4 COUNSELING POLICIES Students under 18 require parental permission in writing to speak to a counselor Students seen every other week Appointments required; emergency spots available daily $20 fee for no-show/late cancellation Release required to speak to family Students must give permission for us to notify you in cases of psychological hospitalization Forms you may fill out today regarding notification are not the same as our release forms

5 PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES Free Short-term solution-focused therapy Free Psychiatric meetings for medication management Free yoga classes & meditation classes Peer Counselors Counselor on call for emergencies 24/7

6 REFERRAL FROM CURRENT CLINICIAN If your student sees a therapist/psychiatrist Have him/her sign a release with the clinician and fax it to our office We can hold it until we see your student Gives permission for us to speak to them to create continual care

8 Students and parents are often concerned with different aspects of college... â Students: with fitting in (making friends) and having a good time â Parents: with success (grades) and preparing for a bright future (getting a well-paying job)

9 Do stay in touch mutually decide how often is best Do encourage independence, using local assistance Do be realistic they are overwhelmed (help them keep their studies the priority) Do be prepared for change values clashes, personal changes in beliefs Do coach them to be assertive stand up for themselves Do be aware of roommates/suitemates are they a +/- influence? Do you talk with the parents of these folks? Don t panic some need to learn from consequences do your best to let them face those consequences Don t let them wait too long to start asking for help here

11 HOMESICKNESS Happens to almost all Freshmen Worse the first 4 weeks Encourage them to be patient-realistic Encourage them to establish social roots, and use the many supports here Encourage them to explore the campus and the area

12 WHEN SHOULD I CALL THE COUNSELING CENTER? Social withdrawal Marked change in appearance, hygiene Excessive self-criticism Tearful calls home outnumber the others Talk of hopelessness Excessive fatigue or lethargic mood Extreme increases in energy, rapid speech Dramatic change in grades References to suicide or self-harm, vague or not

13 WHAT WILL THE COUNSELING CENTER DO? Ask an RA or RD to go talk to him Send a Peer Counselor to check on your student Ask University Police to do a Wellness Check for suicide Have a counselor call and encourage him to make an appointment

15 Drag them to the Counseling Center Make them talk about things if they don t want to Call you back without their permission to tell you how it went (We will encourage them to call you).

17 KEY THINGS PARENTS CAN DO How to stay informed Discuss sharing your student s ID # and password so you have access to their grades Get a copy of each class syllabus: quizzes, papers, test - due dates, faculty office hours Get dates for add/drop and withdrawal dates Get to know their roommates/suitemates parent s s and phone numbers Get name and number of RA s, RD s
