2 Introduction to Monitor Information Reporting MIR Monitor Information Reporting MIR works with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2012 and SCCM collects significant information; however, it does not provide you with reports about your PC monitor inventory. Besides MIR, there are no other tools available in the current marketplace to easily and accurately determine your PC monitor inventory information. MIR provides you with the tools to run several useful, easy to read SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports to display the information collected by ConfigMgr and so much more. If you need quick answers to the following questions: What monitors are active? How many of a certain type of monitor do we have? What power consumption setting are our monitors using? MIR will provide you with this necessary information at the click of a mouse. MIR s Count reports will give you the ability to drill through to secondary reports for additional detailed information. These secondary List reports will often give you the option to drill through to several other reports, where the final report is about an individual monitor s details. Print reports on standard-sized and legal-sized paper, and export reports to CVS, Excel, PDF, TIFF, Web Archive, and XML file formats. 6 Using Monitor Information Reporting - MIR Minimum Requirements MIR requires.net 2.0 or higher for client applications and.net 4.0 or higher for Site Server setups in order to determine the monitor information for each PC. You may also run MIR on any PC or server to have it display the current monitor information for that PC or server. Install Procedure MIR Install - Site Server Setup To install MIR, double click on the MIR setup MSI. 1) Click Next > to move past the introductory screen. Page 6 of 42

8 3) Choose the installation directory and who can use the application, then click Next. Page 8 of 42

10 5) Import your license key or type in your license key information, then click Next. 6) Click Yes to importing the license key. Page 10 of 42

11 7) Select Create Reports (SQL Server Reporting Services SSRS). By default, Configuration Hardware Inventory to Import MIR Settings and Create Package and Program will already be selected. Click Next. Page 11 of 42

12 8) Ensure the proper information is detected in Reporting Services Connection String and Report Folder, and then click Next. Page 12 of 42

13 9) Once the setup is complete, you can view the log file. Note the log file s location. Click Finish to complete the setup. Page 13 of 42

14 10) Click Close. Once the setup is complete, Configuration Manager will have a package available for deployment to clients. Client Setup Command Lines Command lines are not case sensitive. /Company manually set the company name. /LK - manually set the license key xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx Verbose Logging To enable the verbose logging mode, perform the following: Open regedit. 15 For 32 bit systems, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Enhansoft\MIR v4 Client For 64 bit systems navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Enhansoft\MIR v4 Client Add the following string value: Verbose with a value of: True When you run the MIR server setup, additional logging will be added. On-going Rollout We recommend that a daily re-occurring advertisement be created and advertised to all PCs without MIR data. This will allow for new PCs, as they are deployed within your environment, to be inventoried once the major rollout of MIR is completed. Page 15 of 42

16 MIR Interface If you need to access the MIR client interface, navigate to the install location where you installed the application. The default location is: C:\Program Files\Enhansoft\Monitor Information Reporting_v4 Client From here you can easily connect to a local or a remote PC s MIR data by entering the PC s name. Then, click the Connect button to populate the program output fields. Scrubbing Monitor Data Removing old monitor data from a PC can be a tedious process as demonstrated by this blog post. MIR Interface allows you to easily remove this data either by using the menu option found under the tools menu, or by using a command line switch MIR_Interface.exe /Scrub. Note: PSEXEC is required for administrators to run the scrub feature. When monitor data is successfully scrubbed you will see the following message: Page 16 of 42

17 It is important to note that a reboot is required to repopulate the monitor data otherwise you will see the following message displayed within the MIR Interface. MIR will NOT force the reboot of a system once the scrub command is executed. For more details see the troubleshooting section. Export Display Data If needed, you can use the Export Display Data menu item for troubleshooting purposes. Use this feature to export the display data to a.txt file. Page 17 of 42

19 Client Field Use this field to connect to a local or a remote PC s MIR data. Manually type in another PC s name and then click connect. Appropriate permissions are required. The default is always localhost which is the PC that the interface is running on. Monitor Field In the Monitor Field is a list of all known monitors on a given PC. All monitors are listed independently of their PNPID. In the screenshot above you can see that there are three Samsung monitors that have been attached to this PC. PNPID Field This field displays the monitor s Plug and Play ID (PNPID). Manufacturer Field This field shows the full manufacturer name based on the device s PNPID. Device ID Field The Device ID Field indicates the manufacturer s unique device ID. Model Field This field displays the manufacturer s model description or monitor name. Page 19 of 42

