The digital TV channels you get depend on where you live and the quality of your aerial and cables. If you have trouble watching live or recorded digital programmes, it could be because your aerial or cables need replacing. 15 Setting up My BT TV isn t working. What can I do? Make sure: all the cables that you plugged in during set-up are firmly in place your HDMI or SCART cables are fully pushed in your HDTV is set to the correct audio visual (AV) input depending on whether you ve connected to your BT Vision+ box with an HDMI or SCART cable. Some TVs will do this automatically, or you can use the AV or button on your TV remote your BT Vision+ box and TV are turned on your broadband is working Try restarting your BT Home Hub by pressing Restart. Then wait a couple of minutes before restarting your BT Vision+ box by pressing the button on the front of the box until it turns red. Then press the button to restart the box. If you re using Powerline adapters, and you ve still got a problem, you could try restarting these. To find out how to do this, go to bt.com/help/powerline If you ve got Extra TV channels, you should connect your Hub and BT Vision+ box using an Ethernet cable, not Powerline adapters. For more details, see below. Do I have to use my Powerline adapters? No. If your BT Home Hub and BT Vision+ box are close to each other or if you ve ordered Extra TV channels, you shouldn t use Powerline adapters. Simply use an Ethernet cable to connect your Hub to your box. 22 If your BT Home Hub and BT Vision+ box are in different rooms and you haven t ordered Extra TV channels, you can use Powerline adapters. If you didn t order them with your kit, and it s less than 30 days since you ordered your BT TV service, please call and we ll send you some. Can I use an extension lead with a Powerline adapter? Yes, but we recommend that you plug your Powerline adapter directly into a wall socket as it might not work as well when plugged into some extension leads (such as very long or surge-protected leads). You can then plug any extension lead you re using into the Powerline adapter. For more help with Powerline adapters, including resetting instructions or adding new Powerline adapters, go to bt.com/help/powerline How do I connect BT TV using a SCART cable? If you don t have a cable already, you can buy one at most electronics stores or go to bt.com/shop 1 Using your SCART cable, connect your BT Vision+ box s lower SCART socket (marked ) to a SCART socket on your TV. If your TV has more than one socket, use the one marked AV1. If you haven t got a widescreen or HDTV, you ll need to change the setting on your TV and/or BT Vision+ box to 4:3 aspect ratio. You ll get a chance to do this during on-screen set-up later. How do I use my BT remote control to operate my TV? For full instructions on how to do this, see page Digital TV Digital TV channels are delivered through your aerial. They include BT Sport (for customers who can t get it through their broadband connection) and Freeview channels. What do I need to know about digital TV signals? 1 Availability of channels depends on where you live. To check which channels you should be able to receive in your area, go to digitaluk.co.uk 2 Most digital TV-related problems are down to the quality of your aerial or wiring: BT TV won t work with a satellite dish so make sure that you ve a good quality external or loft aerial capable of receiving a digital TV signal and that it s aligned with your local transmitter this should not be a communal or shared aerial a TV set-top aerial is unlikely to be good enough, even with a booster 3 Local geography, like tall trees, hills, or buildings in direct line with your local transmitter, can affect signal strength. 4 Weather low pressure or windy conditions can affect your TV signal even in strong signal areas, especially if the aerial is not securely mounted. Weather can disrupt picture quality, cause pixilation and/or picture freezes. It might even cause missing channels. 5 Transmitter changes can result in changes to channel line-ups and availability. 6 Wiring make sure you re using good quality cables. These are vital to ensure the signal from the aerial reaches your BT Vision+ box with minimum picture loss and interference. If you ve moved home, you might not receive the same channels you did before as signal strength and channel availability depends on where you live. 16 What can I do to get the best digital TV set-up? You can fix many common problems, such as missing channels, poor sound and picture quality, by working through the steps below. 1 Double check your aerial, HDMI or SCART cables are fully pushed in and that you re using good quality cables (especially cables to your aerial). 2 Check your BT Vision+ box and TV are turned on. 3 Make sure your broadband s working. 4 Scan for channels by pressing, then go to Help & Settings > Settings > TV Settings > Scan for Channels and press on Start Scan. 5 Check your aerial is properly in place and aligned with your local transmitter (probably pointing in the same direction as your neighbours ). 6 If you ve got a viewing card for BT Sport, make sure you ve pushed it all the way into the slot with the arrow facing the box and the chip facing upwards. My digital TV channels have distorted sound and pictures. What can I do? You can check your signal strength and quality for each channel. 1 Press then go to Help & Settings > Settings > TV Settings > DTT Signal Strength. 2 Using the and and Channel +/-, highlight the channel with poor picture or sound and note the signal reading for both strength and quality. 