4 6 7 Distance Learning King s College London Dental Institute has pioneered distance learning in dentistry, providing teaching for postgraduate students from many different countries for nearly two decades. The Dental Institute is one of the leading providers of online postgraduate dental education in the world. Our first distance learning programme in Dental Radiology was launched in 1990, giving us over 20 years of experience in delivering postgraduate dental education to students in over 50 countries. Distance learning is the perfect solution if you choose to continue working, but want to further your learning and gain a higher qualification. The content covered during the programme can be implemented immediately in your own practice, which is one of the main benefits to blended learning. Each programme provides the student with a compulsory face-to-face intensive residential course once a year, offering an opportunity for hands-on experience in a traditional teaching environment and the chance to gain interaction with like-minded students and the dental faculty. The face-to-face courses are primarily based in London, with the exception of MSc Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation taking place in India. When I decided to enrol on a master s programme in endodontics there were many options available to me. My priorities were to attend a reputable institution and to be able to continue working in practice whilst studying. The MSc distance learning fitted the bill. The reputation of King s extends internationally and, as such, a degree comes with its own prestige. The Dental Institute is one of the most established teaching and research centres in the country, therefore I am benefitting from the expertise of leaders in their field. Going back to university after working in practice can be a difficult decision to make, both in terms of impact on income and the academic challenges that come with a university degree. The mode of delivery of this programme allows me to fit my studies around my own schedule. 6 10 11 Aesthetic Dentistry MSc Endodontics MSc An innovative programme offering dental practitioners the necessary skills and knowledge to provide high quality functional dental restorations with optimal aesthetic value. Focused on providing dental care where there is a clinical need to restore oral health and function, the programme covers all aspects of aesthetic dentistry. The programme is specifically designed for dentists who treat their patients in a general dental practice environment and seek to gain knowledge and skills for an evidence-based approach to aesthetic treatment. In this rapidly expanding market of aesthetic dentistry, practitioners are finding the need to increase their skill set to better manage patient expectations and to distinguish themselves. Students will explore all aspects of smile design, from non-invasive to full coverage techniques involving a range of aesthetic materials. It includes facial aesthetics as well as all aspects of dental aesthetics. The programme also covers all the restorative aspects applicable to aesthetic dentistry with an emphasis on functional stability, predictability and longevity of the aesthetic outcome. Not generally taught at BDS level, a comprehensive range of treatments are covered, including ethical and marketing issues. Comprehensive diagnosis, treatment planning, prevention, periodontology. Provision of all forms of in-surgery and laboratory constructed restorations. Critical appraisal of literature and database searching techniques. Process analysis including audits, photography, cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry. Minimal intervention techniques and ethical marketing. Restoration of implants in the aesthetic zone. Occlusion, tooth wear and soft and hard tissue surgery. Distance learning allows me to study around my work and family life. The programme enables me to further my education without taking time off and the financial constraints this would involve. I can study anytime, anywhere because I can access the course material from any computer or my iphone. I have an erratic work and family life but can plan my study around this. The advancement of technology means I can sit at home in front of my computer and be involved in lectures with expert tutors in a different country! By working and learning I have been able to improve care to my patients overnight and that has benefited my patients and in turn benefited me. Ahmet Aesthetic Dentistry MSc The programme aims to provide the newest evidence based knowledge in endodontology, to enable the participant to successfully integrate endodontic therapy with the other aspects of restorative dentistry and to learn research methodology. Offered in response to unprecedented global demand for endodontically trained professionals, this unique and comprehensive programme is aimed at dentists who would like to enhance their existing abilities while acquiring advanced and up-to-date skills. This programme will enable students to successfully and confidently manage more complex and demanding endodontic cases. This is a three-year programme leading to an MSc in Endodontics. The curriculum includes the scientific basis of endodontology; diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with complex endodontic problems, clinical treatment of patients with endodontic and other restorative problems. You will also learn research methodology to enable completion of a research project. Includes a variety of clinical skills, anatomy of pulpal dentinal complex and periodontium and research methods. Students review pulpal and periapical inflammation, diagnostic procedures, and operative procedures. By the third year, students cover endodontic retreatment and surgery, restoration of endodontically treated teeth, and complete a research project. The Endodontics MSc programme has given me an opportunity to specialise in endodontics without interrupting my current position at the practice where I work. The support I receive from the teaching team exceeds expectations, therefore I feel comfortable taking on complicated endodontic cases and I accomplish them with successful outcomes. Access to literature resources and support from the library team are excellent, and equipment for practical seminars is