4 1 Introduction The Recovery Console (RC) is a tool used to test the integrity of Disaster Recovery backups made with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments, EMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker or CommVault Simpana in conjunction with Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR for Windows and Cristie ABMR, NBMR or TBMR for Linux systems. It does this by running an automated restore of the backup to a supported Hypervisor environment (VMware vsphere, vcloud, Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft Azure, IBM TSM for VE and IBM SoftLayer). If the backup is restored with no errors then it is considered 'good'. Refer to the Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR User Guides for a detailed discussion of each Cristie product. The supplied RC setup program must be installed on a Windows host machine. A server version of Windows is recommended. A typical RC setup sequence consists of the following steps. 1. Download the software 2. Install, license and configure the Recovery Console software on a suitable host machine. 3. Obtain and add simulation tok ens 4. For Windows systems, ensure you have a copy of the Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR WinPE2, WinPE4 or WinPE5 based recovery environment in ISO form available on your selected Hypervisor. No ISO is required for IBM TSM for VE recovery simulations. 5. For Linux systems, ensure you have a copy of the Linux based recovery environment in ISO form available on your selected Hypervisor 6. Schedule a recovery simulation for test Refer to the Readme for late breaking information associated with this release. 1.1 Document conventions The following typographical conventions are used throughout this guide: /etc/passwd represents command-line commands, options, parameters, directory names and filenames Next > used to signify clickable buttons on a GUI dialogue Note: describes something of importance related to the current topic Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Download the software 2 5 Download the software Recovery Console is supplied upon request. Please contact sales@cristie.com in the first instance. After successful evaluation you will then be provided with an FTP download link for the installation package. You may also need to download the Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR suite setups as well if you have not already done so. RC uses the Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR DR environment ISO to boot into the test recovery environment and run the backup recoveries. These products may also be requested from sales@cristie.com in the same fashion if you do not already have them. As an alternative the Recovery Console is also available for download direct from the Cristie Licensing Portal (located at You will be required to use your Cristie Licensing Portal login account to obtain the software from there.
6 3 Installation The Windows setup program allows all components of RC to be selectively installed or uninstalled. This group of components is referred to here as the Recovery Console Suite. This section describes how to install the RC product components on Windows. Refer to the Readme document to see the versions of Windows supported in this release. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Support To support TSM backup recovery RC needs to identify the Nodes and Filespaces available on TSM servers. To achieve this RC requires the following TSM components to be installed before installation: TSM Administrative client command line TSM Back up-archive client IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments Support To support IBM TSM for VE backup recovery RC needs to identify the Nodes and Filespaces available on TSM servers. To achieve this RC requires the following TSM components to be installed before installation: TSM Administrative client command line TSM Back up-archive client TSM VMware vstorage API runtime files EMC NetWorker Support Similarly to support NetWorker backup recovery RC needs to identify the Clients and Datasets available on NetWorker servers. To achieve this RC requires the following NetWorker component to be installed before installation: a compatible NetWork er back up client. What version you use depends upon the version used to mak e the NetWork er back up(s). EMC Avamar Support Similarly to support Avamar backup recovery RC needs to identify the Clients and Backups available on Avamar servers. To achieve this RC requires the following Avamar component to be installed before installation: a compatible Avamar back up client. What version you use depends upon the version used to mak e the Avamar back up(s). CommVault Simpana Support Finally to support Simpana backup recovery RC needs to identify the Clients and Backups available on Simpana servers. To achieve this RC requires the following Simpana component to be installed before installation: a compatible Simpana back up client. What version you use depends upon the version used to mak e the Simpana back up(s). If none of the above pre-requisites are detected then the RC installation will be completely disabled. Refer to the Readme for a list of supported IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments, EMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker and CommVault Simpana clients. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Installation 7 Assuming at least one of the above pre-requisites is installed start the Recovery Console installation by running the suite setup program SetupRCSuite321.exe from the command line or click on the setup program from within Windows Explorer. This will then display the opening dialogue of the installation sequence. 3.1 Install the RC components To install RC components run the suite setup program SetupRCSuite321.exe from the command line or click on the setup program from within Windows Explorer. This will then display the opening dialogue of the installation sequence. Note: RC installation requires that the User login account running the installation has Administrator privilege. Click on Show Quick Start Guide to display a guide describing installation, licensing and basic product usage. Click Show Readme to display product release notes and installation requirements specific to this release. Click on the Install Recovery Console to commence the product installation. The End User License Agreement (EULA) will then be displayed.