24 Each of these will show as red, amber or green depending on whether you need to take any action to improve your viewing experience. A very strong signal can affect picture and sound quality. If your signal is too strong, this will show as red and you may need to buy an attenuator which you can find in most electrical stores. How can I update my channel list? Your BT Vision+ box will automatically scan for channels from time to time. You can also run a complete channel scan yourself by pressing, then go to Help & Settings > Settings > TV Settings > Scan for Channels. I don t have any sound. What can I do? Check the volume on your TV isn t muted. Try another channel to see if sound is missing from all channels. Check all your cables are firmly in place. Try watching an On Demand trailer to see if the sound is working. Restart your BT Vision+ box by holding down on the front of the box until it turns red. Then press to restart the box. If this doesn t help and you re using an HDMI cable to connect your BT Vision+ box and TV, try using a SCART cable instead. Where can I find some more help with digital TV? TSG is our preferred partner for helping fix problems with your aerial system. TSG offers a comprehensive signal assessment service which can help identify technical problems with your aerial system as well as offer professional advice on how best to fix any reception problems. TSG Aerial Engineers can help fix your existing aerial system (aerial, cabling, boosters etc.) and offer a full range of new digital aerial upgrades. (Please note this is a chargeable service.) For more information on aerial improvements and quality, go to aerialupgrade.co.uk or phone TSG on I m getting error messages on screen. What can I do? Select Help and follow any instructions. If these don t fix the problem, call the number given quoting the error code (e.g. VBA103). On Demand With BT TV you can watch TV shows On Demand so you can watch what you want, when you want. Go to bt.com/tvfrombt to find out what s on. If you ve ordered BT TV and BT Broadband at the same time, your line speed can take ten days to stabilise. You might have problems watching On Demand programmes during this period but your line will soon settle down. If you re using Powerline adapters and need some help with On Demand, go to bt.com/help/powerline On Demand is Currently unavailable. What can I do? Leave the On Demand section by pressing on the BT Vision+ box remote control. Re-enter the On Demand section. This makes the BT Vision+ box pull the information back from the BT TV platform again. Try this several times. If you re still having problems, try restarting your equipment by: turning off the power to the BT Home Hub (or disconnecting the power supply) switching off the power socket that the BT Vision+ box power cord s connected to Continued over BT TV help For more help, go to bt.com/help/tv 25 Help bt.com/help/tv

17 Wait for ten seconds and reconnect power to the BT Home Hub, then: allow up to two minutes for the BT Home Hub to restart and reconnect switch on the power socket that the BT Vision+ box power cord s connected to the Starting Please Wait screen should appear. Shortly afterwards the BT TV service should be active I m getting error codes on screen. What can I do? Select Help and follow any instructions. If these don t fix the problem, call the number given quoting the error code (e.g. VBA103). 26 While you re watching or recording channels that use your broadband connection, your broadband speed might be slower for other online activities. See My internet connection seems slower on page 27. Extra TV channels Extra TV channels include those that come with the Entertainment and Unlimited Extra packages, BT Sport (for customers without a viewing card), Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2 and Sky Movies. If you ve ordered one of these channels, you ll be able to watch even more great TV through your broadband connection. Where can I find these channels? You ll find them in your TV guide. Check out the full line up and channel numbers at bt.com/help/extratvchannelslineup How do I know which channels use my broadband connection? Channels that are delivered through your broadband connection are identified by the symbol in the channel and programme information area and on-screen navigation bar. These channels aren t available. What can I do? If you ve only just ordered these channels, you ll need to wait up to 24 hours for them to start working. These channels are delivered through your broadband connection, so you ll need to make sure it s working to watch them. If it isn t, try restarting your equipment. Turn off the power to the BT Home Hub and BT Vision+ box. Wait ten seconds, then reconnect the power to the Hub. Allow up to two minutes for it to restart. Switch on the BT Vision+ box. The Starting Please Wait screen should appear. Shortly afterwards it should be ready to use. If you re still having problems, make sure it s at least 15 minutes after you finished setting up BT TV, then check that your Ethernet cable (yellow ends) is connected properly to both your Hub and BT Vision+ box, and check you re not using Powerline adapters. If you still can t view these channels, go to the Help & Settings menu, choose Settings then CA Network Information and press Force Resynchronisation. Once you ve done this, go to your TV Guide and try viewing one of the channels again. Remember: You can also watch BT Sport online or on the BT Sport App. Go to btsport.com for more. Can I use Powerline adapters with these channels? No. Channels that use your broadband connection don t support Powerline adapters, so you ll need to connect your Hub and BT Vision+ box using an Ethernet cable. My internet connection seems slower when watching these channels. What can I do? Your broadband is shared by everything connected to it (including computers, laptops, smartphones and some TV channels). This means that your internet connection will be a little slower when you re using these channels or other devices. And the more devices using it, the slower it ll go. To speed up your internet connection for your other devices, press the standby button on your set-top box when you re not using it or switch away from channels that use your broadband connection. I m getting error codes on screen. What can I do? Select Help and follow any instructions. If these don t fix the problem, go to bt.com/help/tv or call the number given quoting the error code (e.g. VBA103). Viewing cards Do I need a viewing card? Probably not. You should only need a viewing card if you want BT Sport, but can t get it delivered through your broadband connection. In that case, you should be able to get BT Sport 1 and BT Sport 2 delivered through your aerial in standard definition, but you ll need a viewing card to watch those channels. How do I get started with my viewing card? Make sure your broadband s connected, your BT Vision+ box is turned on and you re not recording anything. Then push your viewing card all the way into the slot with the arrow facing the box and the chip facing upwards. BT TV help For more help, go to bt.com/help/tv 27 Help bt.com/help/tv

