1 MF91 Gaming & IP Services Configuration Guides Introduction The purpose of this document is to walk you through the setup of your MF91 for Gaming or any other usage that requires transparency of data traffic and broad accessibility of any number of services. There are several methods that can be used to do this and each one, from easiest to the most complex approach has their own Pros and Cons. We will outline the main points of each. MF91 Guide #1 - DMZ DMZ stands for Demilitarised Zone and is a term that is used to describe the isolation of a connection or service from all others on the LAN side of the MF91, to open it up to the WAN (Internet side) of the MF91 fully. Basically when you are using the MF91 normally it is protecting you using its Firewall and network security functions to stop external access to your systems on the LAN side of the MF91. But when you configure the DMZ function you are basically making the nominated console or PC open to the world (all TCP / UDP ports forwarding to the PS3) while still protecting all your other systems. Your Console / Game may still report that it is a NAT3 type of connection due to the simple fact that the mobile carrier s network and the MF91 are presenting the Console / Game with multiple layers of NAT (Network Address Translation). MF91 DMZ Configuration Follow the steps below to configure your MF91 and console or PC to use DMZ function. You will need a Computer with a Web Browser to allow you to configure the MF91 using its WebGUI. 1) Power on the MF91 and PS3. Wait for the MF91 to indicate that it is available and / or connected so you can sign into it WebGUI to configure it. The factory default URL for the MF91 is , but you may have changed your device so we leave it to you to get into your own device. 1 P a g e

2 2) You need a fixed IP as the Dynamically allocated IP Addresses (DHCP) that are normally provided by the MF91 could result in the console / PC getting different IP addresses every time you try to play a game and the DMZ function uses only a fixed IP that you configure. Go to the Settings / DHCP Settings menu to check what the reserved IP Address range for the DHCP function is configured as. Then pick an IP Address outside of the displayed DHCP range (DHCP default range is to ) on the MF91. So we will set the PS3 IP Address to which we will use in this guide. 3) Now on the PS3 do the following: i. Select 'SETTINGS' ii. Select 'NETWORK SETTINGS' iii. Select 'INTERNET CONNECTION SETTINGS' iv. Select 'OK' v. Highlight 'Custom' then press right on the D-Pad vi. Highlight 'WIRELESS' then press right on the D-Pad vii. Highlight 'ENTER MANUALLY' then press right on the D-Pad viii. Enter the Wireless Network Name(SSID) EXACTLY as written on your Wireless Security Card, press start once entered then press right on the D- Pad ix. Highlight 'WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK' then press right on the D-Pad x. Enter the Wireless Security Key(WPA) EXACTLY as written on your Wireless Security Card, press start once entered then press right on your D-Pad xi. Secondary DNS: Press right on your D-Pad Highlight 'AUTOMATIC' press right on your D-Pad Highlight 'DO NOT USE' press right on your D-Pad Highlight 'DISABLE' press right on your D-Pad Press 'X' to save You can do the connection test now but don t worry about the results yet as we still have to finish the MF91 configuration. 4) Now on the MF91 you will need to set the IP Address ( ) to be on the DMZ. Do this by going to the Settings / Firewall Settings / DMZ menu and click on the ADD button which will then display a list of all the devices connected to the MF91. 5) Now select the tick box at the end of the line with the PS3 IP Address Then click Apply. 6) Another setting on the MF91 that might help is the Ping from WAN Filter setting. This is so that game clients / servers can Ping your external connection IP. This may not have any real benefit but shouldn t affect your game play. Go to the Settings / Firewall Settings / System Security menu and select Allow on the Ping from WAN Filter line and the click the Apply button. 3 P a g e