8 If you are happy to accept the terms and conditions in the EULA, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and then Next >. Note: You may also print the license if you wish and have a suitable printer available. You may see a pop-up dialogue warning that Cristie BMR product support is activated according to the detected third party backup clients. For example, in the following image Simpana and TSM clients have been detected. Click OK to dismiss the warning dialogue. Note: It is possible to activate/deactivate Cristie BMR product support post installation via the Activate/Deactivate Products option in the Tools main menu. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Installation 9 Then enter the root folder for the RC installation. Use the Change... button to create or choose a different installation folder. Note: Cristie Software Ltd. strongly recommends the default folder location is used. Now select the Cristie product(s) that RC will be used to test with, i.e. any combination of Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR and IBM TSM for VE. A check will be made to see which third party backup product(s) are installed and only the corresponding option(s) will be enabled for selection. Normally only one backup product will be detected so only a single fixed option will be pre-selected. However, if more than one product is detected please choose all the required products from the available list. The Recovery Console service (called RC) account credentials are only required if the standard service account (LocalSystem) is not suitable. For example, you may wish to run the RC service under a domain account. In this case specify the username in the form DOMAIN\Username with the appropriate password. The account selected will be automatically given Logon as a Service right during the installation of Recovery Console. Select Install to commence the installation sequence as shown in the example below.
10 The following dialogue is shown when the installation is complete. Tick Start the Recovery Console console on exit tick-box if you wish to run the Recovery Console immediately after closing the installation dialogue. Finally, select Finish to exit. Note: RC requires certain Windows firewall ports to be opened for correct operation. These will be opened automatically at the end of installation process. At the end of the installation process a shortcut to start RC Desktop. is created on the Windows Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Licensing 4 11 Licensing Once installed the Recovery Console must be activated before it can be used. This requires a contract activation code from Cristie Software Ltd. and must be activated per product (i.e. multiple times if more than one of Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR and TBMR are used). In addition each simulation operation requires a token. A token represents a license from Cristie to perform a simulation operation as described in this document. Tokens are normally pre-paid for by the customer. No free tokens are supplied with the product. Note: A reduced functionality test simulation can be run without the need for license activation or tokens. This feature is called Recover Now. Tokens are product-specific - i.e. Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR. Make sure you purchase the correct version(s). The sequence of events required to setup licensing within RC is summarised in this flow chart: Contact sales@cristie.com to request a copy of Recovery Console. Customer action Install the Recovery Console on a technician machine. Open the Settings->Licensing Settings menu option and note the product signature of this machine. Customer action Contact Cristie Software Ltd. Sales to register the signature of the technician machine and purchase simulation token codes. You will need: the customer Contract Code (Cristie will supply the Contract Code when tokens are first purchased) the hostname/system signature and IP address number of tokens required payment Customer action. Cristie contacts customer with license codes. These are: Contract Code Token Code(s) Cristie action Use the Settings->License Settings menu option to add the 2 Customer action license codes (see example below). You are now ready to start a licensed simulation operation. Example License Settings dialogue:
12 You may use the Cristie Licensing Portal (located at or the Configuration Wizard to automate some of this activity if you prefer. Note: Cristie Software Ltd. may provide contract free trial license code. In this case license contract and activation codes are not required. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Configuration 5 13 Configuration After successfully installing RC it must then be configured correctly. It is suggested this is done in the following order. 1. Configure RC product licensing 2. Configure TSM, Avamar, NetWork er and Simpana server settings 3. Configure VMware vsphere, vcloud, Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft Azure, IBM TSM for VE and IBM SoftLayer settings as required 4. Configure and log settings as required As an alternative you may quickly configure Recovery Console by running the Configuration Wizard from the Tools menu. See the next section. 5.1 Configuration Wizard When Recovery Console is run for the first time a Configuration Wizard is shown. This wizard leads the User through several steps to allow the initial Recovery Console settings to be quickly configured. There are 3 main elements to the initial setup: 1. Configure source back up server - this contains the back up(s) to test 2. Configure target Hypervisor - this is used to contain the restored back up 3. Create a test schedule - this describes which back up to use, when and how often the back up should be restored When complete the initial settings will allow a first time User to quickly start a simulation test. The left-hand section of the wizard (see above) shows the progress of each configuration step. If the wizard is exited before completion all the basic settings entered up to that point are saved so they do not need to be re-entered if the wizard is restarted at some point later. Each step in the wizard is now discussed in more detail. TBMR is used as an example in the discussion. Note each step is mandatory unless otherwise described as optional. All mandatory steps must be completed before a recovery simulation (a schedule) can be run. The Configuration Wizard can be re-run at any time by selecting the Tools option from the main menu bar.