20 EDID Version Field This field shows the EDID version and revision numbers. Serial Number Field The Serial Number Field indicates the serial number as defined within the EDID standards. Serial Number Note Not all manufacturers will include the serial number, or they will only provide a portion of the serial number which is usually the last 13 characters. Calculated Serial Number Field Based on the standards for monitors, the maximum serial number length is 13 characters. However many monitor manufacturers have serial numbers greater than 13 characters. This leaves the question: How can I determine what the complete serial number is for a given monitor? Through a number of processes, we have been able to expand the functionality of MIR to help determine the correct serial number, and in some cases even provide almost all of the serial number for some manufacturers. The calculated radio button is used to indicate that the serial number is either confirmed to be correct or is calculated and we have displayed the serial number as it would look on the physical monitor itself, except we have replaced unknown characters with an x. 21 The following screenshots illustrate this point: Notice the following for each screenshot: HWP2601 This HP monitor serial number is confirmed to be correct as displayed. ACRAD92 For this Acer model, we can expand the serial number to include all but the first 2 characters. (We believe that they are always ET but have not added this into MIR yet pending further research) DEL3013 For this Dell monitor we displayed the serial number as it would look on the physical monitor itself, except we replaced unknown characters with an x. CPQ1349 This Compaq monitor is an example of a monitor where we have not confirmed the physical serial number and therefore have placed the default serial number within the calculated field and marked it as Default. 22 Submitting Calculated Serial Numbers In order to help us update the calculated serial number flag, new submissions should be made to Please include: Export of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\DISPLAY Physical serial number of monitor as displayed All submissions become the property of Enhansoft Inc. Screen Size Field This field lists the physical dimensions of the monitor both in centimeters (cm) and inches. Native Pixel Format Field The native pixel format, also called preferred timing mode or default resolution, is shown in this field. This information is handy to have because it allows an administrator to determine if a monitor s blurriness is caused by incorrectly setting the native pixel format. Most PCs use liquid crystal display (LCD) flat panel monitors, and many monitor users do not realize that operating their monitor in a resolution other than the native resolution negatively impacts the performance of their LCD flat panel monitor. Unlike cathode ray tube (CRT) displays, the LCD screen used in flat panel monitors has a fixed, predefined pixel format over a set area. When a PC s resolution is set to the native pixel format, this allows for a 1:1 ratio and yields the best results. When the non-native resolution such as 800 x 600 is displayed on a 1280 x 1024 native resolution monitor scaling occurs. Scaling adjusts the image to fill the entire monitor screen. This often results in the manipulation of pixels to fill the screen, but the manipulation may cause text and images to appear blurry. Page 22 of 42

23 Year and Week Fields These fields show the date the monitor was manufactured. Week Manufactured Note Some manufacturers do not follow the standard for this information and instead display the month manufactured and not the ISO week as defined by the EDID standards. This means that you might see a higher than normal rate of monitors with weeks numbered For 0, it will generally mean that the vendor has set this for the whole year. For 1-12, this generally means that they have set the month instead of the week. Active Monitor State Field For a monitor to be Active the PC must be running Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server On these OS we can determine which monitor is truly active vs. those that are just marked active (false positives). Setting Active Marked Active Non-Active Meaning This monitor is truly active (Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012 only). This monitor is marked as active but could be a false positive (active state for Windows XP and Windows 2003). This monitor is not active. False Positive Note A false positive occurs only when Windows XP or Windows 2003 declares a monitor as active when in fact it is not active. There are many reasons why this occurs. The two most popular reasons are: the OS crashed and a new monitor replaces the original monitor the PC is imaged and the active monitor flag does not always get cleared Page 23 of 42

24 Unfortunately false positives will continue to exist and this is why we created a Scrub feature. The scrub feature will remove all existing monitor data from a PC and allow it to start fresh. It is not possible to have false positives with monitors set to Active within the Active Monitor State Field on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server Power Management Options Field What are the 4 monitor power management options and what do they mean? Mode Power Approximate Recovery Time On 100% 0 Second Standby < 80% 1 Second Suspend < 30W 5 Seconds Active-off < 8 W 20 Seconds All monitors have the On state and therefore it is not necessary to display this data. From these options we can see that a significant power savings can be achieved by ensuring that all monitors are set up to use either Suspend or Active-off mode. 25 MIR Report Descriptions The Count reports in MIR will drill through to List reports for more detailed information. From these List reports there is an option to drill through to further reports, where the final report is about an individual monitor s details. Where appropriate, report features include: Interactive Sorting Alternating Line Colors Associated Charts New and Updated Reports All reports are updated to account for the Real active monitor state All reports now use calculated serial numbers where available Based on feedback, existing reports are streamlined for better flow and ease of use Page 25 of 42