We d be delighted to tell you more. Just go to bt.com/inclusion 30 Power-saving modes Your BT Vision+ box has some features to reduce energy consumption. The Power light on the front of your BT Vision+ box shows the current power-saving mode: Power light Blue Full power Purple Standby Red Low power/ Off mode Power-saving mode On and in use, e.g. watching TV. On standby but scheduled recordings and software updates will still apply. To put your BT Vision+ box into standby, press on the remote control or press on the front of your BT Vision+ box. Press either button to switch the unit back on to full power it will take the BT Vision+ box a few seconds to respond. If you ve left your BT Vision+ box on and aren t using it, it goes on standby after four hours. Your BT Vision+ box is effectively off and the BT Vision+ box will not record any programmes. To use low-power mode, press and hold on the front of your BT Vision+ box until the Power light flashes red (about three seconds). To turn it on again, press on your BT Vision+ box (the remote control won t work in this mode). When you press the button, your BT Vision+ box will take a few seconds to begin starting up and will be ready when the Power light is solid blue (this can take about a minute). 20 Tips Your remote control Playback: press and up to five times to fast-forward or go back through the programme more quickly. TV Guide: press or to move up or down through the programme guide, or the Channel +/- button to scroll up or down a page. To skip back or forward a day, press the or. The red button interactive service doesn t yet work with this version of BT TV but you can still watch the extra BBC channels on channel 301 (e.g. for Wimbledon matches on alternate courts). Recording Your BT Vision+ box can record over 80 hours of programmes and will automatically delete older recordings to make space for new ones. To protect a programme from this, highlight the title under Recordings and then press the yellow button on your remote control. Your BT Vision+ box will automatically record programmes even if they start earlier or later than scheduled and if they run later than planned, but a late-running programme can cause a clash if it s still being recorded when two other recordings are due to start. Your BT Vision+ box and BBC iplayer BT TV includes BBC iplayer (with some shows in HD) and BBC iplayer radio. BBC iplayer can be affected if your broadband line s being used for other things at the same time playback might pause or stutter. BBC iplayer in HD is only available if your line s fast enough. The small print Safety information Important information. Read these parts carefully. Your receiver is powered using mains AC via a detachable lead. This equipment has been manufactured to meet the appropriate safety standards, but the instructions below must be followed to operate it safely. These instructions must be kept for future reference. 1 Before connecting the receiver to the mains, check that the mains supply voltage corresponds to the voltage printed on it. If the mains voltage is different, consult your dealer. 2 The receiver has been designed for indoor use only. 3 The receiver doesn t contain any user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open the receiver. All maintenance work must be carried out by qualified personnel. 4 Periodically inspect the mains lead and receiver for damage. Don t use it if you find any damage. Refer to qualified personnel. 5 Unplug the receiver from the mains before lightning storms. 6 To prevent fire or shock hazard, don t expose this equipment to rain or moisture. 7 The receiver should be placed on a firm surface and the ventilation openings must not be covered with items such as newspapers, tablecloths, curtains, etc. 8 Don t install this equipment near any heat sources such as radiators, stoves or other apparatus that produce heat. Protect it from direct sunlight. 9 When installing the receiver, make sure there s a gap of approximately 2cm around it to enable air to circulate freely and help prevent overheating. 10 Leave access to the mains lead in case emergency shutdown is required. 11 Do not place any combustible objects on the receiver (candles, etc.). 12 No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, should be placed on the receiver. It shouldn t be exposed to dripping or splashing. Should this happen, disconnect the receiver from the mains and consult qualified personnel. 13 Make sure that children do not place any foreign objects in any of the openings. 14 For cleaning, use a soft, damp (not wet) cloth. Never use any abrasive cloths and aerosol cleaners. 15 The batteries installed in the remote control should not be exposed to excessive heat, such as direct sunshine or fire. Important electrical information Mains plug and its fuse The supplied mains plug is a non-rewireable type. If you need to replace the fuse, you must use an ASTA- or BSI-approved BS 1362 fuse, rated at 3 Amps. The plug has its fuse beneath a fuse cover on its face. If you need to replace it, use a screwdriver to lever off the fuse cover, replace the fuse with a new one and refit its cover. Never use a plug if its cover is missing. If the supplied mains plug is not suitable for your mains socket-outlet, DO NOT plug it in. Remove its fuse and then cut the plug off the lead. Destroy the severed plug immediately to avoid the shock hazard that would exist if it was plugged into a mains socket. Fit an appropriate mains plug on the lead. If this plug contains a fuse, it should be as described above. If you re using a non-fused plug, an external fuse must not exceed 5 Amps. 32 BT TV help For more help, go to bt.com/help/tv 33 Help bt.com/help/tv