Step 1 - Select Cristie BMR product Each supported Cristie BMR product must be configured separately. So, for example, to configure TBMR when both TSM and NetWorker clients are installed, choose TBMR from the list of detected products. Click Next > to continue to the next step Step 2 - Add product license Add your supplied product license token. If you intend to use a purchased token code here you will need to setup a contract code first. Refer to Licensing settings for a discussion on how to do this. As an alternative you may have been provided with a contract-free trial token. In this case you will not need to setup a contract code first and can enter the code directly. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Configuration 15 Click Apply to check that the code is valid. The wizard will then apply the code and indicate if the code is valid or invalid. If the code is valid the Current Token Count will be refreshed with the correct token count. Click Next > to continue to the next step.
Step 3 - Add TSM server settings Add your TSM server settings. Enter a free-format TSM server name to represent this server, the server IP address, the Admin/BA client communications ports and TSM administrator credentials. Click Next > to apply the server settings. At this point the wizard will attempt to contact the server and retrieve TSM Node information so this could take some time to run. Please close the progress dialogue if you do not wish to wait for the end of this process - it will continue in the background. Any server access problems will be reported by the wizard Step 4 - Select Hypervisor Recovery simulations are targeted to a User's virtual environment; referred to as a Hypervisor. Currently Recovery Console supports VMware vsphere, vcloud, Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft Azure, IBM TSM for VE and IBM SoftLayer. In the example below VMware vsphere is being configured as the target environment. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Configuration 17 Click Next > to proceed to the vsphere wizard configuration screen. Enter a free-format vsphere name to represent this server, the server IP address, server communications port and the vsphere administrator credentials. Click Next > to validate the server settings. If the settings are valid the wizard will retrieve the vsphere configuration so this could take some time to run. Please close the progress dialogue if you do not wish to wait for the end of this process - it will continue in the background. Any server access problems will be reported by the wizard. Other Hypervisor types are configured in a similar manner.
Step 5 - Configure A test report may be optionally sent via at the end of each simulation run. This step allows an server to be configured. This step is optional, but if used the User must provide the identity of the server (via hostname or IP address), the port, an existing 'from' ID and associated password. Please click Test if you wish to try the configured settings and enter a suitable recipient. Click Test Mail to run the test. Click Next > to continue to the next step. Note: This step is optional. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Configuration Step 6 - Schedule name and description This step allows a test simulation schedule to be defined. Enter a free-format name for the test and a list of addresses (separated with commas) to send copies of the simulation test reports. Click Next > to continue to the next step Step 7 - Schedule source This step defines the which backup is to be restored, i.e. the source. The following example shows a TSM Node backup on the TSM server configured in an earlier step.
20 Click Next > to continue to the next step Step 8 - Schedule target This step defines where the backup is to be restored to, i.e. the target. The following example shows the VMware vsphere server configured in an earlier step. Ensure you select the correct vcenter host, NIC, VM/ISO datastores and boot ISO for the test. You may opt to boot the VM or leave it as is after the recovery process. The default behaviour is to delete the VM at the end of the recovery process. Click Next > to continue to the next step. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Configuration Step 9 - Schedule run time and frequency The final step is to define when the newly created schedule is to run and how often. If you wish to run the test shortly after you exit from the wizard select Run once and configure the start time to be a few minutes in the future. Various options are provided to allow the schedule to run daily, monthly or once only. Click Finish to complete the wizard setup. You will then be prompted to supply feedback of your initial experience with Recovery Console. Please feel free to tell us of your experience. Click Yes and an dialogue will be displayed for you to send immediate feedback. At this point a minimum configuration is complete and 1 test schedule is defined to be run.
