1 'Blogs as promoting instruments of Media Literacy' Celia Quico, Escola do Futuro & PT Escolas team 4th International 'Language, Communication, Culture' Conference Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias November
2 Abstract Educational communities around the world are starting to take advantage of blogs as teaching and learning tools. Portugal is no exception to this rule and, spontaneously, several blogs and blog related initiatives have been launched with the goal to promote alternative ways to teach and to learn, taking advantage of the elementary characteristics of this web tool such as the ease of use in terms of publishing content and adding feed-back to existing content. Blogs can be used as form of extending the class room activities beyond the class room itself, but they can also be utilized in innovative ways by the educational communities. Specifically, this paper aims to discuss the potential of blogs as promoting instruments of Media Literacy, presenting as case study the pilot project which took place since May until June 2006, as a part of Portugal Telecom s educational initiative Escola do Futuro PT (School of the Future PT ). 7 Media Literacy: definitions Sonia Livingstone (2003) notes that the debate remains open over whether media literacy is conceived as primarily protective (providing the skills by which the public can protect or distance itself from the manipulations or harms of the media) or empowering (providing the skills by which the public can maximise the benefits or opportunities of the media) clearly a combination of these is required but the two should not be confused There is a need to go beyond the reception-orientation of the DCMS and Ofcom - the public should have the skills also to produce content because: 1st, a better understanding of professional content results from the experience of production, 2nd, production skills are increasingly important for cultural expression, citizenship participation and for developing a skilled, creative and hi-tech workforce.
