The Lady Hornets shot a season-low 15.2% (7-for- 46) in the loss to Syracuse in their last outing (Dec. 22). DSU was 13-for-59 (22%) in its Dec. 2 loss to Long Island. The Lady Hornets were 1-for-18 (6%) from beyond the arc in their Nov. 19 loss to Northeastern. Out of 332 Division I teams, the Lady Hornets rank last in field goal percentage (.295) and 331st in scoring offense (46.2 ppg) as of the Jan. 3 NCAA rankings. In addition, DSU is dead last, 322nd, in assists per-game (7.2). WASHINGTON FIT TO RETURN After missing the last six games due to back troubles, junior forward Brittany Washington is expected to return to action vs. Winston-Salem State. Washington has emerged as one of the top rebounders in the MEAC this season. Washington was third in the MEAC and 60th among Div. I players with a 9.0 rebound per-game average at the time of her injury. She has 63 rebounds in seven games this season after grabbing 54 boards as a sophomore a year ago. The Mitchellville, Md., native pulled down a career-high 14 boards in the Nov. 24 loss to Navy. Washington was also well on her way to a career best for scoring in a season. She has 52 points this season after tallying 63 during the campaign. She had 17 points in the opener against Lincoln and 13 in the Nov. 18 loss to Northeastern. Washington had double-doubles in each of the first two games this season, becoming the first DSU player with back-to-back double-doubles since Najmah Fauntleroy recorded four in a row during the campaign. TWIN DOUBLE-DOUBLES Washington and fellow junior Cortney Crockett doubled their pleasure in DSU s season opening win over Lincoln. Washington recorded her first career double-double in the contest, recording 17 points and 11 rebounds. She was 7-for-11 from the field and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Washington s stat line from the Lincoln contest also included a careerhigh three assists, three steals and one block. Her previous high in rebounds was six vs. Kent State during the season. Crockett also recorded her first career double-double, matching her career-high with 15 points and grabbing a personal-best 11 rebounds vs. Lincoln. She also dished out four assists and had three steals. Her previous top rebound total was four, which she accomplished three times. Washington and Crockett are the first DSU teammates to record double-doubles in the same game since Katreem Palmer (20 points/11 rebounds) and Ronke Adedoyin (12/10) vs. Howard on Feb. 11, STEWART SOLID IN RETURN TO TEAM Alex Stewart (sr. 6-2) has 14 points, eight rebounds, one block and two steals in two games since rejoining the team on Dec. 30. Last season, she averaged 2.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, while leading the team with 24 blocks. In addition, she was 26-for-35 at the free throw line (.743). She leads the team with 10 blocks, ranking seventh in the MEAC at 0.8 blocks per game. Appearing in just her second game of the season, Bowen led the Lady Hornets with a career-high 13 points (4-10 FGs; 5-8 FTs) in the Dec. 5 loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore. Her previous high was 11 vs. St. Augustine s in the season. UMES (Dec. 5). She also tied for the team lead with six rebounds, while adding a block and two steals in the UMES contest. 7 Lady Hornets Basketball Notes LADY HORNETS FALL TO AMERICA S FINEST This season marks the first time that Delaware State has squared off against Army and Navy in the same year. Unfortunately, Lady Hornets were shot down by Army and sunk by Navy in back-to-back games. Delaware State fell to Army in West Point, N.Y., on Nov. 21. The next game, visiting Navy handed the Lady Hornets a loss on Nov. 24. The Lady Hornets are now 1-2 all-time vs. Army and 2-6 vs. Navy. CALIFORNIA NOT GOLDEN FOR LADY HORNETS It was a less than enjoyable trip to California for the Lady Hornets last month, who paid their first visit to the Golden State in eight years. DSU fell to Cal. State-Bakersfield and Dartmouth during the University of Southern California s Women of Troy Classic in Los Angeles on Dec It marked the Lady Hornets second trip to California in team history. The team visited Fresno State during the season. DELAWARE STATE IN THE PINK ZONE Delaware State will again join hundreds of teams throughout the country in the fight against breast cancer. This season s WBCA Pink Zone Contest is set for Feb. 15, 2010 vs. Morgan State in Memorial Hall. The Women s Basketball Coaches Association began the WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event. The WBCA's charity of choice is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation. The WBCA strongly encourages all donations from Pink Zone games to be given to this Fund. The Lady Hornets, donning pink uniforms for the first time, overcame a 16-point second half deficit to defeat MEAC first place North Carolina A&T before a national TV audience (ESPNU) in their 2009 Pink Zone contest. LADY HORNETS IN THE COMMUNITY The Delaware State women s basketball team has been a winner off the court this year. The Lady Hornets traded basketballs for hammers, drills and work gloves to provide much needed help to some Dover area families this fall. The team took part in the First State Resource Conservation and Development Council s Emergency Home Repair Project. In all, the Lady Hornets contributed more than 180 volunteer hours assisting with repairs on the homes of area low-income families. In addition, the Lady Hornets joined hundreds of local residents for 2009 Delaware AIDs Walk through the streets of Dover on October 10. FSRCDC Emergency Home Repair Project 2009 Delaware AIDs Walk