4 7) Now switch both the MF91 and the PS3 OFF Then count to 20 and switch the MF91 ON and then 10 seconds later switch ON the PS3. 8) Once the MF91 is ready you can load the PS3 game you wish to play and start looking for a game to join. Additional Information There are a couple of points you should understand and if you think you can improve your connection using this knowledge then give it a try. Firstly during the setting of the IP Addresses on the PS3 you will notice that the DNS settings are nothing to do with the MF91. These DNS server IP Addresses are from Google. They are publically available to use, but they are also located in the USA, which is far away Internet wise. So one thing you can try is to locate some DNS servers that you can access that are local and closer to your carrier network. This will reduce DNS query times and could improve your game server times or resolution. Secondly, consider investing in a external MIMO Antenna. The MF91 has TS-5 External Antenna ports. Most likely you can only get an External Antenna with TS-9 connectors, so then you should contact ZTE Australia about TS-5 to TS-9 Adapters. Using your external antenna, locate the strongest signal and mount the antenna to use that source. This will hopefully provide a stable connection and improve your connection performance. 4 P a g e

5 MF91 Guide #2 Port Forwarding Port Forwarding on the MF91 has some limits that might cause you issues if you are trying to use it for online gaming. The main issue is that you can only set 10 Port Forwarding Rules and none of them can be TCP / UDP port ranges. This limitation is pretty bad for online gaming as you need many ports opened for both your game and any external applications like Ventrilo or Team Speak etc. Port Forwarding for gaming is a bad choice typically then and that is why the DMZ function on the MF91 is so open and the obvious choice when lots of TCP / UDP ports are required. But there are applications where only a few ports are required and Port Forwarding is the best option then. Examples of this might be if you are trying to remote manage a home PC from other connection on the same carrier (this means both connections are behind the carriers firewall and already behind one level of NAT). Another application is for VoIP application support and in keeping with the gaming theme I will use Ventrillo as the client in the following example configuration. 1) Go to the Ventrillo.com website and download the client for your PC. 2) While still on the Ventrillo.com site go to the Setup section and you will see the most important line as far as the MF91 is concerned. This line is the one that outlines the port that Ventrillo needs to work and reads as below. 2) The server's port number. Ventrilo server's and client's default to port number 3784 but if the server admin has changed the port number then you will need to tell the Ventrilo client to use the same port number when connecting to the server. Note that the required port number is: 3784 in the example, but typically this port is not commonly used by paid for Ventrillo servers so you will need to check what port is required for the server you are going to use. 3) Sign into your MF91 and Note the IP Address of your PC on the initial screen (see example below showing that Dean-LP has an IP address of P a g e

6 Note that the IP Address above is a DHCP allocated IP Address and I could have the problem of my PC being given another IP Address the next time it connects to the MF91 which would mean that the Port Forwarding Rule would not work as it is for a set IP Address. To avoid this you should disable DHCP on your PC and pick a IP Address outside of the MF91 DHCP IP Address Pool Range (i.e. Don t use an IP Address between to ). This would require you to manually configure the IP settings on the Wireless network connection on your PC. 4) Now on the MF91 go to the Settings / Firewall Settings / Port Forwarding menu. 5) Click on the Virtual Server drop down box and select Enable. You will now see the following WebGUI page. 6) Now we will enter the required details to create a Port Forwarding Rule. You need to enter the IP address of your PC and the Port number to be used (i.e for my PC and the port will be Next enter the Port that is being forwarded from the external interface of the MF91 (i.e. This will be 3784 again). 7 7) Now click on the Apply button to save the rule and your WebGUI will update and look like the image below. Note that you can manage any rules you set only be Deleting them and then re-creating them. 8) Now switch your MF91 OFF, count to 20 and switch it back ON. This will allow the MF91 to load the Port Forwarding Rules you have created and must be done every time you create or make a change to any rules or Firewall Settings on the MF91. 9) You MF91 will now be Port Forwarding as you have configured it and you can test your Ventrillo connection. Additional Information Port Forwarding allows you more control, but it is very limited on the MF91 in that you can t enter Port Ranges and you can only configure 10 rules total. Also if you are configuring Port Forwarding for gaming use, the ports you need for one game may not be the same as another game requires. So it might mean you would need to re-configure the MF91 Port Forwarding Settings every time you change games. This is one reason DMZ is the preferred option for gaming over Port Forwarding using the MF91. 7 P a g e
