2 Protect your home! These days we spend hours planning improvements to our homes, such as new furniture, interior design ideas and makeovers, but rarely think about the security of our homes. The majority of cars have security alarms but very few homes are protected. Securing your home can be simple and affordable. 3 So where are the risks and what can I do to reduce them Risk: No clearly visible security measures! You are 10 times more likely to be burgled than those with good security! The risk of being seen or heard burgling a property is enough to deter most would be burglars. Solution: Install CCTV, a Burglar Alarm and Security Lighting in plain view. Risk: No one at home at work, on holiday? Intrusion might not be noticed for days or weeks leaving plenty of time for a clean getaway! Give your house the lived in look especially when away on holiday. Don t forget to cancel newspapers and milk deliveries. Perhaps ask a trustworthy neighbour to collect post or park on your driveway. Solution: Install automatic timers to switch lights and radios on. Risk: Doors and windows left unlocked! If you can access your property through unlocked doors and windows then so can the burglar in an instant! Ensure you have good quality locks fitted to all doors including french and patio doors and don t forget your windows. When you leave the house check they are locked, especially ground floor and easily accessible windows on higher floors, such as above a flat roof! Solution: Fit good quality locks.? Be cautious of what items in your house are visible from the street - burglars window shop and make shopping lists! Solution: Avoid leaving packaging for expensive items outside your home don t advertise your purchases! Risk: Distraction burglary! 11 Many burglaries are committed by opportunists and could have been prevented. Simply getting into a crime reduction routine dramatically reduces the risk of your home being broken into and you becoming a victim. Closing and locking all outer doors, windows and side gates removes the means to gain entry quickly and quietly and keeping keys and valuables out of sight removes temptation. Fitting an alarm and property marking will also deter a burglar. Don t forget your garage and outbuildings as they normally contain power tools, garden equipment, bicycles and even freezers full of food will attract some burglars.
