1 LOCATION The Parent Center is located at Avaxat Elementary School, Las Brisas Road, North, Murrieta, California, The Parent Center is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday when classes are scheduled. MISSION The mission of the Parent Center is to provide high quality educational and personal support services to parents and educators living and working in Southwest Riverside County. THE GOALS The Parent Center will: Provide a variety of high quality, low cost, parent education classes that meet the cultural needs of the community; Collaborate with local agencies to provide high quality specialty workshops; Collaborate with local groups and agencies to provide support groups and activities; Collaborate with the school district and other community agencies to provide programs for parents and the community that insure every child is ready to learn; and Provide high quality workshops and support to early childhood educators. HISTORY In 1992, the Murrieta School Board had the opportunity to visit a program in Long Beach Unified School District called a parent center. They were so impressed by the services that could be offered to parents and families, that upon their return they charged the Murrieta Council PTA Parent Involvement Committee with the task of investigating the possibilities of a program for Murrieta and to make recommendations to the Board. The committee made recommendations for program design, staffing and facilities, staff development, funding, materials and equipment. The Board approved committee s recommendations and committed 50% of the budget up to $40,000 from the District General Fund to support the program. In March of 1994, the Parent Center opened in vacant classroom space at Murrieta Valley High School. Since then the Parent Center operated at Shivela Middle, Creekside High

2 School and finally coming to its permanent location at Avaxat Elementary. Since 1994, over 9,000 2 parents and professionals have attended parent education programs offered through the Parent Center. Those attending support sessions through the Parent Center has exceeded 6,000. Parent Center staff has provided quality child care services for over 14,000 children while their parent(s) attended a parenting series, one night seminar, English as a Second Language, other adult education classes, or support groups. CONTRIBUTORS MVUSD S financial commitment to the program gave the program the impetus it needed to get started. As the program was being implemented, local private and public agencies provided necessary funds and equipment. American Industrial Manufacturing Services, Inc. was the first private business to support the Parent Center, contributing $10,000 a year for the first three years. Riverside County Office of Education, Children s Services Unit and High Aircraft, San Diego contributed surplus furniture that is still used today. The Parent Center has received public and private grant awards; they include: OUR CONTRIBUTORS PRIVATE AND PUBLIC American Industrial Manufacturing Services, Inc., Murrieta Guidant, Temecula GTE, Inland Empire Riverside County Economic Development City of Murrieta Economic Development City of Temecula Economic Development City of Temecula Community Services County of Riverside Probation County of Riverside Department of Social Services Referral and Resources First Five Riverside (Prop 10) Murrieta Council PTA The Parent Center presents this resource and referral booklet for staff members of our district and members of the community in hopes of expanding services to provide support for our families.
