempsey s Broncs won 82 games in a four year span ( ), the most in any four-year span in Rider school history. During that span the Rider program collected wins against teams from the Big 10 (Penn St.), Big East (Rutgers), SEC (Mississippi St.) and Pac 12 (USC). Prior to taking the reins at Rider, Dempsey was an assistant coach with the Broncs from His tenure as an assistant helped head coach Don Harnum to a regular-season MAAC title in 2005 and first ever trip for the Broncs to the MAAC Tournament Champioship game. After serving as an interim head coach in , Dempsey, the thirdyoungest Division I head coach in the country at the time, doubled the team s win total in his first full year as head coach in His 16-win Broncs team reached the MAAC quarterfinals and was the only team (out of eight) in New Jersey to post a winning record. Prior to his time at Rider, Dempsey took two different schools to the NJCAA Final Four, including a trip to the national championship game in In three years as head coach at the junior college level, he compiled an overall record, including a perfect 46-0 mark at home. He was twice a finalist for National Coach of the Year honors. At Lackawanna College, Dempsey took his team to the Division II national championship game in 2003 and was the Region 19 and District 9 Coach of the Year. He inherited a team that wasn t in the preseason top 40 and finished national runnerup with a school-record 33 wins (33-4). Dempsey spent two seasons at Keystone College and compiled a 55-8 record. After inheriting an team, Dempsey led the squad to 26 wins and a conference title in his first season, earning Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. In , Keystone won a school-record 29 games and advanced to the NJCAA Final Four and Dempsey was the Region 19 and District 6 Coach of the Year and a finalist for national coach of the year. He began his head coaching career at age 24 at Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School (Pa.) in Before that, Dempsey served as an assistant coach under his college coach Frank Marcinek for two years at his alma mater, Susquehanna University ( ).
