2 Archives reveal the past, explain the present, and guide the future. They are essential to good administration, to the democratic and legal rights of the citizen, and to a proper understanding of both the past and the present. Scottish National Archives Policy, WHAT ARE ARCHIVES? DÈ THA ANN AN TASGLANNAN? Archives are the records of official bodies, businesses, societies and individuals which have been identified as worthy of permanent preservation. Since they are a unique record of our past, archives need to be preserved in secure, environmentally controlled conditions from where they may be made available to the public for research.