26 Count of Monitor Manufacturers This report provides you with the total number of monitors for each manufacturer in your environment. This report will drill through to Count of Monitor Models by Manufacturer, which in turn will drill through to List of PCs by Monitor Model, which will drill through to List of Monitors for a PC with the final drill through report being Computer Monitor Details. 27 Count of Monitor Models by Manufacturer This report provides you with the total number of monitor models for a specific manufacturer. You can drill through to this report from the previous report, Count of Monitor Manufacturers. This report will drill through to List of PCs by Monitor Model, which in turn will drill through to List of Monitors for a PC with the final drill through report being Computer Monitor Details. 28 List of PCs by Monitor Model will provide you with a list of all PCs who have a specific monitor model attached to them. In this screenshot, we see a report about the Dell E772p monitor model. Along with the list of PC names, we also see each monitor s active state, PNPID, serial number, and the year and week it was manufactured. 29 Count of Monitor States This report provides you with the total number of monitors by active state (Real, True, and False) in your environment. This report will drill through to List of Monitors by Active State, which in turn will drill through to List of Monitors for a PC with the final drill through report being Computer Monitor Details. List of Monitors by Manufactured Year and Week will provide you with information about specific monitors based on a given year and week. 33 Count of Monitors by Power Management Setting This report provides you with a count of the total number of monitors in your environment by power management setting from the most efficient to the least efficient (Active Off, Suspend, Standby and On). This report will drill through to List of Monitors by Power Management Setting, which in turn will drill through to List of Monitors for a PC with the final drill through report being Computer Monitor Details. Please note: if a monitor has more than one power management setting, only the most efficient setting will be counted. There is no way for MIR to determine what setting is being used as this is set via the PC s power management policies. Page 33 of 42

Computer Monitor Details This is the final drill through report for: Count of Monitor Manufacturers, Count of Monitor Models by Manufacturer, Count of Monitor States, Count of Monitors by Manufactured Year, Count of Monitors by Manufactured Year and Week, Count of Monitors by Size, List of all PCs with Projectors, List of Monitors by Active State, List of Monitors by Manufactured Year and Week, List of PCs by Monitor Model, List of PCs with a Specific Monitor Size, List of PCs with Multiple Active Monitors, List of Monitors for a PC, and List of Monitors by Partial Serial Number. In addition to the details found in List of Monitors for a PC, this report will clearly show you the calculated serial number, the screen size, native pixel format, and power management setting options of a specific monitor. 40 Reference Purchasing Policy In order to gain the full benefit of using MIR, a PC purchasing policy should be created. At a minimum your purchasing policy should ensure that all clients only purchase monitors from your company s recommended list. Uninstall Procedures To uninstall MIR (site server or client) perform the following: Go to Add/Remove Programs. Find the entry for MIR and click Uninstall. Optionally you can right click on the MIR MSI file and choose Uninstall. Troubleshooting Rogue Plug and Play ID - PNPID The following PNPIDs should not be used by any vendors. They are rogue IDs and are deemed bad by Microsoft. We only display the exact title, unedited, as listed by Microsoft within the PNP Database. Do NOT use AUO Do NOT use LPL Unknown Plug and Play ID PNPID The following is an example of unknown PNPIDs. These are either new vendors or they are an example of a new rogue PNPID. If you see these PNPIDs please contact support@enhansoft.com in either case and we will contact Microsoft directly on your behalf. 41 MIR Interface If you receive the following error message: To use the scrub function you must run MIR_Interface with Admin privileges, the application needs to be run with elevated rights to use the scrub function. If you receive an error message while using the scrub feature, verify that psexec.exe is on the computer which you would like to scrub. If not, download it from: Ensure that the psexec.exe is located in the path. If you receive the following error message: There was no monitor information found on the chosen client, this could be a result of: o A virtual machine where there is no information to be displayed. o MIR Interface was executed after scrubbing the display data. Reboot the PC to have this data populated. Page 41 of 42

42 If you receive the following error message: The WMI class ES_MIR was not found. Please install Monitor Information Reporting to view data. Please ensure that the Monitor Information Reporting client has been installed. For all other issues, please contact support.
