3 The AEP Foundation & Columbus State - AEP Credit Counts The American Electric Power Foundation has funded the AEP Credit Counts program for a 5-year period. It will be located at five local CCS high schools. The focus for each program will be specific to each school. All programs will have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focus. Program elements will include: Middle School STEM exploration, college readiness assessment and tutoring, summer experiences, bridge programs for English and math skills, and dual enrollment courses in high school with Columbus State Community College (CSCC).

6 Whetstone High School s AEP Credits Count Plan Whetstone s emphasis is a career-technical pathway focused on Computer Science. The Whetstone program will include a minimum of four career-technical courses including foundational work in computer concepts, applications, and programming. Courses count directly toward multiple technology programs at Columbus State such as Software Developer, Network Security, Web Developer, & Network Administrator. Students may take additional courses that are required for an Associate Degree at Columbus State. These may include English Composition, American History, Physics, and Introduction to Logic. All courses will be taken at Whetstone High School. Students will have the option of taking additional courses at Columbus State.

7 Whetstone High School s AEP Credits Count Plan Whetstone s emphasis is a career-technical pathway focused on Computer Science. The four career technical courses will be the following: - Year 1 Information Technology: CSCI 1101 Programming: CSCI Year 2 Web Design: CSCI 1145 Basics of Video and Sound: IMM 1500 Additional courses can be taken at CSCC in Computer Science while in high school.

8 How do I apply for Credit Counts? Whetstone s emphasis is a career-technical pathway focused on Computer Science. 1. Make sure that Whetstone HS knows that your child is interested in the Credit Counts program. 2. Whetstone will ensure that students meet application requirements. Whetstone will select the student s that best fit program goals and are academically prepared. (We expect most students that qualify will be accepted.) Current Sophomores, the Class of 2017 are priority. 3. Attend the CSCC Credit Counts Application Day in February. This will be held at Whetstone for approved students of the program. The date is to be determined. 4. In late March we will have a COMPASS test Boot Camp. Students will be required to pass the COMPASS test to qualify for Credit Counts. The COMPASS test is a placement test for Reading, Writing and Math. Passing scores are set by CSCC. Test prep and the COMPASS test will occur at the end of March. Retakes are allowed.

We are actively building bridges for students to overcome barriers to education. The American Electric Power Foundation will assist us to surmount barriers to entering college. Additional Facts College Opportunity Changes for the School Year! *This does NOT apply to AEP Credit Counts! The state of Ohio has made changes to the programs that offer college credits to high school students beginning for the school year. These programs were previously known as PSEO and Dual Enrollment programs. As with most policy changes with the state, we must take a wait and see approach. Guidelines are being finalized and we will update students and parents as soon as we can. Some requirements that are likely include: 1. Attendance to a required meeting that CCS will offer in February and March. 2. Completion of form from the state of Ohio. 3. Application completion and acceptance to the college where the courses will be taken. Thank you for your patience. They can help them earn many college credits! During the school year, Whetstone students received a college credit qualifying score for 72 classes! At OSU s credit hour rate the 216 college credits are valued at $82,512!
