Retrofit EnerLogic Low-e Window Films Steve DeBusk Global Architectural Technical Services Manager May 18, 2015 ORNL Envelope Stakeholder Workshop
Eastman Overview Eastman Global specialty chemical company. HQ Kingsport TN, approximately 15,000 employees worldwide. Serves customers in over 100 countries $9.5 billion in annual revenues 2014 Energy Star Partner of the Year 2012, 2013, 2014 Awarded American Chemistry Council s Energy-Efficiency Award, 20 Consecutive Years Eastman s Performance Films Division Manufacturer of window films since early 1960 s Largest window film manufacturer and only manufacturer with all capabilities in-house for film manufacturing (sputtering, metalizing, dyeing, coating and laminating, slitting)
EnerLogic What is the technology? EnerLogic the first true low-emissivity (low-e) window film Multiple U.S. Patents issued, others granted and pending First window film with low-e performance (emissivity) comparable to that of low-e windows (EnerLogic emiss=0.07) EnerLogic provides year-round benefits Other films provide summer cooling savings, but EnerLogic Reduces summer cooling costs AND improves window R-value (U-value) for winter heating savings and additional summer cooling savings
EnerLogic How does it function? EnerLogic window film is a thin, transparent polyester film applied to the interior side of windows EnerLogic contains precious-metal coatings that reflect solar heat away in the summer, reducing the need for cooling, lowering cooling costs The same metallic coatings, and other technologies in the film, create a low-e surface facing the building s interior This low-e coating significantly improves the window s insulating performance Single-pane windows become as effective as dual-pane Dual-pane windows become as effective as triple-pane EnerLogic provides these benefits at a fraction of the cost of window replacement
EnerLogic How does it function? Hyatt Regency Houston EnerLogic 35 installed July ,000 square feet of product Energy savings measured by third-party - Green Generation Solutions Measured Savings 23% Cooling Savings 25% Heating Savings 3.6 yr simple payback, after rebate
EnerLogic Summer Performance No film Glass warmed by sun s heat radiating heat into room Hyatt Regency Houston window and room configuration With EnerLogic Warm glass, but with much less heat radiating into room
EnerLogic Summer Performance During the period below, for the Hyatt Regency Houston, EnerLogic provided a 22.4% savings in summer cooling kwh
EnerLogic Winter Performance With EnerLogic Without EnerLogic Window with EnerLogic is substantially cooler on the exterior, demonstrating less of the home s heat being lost through the window
EnerLogic Winter Performance EnerLogic is an excellent reflector of Near-IR heat, reflecting this heat back into the room, preventing 93%+ of this heat from escaping helping to lower heating costs
EnerLogic Winter Performance During the period below, for the Hyatt Regency Houston, EnerLogic provided a 27.8% savings in heating kwh
Benefits and Return on Investment Energy savings Reduced solar heat gain cooling savings Improved window insulating performance heating savings Improved occupant comfort Reduced glare Possible to improve natural daylighting (reduced use of blinds/shades) Reduced run-time of HVAC equipment
Benefits and Return on Investment Energy savings dependent upon many factors Climate Cost of electricity and heating fuel Window/glass type Window to wall ratio Overhangs HVAC type and efficiency Adjacent buildings Thermostat settings and use of setbacks Air-side economizer use Variable or Constant Volume air system
Benefits and Return on Investment EnergyPlus simulations for typical large and small office buildings (1) indicate usually favorable ROI: For most common glass types (2) Warm climate Moderate climate Cold climate 3.57 years 3.07 years 3.15 years Over all climates Single-pane, clear and tinted Dual-pane (3), clear and tinted 2.49 years 4.53 years (1) Large office: 125,000 sqft floor space, 4-floors. Small office: 50,000 sqft floor space, 2 floors, Both Large and Small offices: 33% window to wall ratio, all windows recessed 6-inches from exterior wall national averages used for utility rates ($0.1022/kwh, $1.13/therm) and film installation costs. (2) Single-clear, single-gray, dual-clear, and dual-gray windows (3) Dual-pane DOES NOT include reflective or low-e windows
Market Uptake/Barriers Readily available and in the marketplace since 2011 Used in both commercial and residential applications Most success in North America, but also being used Internationally Main barrier is belief in savings, need for real-world evaluations Houston Hyatt Case Study completed, warm climate/hotel Undergoing GSA Green Proving Ground evaluation for additional real-world, independent testing, large office buildings Two locations: Dallas (warm), Ogden UT (cold) Results mid-2016
