1 Speed Your Recovery From a Brain Injury or Stroke Did you know that recovery from brain injuries and strokes is highly variable? Most people are back to normal in month or two after a brain injury, but many people are slow to recover or make initial progress and then stall out. It s similar with strokes. Recovery is usually fast in the beginning and many people are back to normal in the first several months, but others hit a plateau and don t get completely better, even with years of treatment and therapy. If this sounds like you, then keep reading! You will find this report helpful if: It s hard to concentrate or remember things from one day to the next They have large mood swings, more than before They ache all over, or have pains that come and go for no apparent reason They can look normal to other people, but they know you are not their old self You might have been told you just have to live with it. There is nothing more to be done. But that is not necessarily true. I have helped hundreds of people move to the next level of recovery, faster and more completely than they had thought possible. When you understand four key principles about your brain, you ll understand how to speed your recovery from a brain injury or stroke. 1
2 KEY PRINCIPLE #1: IF THE CELLS IN YOUR BRAIN CAN T TALK WITH EACH OTHER, THEY GET SICK AND DIE If the cells in your brain can t talk with each other, they get sick and die, and this is really important if you have had a brain injury or stroke. When a part of your brain is damaged by a stroke the surrounding areas also suffer because they can t talk with the cells they usually talk with. It s similar with brain injuries. The injury damages the long delicate wires called axons that are the communication tracts in your brain. In both cases, stokes and brain injuries, the usual communication system in your brain is disturbed. The brain can t do its job, and that causes all kinds of problems. So let s talk more about the communication system in your brain. KEY PRINCIPLE # 2: THERE IS MORE TO THE COMMUNICATION PATHWAYS IN YOUR BRAIN THAN SIMPLE PHYSICAL CONNECTIONS Your brain uses an extensive communication system to send messages from one area to another. The communication pathways in your brain are like the streets in a city, and the flow of nerve messages is like the flow of traffic. The flow of traffic in a city depends on both the condition of the streets and on the timing of the traffic lights. If the traffic lights aren t working, or not coordinated with each other, traffic gets snarled. In a similar way, the flow of nerve messages in your brain depends on the condition of the nerve tracts and on the timing of the messages. Your brain uses ultra-precise timing to make sure that messages are delivered easily and effectively. If an earthquake damages a city street the highway department uses detour signs and adjusts the traffic lights to send traffic around the damage. If you have had a brain injury or a stroke your brain has to adjust the timing of its messages so they can detour around the areas of damage. 2
3 KEY PRINCIPLE # 3: YOUR BRAIN USES ULTRA-PRECISE TIMING TO SEND MESSAGES FROM ONE AREA TO ANOTHER The communication systems in your brain require more than physical connections. Recent discoveries on the frontier of brain science describe how the communication pathways in your brain actually work, and they ve led to a simple, effective therapy to speed recovery from brain injuries and strokes. Here is how it works. Your brain is made of billions of nerve cells and each nerve turns on and off many times a second. When a brain cell is on, it can talk with its neighbours. When it is off, it can t. If two nerve cells want to talk with each other they have to coordinate their timing so they are both on at the same time. This is especially important for people who have had brain injuries and strokes. Since many of the physical connections are damaged by the injury or stroke, the brain has to send messages by an alternate route, like using a highway detour around areas of construction. It has to adjust the timing at different steps of the communication pathway, just like city planners have to adjust the timing on street lights to detour traffic around an area of construction. KEY PRINCIPLE # 4: YOUR BRAIN IS DELICATE AFTER A BRAIN INJURY OR A STROKE. YOU HAVE TO BE GENTLE WITH YOUR BRAIN, IN ALL AREAS OF YOUR DAILY LIFE AND YOUR TREATMENT Your brain is delicate after a brain injury or stroke, and you ve probably noticed that you get tired more easily after physical exertion, mental exertion, or loud noises and bright lights. The cells in your brain are weak because they have not been able to talk with each other, and they are out of shape. (end of key principles) Avoid this common mistake that will slow your healing The most common mistake that people make when they are recovering from a brain injury or a stroke is trying to do too much, too quickly. If you ve had a brain injury or stroke, it s vitally important to respect your limits in every area of your life. Stop when you get tired, whether it is reading, talking, exercising, or anything else. Overextending can actually slow your progress. Yes, it is important to push yourself and try new things, but stop when you start to get tired. 3
4 The most effective way to jump-start your recovery When you ve had a brain injury or stroke, your rehabilitation efforts should be precise and gentle. They should respect your brain s limits, and help your brain to re-establish effective communication from one area to another.
