3 Leadership Training for Individuals with Disabilities and Family Members Welcome! Our goal is to provide information on the development of leadership skills in advocating for the improvement of services/systems for people with disabilities and their families in Nebraska and beyond. Do you believe that each person should have the opportunity to lead a self-directed life an enviable life? If this is what you believe, then this training is for you. It is designed for family members, people with disabilities, and other concerned citizens, who have some experience as disability advocates and who are interested in becoming more informed in working to improve the services for people with disabilities. This manual which accompanies this 2 day training is divided into 3 Modules: 1. History, philosophy, and the importance of advocacy. 2. Communication skills for advocates, and 3. Systems of services and approaches to change. Each module is followed by a section of supporting materials. Additionally, there is an Appendix of reference materials and a list of references. Please note that key ideas are highlighted throughout these materials. We wish to thank the advisory group members that provided overall direction to our efforts, the MMI Media Department, as well as, the presenters who will bring this training to you. We hope you find this training helpful in your future advocacy endeavors and that the manual provides reference materials that are useful to you.
4 Leadership Training for Individuals with Disabilities and Family Members Agenda THE VISION MODULE 1 - The History, Philosophy, and Values of the Disability Movement MODULE 2 -Communication & Problem Solving Skills for Advocates DAY 1 WELCOME All people should have the opportunity to lead a selfdirected life..an enviable life. Participants will learn about the history, philosophy and values of the disability movement in the U.S. that have shaped the current system, so that participants will understand the need for continued advocacy. Participants will enhance personal skills for communication, problem solving and self care. EVALUATION MODULE 2 - Communication & Problem Solving Skills for Advocates MODULE 3 Nebraska Services, Disability Advocates and Innovative Practices DAY 2 WELCOME Complete discussion on communication, problem solving, and self-care. Participants will be provided information about systems of services, Medicaid Waivers, current sources of services, disability advocacy groups, the political process, grassroots organizing, and other ways to advocate for positive systems change. At the end of this session participants will write individual plans for systems level advocacy. PERSONAL ADVOCACY PLAN DEVELOPMENT EVALUATION