22 6 Using the console interface Start the RC console from either the desktop shortcut. The main console interface consists of five regions: A menu bar containing Settings, Tools, Help and Exit options A Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR product selection drop-down A count of available tokens A main viewing area containing real-time Status and Schedule information An Event Log region showing real-time activities and test results A typical console layout is shown below: Use the Menu bar to change program-wide settings or view online help, the Schedule tab to configure test simulations and the Status tab to inspect test results. The Available BMR Token Count shows the number of simulation tokens available. Note: you may right-click on all data entry fields to bring up the Cut, Copy, Paste or Select All pop-up menu. For example: Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Using the console interface 23
24 7 Run a Cristie BMR recovery simulation To prepare for a new recovery simulation test, select the Schedules tab then click to create a new test schedule. Make sure you have selected the appropriate Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR option if Recovery Console is activated for more than one Cristie BMR product. For example: RC supports recovery simulations of Windows and Linux backups to a supported Hypervisor. The discussion provided in the following sections consider Windows simulations, but the technique applies equally to Linux simulations. This opens a new dialogue which is divided into Source and Target Details and Schedule Details tabs. The test schedule setup comprises 3 steps: 1. Choose the location of the Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR back up from a pre-defined IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments, EMC Avamar, EMC NetWork er or CommVault Simpana server. 2. Select where the back up should be restored to from a pre-defined VM Hypervisor environment. 3. Define when the first test should start and how frequently the test should be performed. When a test simulation is run the following sequence occurs: 1. A test VM is created in the selected VM environment. This is configured (i.e. CPU count, RAM, disk count etc.) according to the machine definition retrieved from the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments, EMC Avamar, EMC NetWork er or CommVault Simpana back up. 2. RC boots the specified Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR or TBMR WinPE2, WinPE4 or WinPE5 or Linux DR environment. 3. RC runs an unattended DR sequence on the newly created test VM. 4. RC reports success or failure of the recovery sequence 5. At the end of the test the VM is optionally left intact, deleted or booted. If 'boot' is selected then a script can be run when the system boots to mak e further User-defined check s on the 'success' or 'failure' of the test. The next sections describe the unique source/target configuration for each product. Setting up the simulation schedule time and frequency, saving the schedule and advanced configuration are common to each of Cristie ABMR, NBMR, SBMR and TBMR. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Run a Cristie BMR recovery simulation TBMR Click the Schedule button. To create recovery schedules for TSM backups first select TBMR from the Select Product drop-down. This dialogue will not be shown if TBMR is the only Cristie BMR product activated.. The following Create Schedule dialogue is then displayed. First give the test schedule a suitable name and add an optional address to send the results of the simulation test. Then setup the Recovery Details section. Select to do this. Note it is possible to setup several simulation tests together (i.e. a 'batch') using the Recovery Details section. Multiple TBMR simulations can be scheduled to run at the same time and frequency (see the following example):
26 Note it is not possible to create duplicate (i.e. simulations using the same source) simulation tests. The source must be different for each entry. Note: RC can work with TSM filespace or image backups. Backupsets are not supported. Also encrypted backups are not supported Setup test source and target Then in the Source and Target Details tab, identify where the TSM backup is located (i.e. the source) and where it should be recovered (i.e. the target). Select source To define the source click the Source and Target tab and the select a TSM server from the dropdown list. Then choose a Node Name on the server and then enter the Node password. By default the backup restored will be the latest. However if you wish to test a 'point-in-time' recovery instead enter a specific date and time. Select target To identify the target click the Source and Target tab if not already in focus and then select a VM Hypervisor from the drop-down list. Then identify which NIC should be used to connect the VM to the Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
Run a Cristie BMR recovery simulation 27 source. Then select the VM Datastore where the new VM will be created. Select the appropriate ISO Datastore holding the TBMR DR ISO to be used for the test schedule. Then select the required ISO from the Boot ISO drop-down list. This ISO will be booted on the test VM after it has been created. You may upload a new ISO to the selected ISO Datastore by clicking the identify a file/folder containing the ISO for upload. icon. Then Note: it could take some time to upload to the ISO Datastore. Click the Advanced tab to set the configuration of the new VM and configure what happens to the VM at the end of the simulation test. Refer to Advanced configuration in the main User Guide for more information. The new VM will be created on the target with a name of the form RS_TSMServerName_NodeName_ScheduleName. This format cannot be changed.
Setup test schedule time and frequency Now set the Time and Frequency of when and how often the test should be run. Select when the first test should run and the desired test frequency - i.e. Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Once only. 7.3 Save the schedule When the test source, target and time/frequency settings have been defined click the new test definition to the Schedules list. Click Use to add to abandon all the changes made up to this point. to change the settings for an existing Recovery Details entry in the list (highlight the required entry first) or to remove the Recovery Details entry from the inventory. A confirmation dialogue will be displayed to confirm the delete action. Recovery Console Quick Start Guide
