2 Break-ins cost Australians $700 million in the last 12 months*. ANDY ELLIS President Tyco Fire and Security Keeping the home and family safe is a key priority for Australians, which is why it is important to ensure your home is protected from intruders. While recent police statistics show the number of break-ins is declining in many areas, household burglaries still remain one of the most prevalent crimes across Australia #. ADT Security s 2015 Secure Homes Report takes a closer look at the issue of residential crime and reveals the latest attitudes, trends and behaviours towards home security, the impact and cost of a break-in, the perception and adoption of new security technology and the role of social media and its link to home break-ins. By understanding the nature of crime and the latest trends in home security, you can be better informed about the best ways to manage home security and enjoy greater peace of mind. ADT Security s 2015 Secure Homes Report was conducted by online research company Core Data, which surveyed 1500 homeowners and renters around Australia in For further information about the report contact us directly on , or visit Regards, KEY FINDINGS Home break-ins cost Australians approximately $700 million in the last year*. Of the Australian s surveyed: 37% have been the victim of a break-in. 8% were broken into in the past 12 months (down from 12% in 2013). 40% were broken into by forced entry through a window (compared to 32% in 2013). 24% said they were home at the time, while 15% were away on holiday. 15% thought home burglary was a problem in their street (down from 18.5% in 2013 and 22.5% in 2012). Complacency towards home security remains a concern with 55% reporting they accidentally leave home or go to bed without locking up. Nearly a quarter (24%) have accidentally left home with the front door unlocked. Of those who have forgotten to lock up, 58% experienced a break-in at their current residence in the last 12 months. 31% of the children of participants have posted their whereabouts on social media, and 29% have revealed their holiday plans and activities online. 40% who experienced a break-in failed to claim the costs from their insurance company. 39% believe security is the key benefit of automation technologies. Official crime rates are down but the cost of home burglary remains high. With the average cost of stolen items being $3,666, break-ins cost Australians an estimated $700 million* in the past 12 months. Our report revealed that of the Australian respondents: Overall, 37% have personally experienced a break-in (up from 27% in 2013) during their lifetime. 8% have experienced a break-in at their current residence in the past 12 months. Close to one quarter (24%) were broken into while someone was home. More than one in seven (15%) were broken into while away on holiday. Break-ins can be more than a petty crime, with those who have experienced a break-in reporting 48% of items stolen were of a high value. Majority of households may be letting burglars in too easily. Our Australian participants told us they are putting themselves at risk of a break-in: 55% have accidentally gone to bed without locking up. Nearly a quarter (24%) have accidentally left home with the front door open. More than one in five (21%) hide a spare key outside their property for visiting tradespeople/cleaners or for a family member (up from 17% in 2013). One in five leaves a spare key outside Do you hide a spare key outside your property for collection by visiting tradespeople, cleaners or situations when a family member may lock themselves out? % There is a direct link between complacent habits and home burglary. In the last 12 months, 58% of participants who forgot to lockup experienced a break-in at their current residence. Of those who ve left home with the door unlocked, 42% were broken into at their current residence in the last 12 months. Nature of break-ins how intruders most commonly gain access to a property. Our report found: % % Forced entry through a window remains the most common method of break-in (40%). This is followed by forced entry through a back door (22%), forced entry through the front door (12%), entry through an unlocked window (8%), through a garage (4%), or via a balcony (2%). A quarter of residents (24%) have had goods stolen from their home s outdoor areas. Andy Ellis President Tyco Fire and Security # December_2014.pdf * Based on the proportion of Australians who reported being broken into in the last 12 months and had items stolen. * Based on the proportion of Australians who reported being broken into in the last 12 months and had items stolen.