state-of-the-art. 7 12 13 Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics MClinDent Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation MSc This comprehensive programme is designed for dental practitioners, working in general practice or a similar clinical environment, to enhance knowledge of fixed and removable prosthodontics. This intensive four-year programme trains general practitioners to perform a high standard of work across a wide range of procedures. It is beneficial for any dentist routinely treating adult patients who need restorative care, and will also appeal to practitioners who seek to develop their skills, learn new techniques and enhance their enjoyment of dentistry. By completing this programme you will develop your clinical skills in restorative dentistry, enabling you to treat a wide variety of patients, referring fewer patients out of your practice. The programme is designed to advance your skills, especially in complex multi-disciplinary dental problems such as tooth wear, complex aesthetics, and occlusal problems. Treatment planning, prevention, minimal intervention techniques, aesthetic dentistry; occlusion/tmd therapies, tooth wear and implants. Students will develop their clinical skills in restorative dentistry and will be able to use advanced skills when replacing missing teeth using fixed and removable prostheses. Students will carry out a number of clinical cases relating to fixed and removable prosthodontics throughout the course of the programme. Into the third year of the programme, I can not help but look back at how evolved I feel. It is amazing to be a part of such an organised and thought through programme in the postgraduate world of dentistry. It is focused education utilising the most innovative, up-to-date teaching methods and resources, combined with every global research advancement in dentistry. I am especially proud to be surrounded by faculty who are opinion leaders, committed, friendly and approachable in every way. This programme has inspired me to become the professional I always wanted to be, and it hasn t finished yet! The flexibility and the company of great scholars has had a profound effect on how I deliver dentistry and balance it out with my personal life. Shubham Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics MClinDent Learn to use cutting-edge digital technology for intra and extra oral prosthetic facial rehabilitation in clinical practice. This programme is for maxillofacial prosthetists, technologists, and prosthodontists working in a hospital environment or similar practice. It will enhance their knowledge and improve their clinical and technical skills. It covers a broad range of treatments for replacement of missing hard and soft tissues, using both traditional and advanced digital technologies. Through optional modules, you will focus your study on prosthodontics, or psychology for maxillofacial prosthetics. The module on the psychological and social support required in facial rehabilitation covers skills in communication, counselling and an appreciation of the psychosocial effects of surgical treatment. The module on prosthetic facial prosthodontics covers comprehensive diagnosis, treatment planning, and management of patients with fixed and removable implants. Students taking this module must be clinically qualified to perform prosthodontic procedures. Students further develop their clinical skills by building a clinical portfolio of four cases, using video graphic material to demonstrate their practical abilities. Students on the psychological module will be required to cover a range of facial prosthetics retained by varying methods, while students taking the prosthodontics module will demonstrate prosthetic or restorative cases. Introduction to advanced prosthodontics, implantology, ocular prosthetics, fixed and removable prosthodontics, treatment planning, prosthesis design. Digital technology, colour science, medical emergencies, cross infection control and care of medically/clinically compromised patients. Biomaterials science, craniofacial implants, silicone elastomers and gels, tissue engineering and bone substitutes, biocompatibility. Students choose between two modules, the psychology of managing terminally ill patients, counselling skills and forming integrated care plans, or intra oral implantology, and advanced fixed and removable prosthodontics. I wanted to learn more about the field of facial prosthetics and this was a great opportunity for me to get an international education whilst living in Norway. The lecturers at King s have a great deal of experience both practically and theoretically. This is very important for me as I can learn about a variety of patient cases. The fact that King s has a solid reputation enforces the quality of the programme. I also like that the course offers updated computer technology education. I think the face-toface part of the course was very rewarding because I got to know the other students and we had a lot of hands on training. I recommend this programme to colleagues because you get an updated education allowing you to treat patients more confidently. Applying online makes applying easier and quicker for you, and means we can receive your application faster and more securely. Application procedure Completed applications (consisting of an online application form, two references, transcripts of previous qualifications and evidence of English Language score where required) will be considered on a first come first served basis according to the date of completion of the application. Early applications are strongly advised. The initial decision will be to confirm the offer of a place, hold your application for further consideration following the official closing date for applications, or to reject the application. You should expect to receive this initial decision within six weeks of the date of submission of the completed application. Applicants who are offered a place will have to provide original documentation of their previous qualifications, and pay a non-refundable deposit, before access to the online virtual learning environment will be given at the start of the course. Applications received after the closing date will be held in reserve on a waiting list, in case there are vacancies or places become available.
