1 April 2, 2007 Dear Student: Student Advocate Positions for 2007/2008 The Portland Community College Sylvania Women s Resource Center is seeking students to participate in the Women s Resource Center Women s Leadership Training Program during the 2007/2008 academic year. The Women s Leadership Training Program participants staff the Women s Resource Center as paid Student Advocates. Student Advocates provide information to students seeking assistance from the Center, make referrals to campus and community services and programs, provide peer support and advocacy, develop, organize, and implement programming for the campus community. Students selected to work in the Women s Resource Center will commit to: Work for the entire academic year. Work ten hours a week - including 2-hour weekly staff meeting. Attend overnight WRC Training Retreat (September 7, 8, & 9) Participate in the Women s Leadership Training Course at PCC on September 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, & 14, 2007; each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Be available to work September 19 & 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Applications are due by Friday, April 27, Interviews will begin the week of April 30, Selection will be made by May 25, If you have questions or would like further information please contact Deborah Evind, Coordinator at Sincerely, Deborah Evind, Coordinator Room CC 273 (503) devind@pcc.edu 1

2 Job Description Title: Student Advocate Supervisor: Position Summary: Women s Resource Center Coordinator The Student Advocate provides staffing for the including; sharing information, making effective and energetic referrals, providing peer support for problem solving and self-advocacy, developing and implementing educational programs, organizing events, outreaching campus community about WRC programs and services, and creating a force on campus to dismantle sexism, racism, classism, and all forms of oppression. Responsibilities: Answer telephone and respond to walk-in inquiries Provide information and referrals to appropriate campus and community services Provide caring peer support and advocacy to students seeking assistance Promote WRC programs, services, events, and activities. Develop, plan and implement events that represent relevant local, national, and global women s issues. Create promotional materials and displays (flyers, posters, etc.) Work collaboratively with other Student Advocates, Coordinator and Admin. Asst. Attend weekly Staff Meetings and quarterly Staff Development sessions Complete all required data collection and record keeping Other duties as assigned Qualifications Student at PCC Sylvania campus for at least two terms and have completed a minimum of 12 credits within the last academic year Enroll in at least 6 credits per term for entire 07/08 academic year Maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or better Must be in good academic standing for the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment. Must have a demonstrated knowledge of women s issues and an interest in developing knowledge of feminism. Must exhibit sensitivity toward traditionally underrepresented groups (such as students of color, LGBTQ students, and differently-abled students).