3 Installation of monitored alarms and CCTV cameras has tripled in the past two years. Most Australians believe home automation will become a mainstream presence within the next three to five years. More Australians are adopting home security technology. Our report found: A range of home security technologies are more commonly used today compared to Installations of monitored alarms, CCTV cameras and security keypads have each tripled in the last two years, while the installation of intercoms and motion lighting has doubled. Peace of mind remains the primary motivation for installing a home alarm system. Of those participants who have a home alarm system installed, the most common reasons for installing it was a desire to keep the home secure while away (45%), protect their family (36%) and to safeguard high value and personal items (30%). By far the most common factor for those who are considering their security options is ease of use (70%), followed by ongoing cost and maintenance of the system (both 45%) and 24/7 monitoring (43.5%). Gen Ys and renters are most at risk, but less likely to be insured. 20% of Gen Y respondents were more likely to have been the victim of a break-in at their current residence in the last 12 months compared to the general population (8%). Gen Y respondents were also more likely to be broken into while someone was home (33% compared to 24% of the general population), and more likely to be robbed while away on holiday (24% compared to 15% of the overall population). Despite being more prone to home break-ins, Gen Y revealed that it is considerably less likely to be insured against home break-ins (56.5% compared to 81% of the overall population). Gen Y Australians who are renting are even less likely to be insured (44%) against home break-ins. How do Australians protect their homes? Our participants told us that: 68% of residents have physical security measures in place to protect the home. These include lock and key, window locks, guard dogs, security screens and burglar bars. They are increasingly adopting security technology to protect the home, with a quarter of residents supporting physical security measures with home security technology (24%). The most commonly used home security technologies are motion sensors with lighting (46%), a stand-alone alarm installed by a security company (39%) and a monitored home alarm system installed by a security company (31%). What security measures do you take to protect your home? The appeal for home automation technology continues to grow with 50% of Australians saying they would like remote home control. Of all our respondents: Half said they would like to have the ability to remotely control their home security system, lighting, climate and appliances while they are away from the home. Home automation technology is most appealing to Gen Y (64%). Gen Y is also the most likely to think that home automation will become mainstream in most Australian homes within the next five years (67.0%). How long do you think it will be before home automation becomes a mainstream presence in Australian homes? What home security technologies do you use in your home? 4 Social media is linked to home break-ins: 31% of children post their whereabouts on social media. 55% of children using social media are engaged with multiple platforms Social media habits of children are going unchecked. The survey found that social media could be linked to home break-ins. Our research revealed children who have posted potentially sensitive content to social media sites are more likely to have their home broken into. We were told that of our respondents children: Most children (55%) have multiple social media accounts (two or more). Close to one third of parents have rarely or never spoken to their kids about the risk that social media posts can have on their home security. The average age of children identified as being active on social media by respondents was 15 years. Children who have posted their whereabouts on social media were found to be almost six times more likely to have been burgled in the past 12 months than those who did not (24% v s 4%). Similarly, children who posted photos of their home on social media are almost five times more likely to have been burgled in the past 12 months than those who did not (36% v s. 8%). 5 Every home in every neighbourhood is a target for burglary. By following these simple tips you can help protect your home and family. HOME SECURITY TIPS Ensure that locks on doors and windows are secure as they are the first line of defence. Don t leave the packaging of new appliances on the footpath in front of your house. You re just advertising that you have new goods worth stealing. Instead, tear up the box and put it in the recycling. If your home has a shed or garage, ensure it is properly secured not only could items be stolen, but items in the shed or garage can be used to help break into your property. Ensure spare keys aren t hidden in obvious places or left outside in the first place. Thieves know to look in mailboxes, under doormats and above doorways for keys. Don t make it easy for them to enter your home. If living in an apartment or multi-storey home, be sure to lock doors and windows as burglars can scale exterior walls. Ensure your house has good exterior lighting; think about installing sensor lights at entry and exit points of the house, as light acts as a deterrent to thieves. If possible, time these outside lights to switch on automatically at night. A monitored home alarm system can be one of the most effective home security measures. It s possible to isolate certain zones of the home to be monitored, so alarms can be activated even when the home is occupied. In the event that an ADT alarm is triggered, a signal is sent to a 24 hour Security Response Centre where trained operators identify the cause and take appropriate action. Make sure you or your children don t reveal holiday plans to strangers or online via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Inform your neighbours if you are going away on holiday so that they can keep an eye on your property and be sure to leave them emergency contact details. Consider hanging old clothes on the line to give the impression someone is home or not away for an extended period of time. Lower the telephone ringing volume so that it cannot be heard from outside your home and avoid leaving a recorded message indicating that you are away.
