Las Vegas Roundup Sober Fun In The Sun 41st International AA Women s Conference Las Vegas, NV International Convention Lets Celebrate! Toronto, Canada Of Mountains and Molehills RECENTLY I attended an AA convention. All in all it was mighty worthwhile. After the convention, I went over to the local clubhouse in that town and ran into John----I had met John several times and had heard him talk at meetings. He has some eight years of AA sobriety behind him. I knew him to be most humble, a willing worker with complete serenity, and a good sense of humor. His story had revealed him as a "low bottom" drinker. When I asked him why I hadn't seen him at the convention, his face took on a wry look and, speaking slowly in deep thought, this was his answer. "I don't go to conventions because I don't believe in them. I feel that they eventually will be the ruination of AA." "Why?" I asked. "Because organization in AA coupled with these professional AA speakers is trying to compete with organized religion and when AA tries to do that, AA will fail with alcoholics the same as religion previously failed with them," he said. "I know you are going to tell me that AA does not profess to teach religion, but when these pro speakers talk, they preach spiritualism as a must, just like the church preaches the gospel, and in my book they are both in the same boat." I answered him in this way. "John, I am afraid you have lost the point of these conventions. The spirit and not the speeches are the main consideration. The spirit of a crowd of alkies getting together, enjoying each other's company and having a good time, sober. Besides, a convention affords small groups the opportunity of hearing new speakers and learning how other groups conduct their meetings." John replied, "I'll grant you all that is good, but how about my main argument, these professional AA speakers with their spiritualistic, bombastic speeches?" I said, "I am afraid you are making a mountain out of a mole hill." I left John then, and drove back to my home. But I kept thinking of John and what he had said. There was some basis of fact to his remarks. It continued to seep in. First, by professional AA speakers, I know what he meant. There is a type of AA member, usually an older member with years of AA behind him who, while he doesn't admit it or possibly recognize it, considers himself an "indispensable" on any speaking program. He doesn't get paid in money, but in selfesteem. It inflates his ego to get up and talk and while he professes to be humble by not asking to talk, still he sees to it that if he doesn't get on any particular program, at least one of his disciples does, so the great indispensable talks vicariously. He cites having had one or several spiritual experiences. I believe he means spiritual awakenings. What has happened is that God has given us the power to live again and the power to carry the message. It is unnecessary and unbecoming for us to become evangelists. These select AA speakers speak in platitudes and generalities, never bothering to go much into detail. They speak "sweet music" in a serious vein, never seeming to remember our Thirteenth Step of, "Not taking yourself too darn seriously, and not forgetting your sense of humor." They would have you believe that by following the AA program everything will be all right, but we find we still have our troubles, only we are able to face them with knowledge and power. They have formed a clique, a sort of mutual admiration society, and refer to each other as my pal, Bill, the last speaker, or my pal, George, the next speaker. To the AA pro speaker: you are basically a fine AA carrying the message, but you are speaking subjectively and not objectively. Step aside, insist on it, and be sincere in doing it. You are the shepherd or one of them of your group. Let the newer members talk. You will be surprised how many of them can and have a message to deliver if you will only encourage them to do so. The longer you are away from your last drink, the less able you are to reach the new member. It is my belief that a spiritual awakening cannot be taught or learned. It is something that comes from within, from the heart or soul, like love. Old John set me to thinking and this is what I came up with. I pass it on to you for what it is worth. T. N. 2 1. It's not old behavior if I'm still doing it. 2. If you're looking to have an image in AA, look around at the meetings you go to and look at who you're trying to impress. 3. An alcoholic is a person who wants to be held while he's isolating. 4. The idea that alcoholics, drug addicts, sex addicts, overeaters, smokers, etc, etc, should all just go to AA meetings because a disease, is a disease, is a disease was started by a treatment center that only had one van. 5. If drinking is interfering with your work, you're probably a heavy drinker. If work is interfering with your drinking, you're probably an alcoholic. 6. I often obsessively pursue feeling good, no matter how bad it makes me feel. 7. When I was new, I didn't think I had any obsessions until I started thinking about it. Then it was all I could think about. "HERD" AROUND THE ROOMS 8. How come if alcohol kills millions of brain cells, it never killed the ones that made me want to drink? 9. If you want to quit drinking, you are going to have to quit drinking. 10. I would rather go through life sober, believing I am an alcoholic, than go through life drunk, trying to convince myself that I am not analcoholic. 11. Resentments are like stray cats: if you don't feed them, they'll go away. 12. The difference between a problem drinker and an Alcoholic is that: A. When alcohol is taken away from the problem drinker, the problem goes away. B. When alcohol is taken away from the Alcoholic, the problem begins. 13. I can't do His will my way. 14. Campout with Mardi Gras theme in August turned out well. On Sept. 11th there will be a fundraiser for Christmas. Sept 18 there will be a Remember George picnic at Manitou Park. Meat will be provided, pot luck on the rest. Hoot Owls Abraham O: A second group inventory was done which resulted in an increase of interest in AA Service. Lunch Bunch Lisa S.: Lisa has not been able to attend her home group meetings very often due to her job, so she is going to discuss with the group whether they would like her to continue serving as GSR. Mountain Home Bill T.: Campout turned out good with their campfire meeting lasting a long time. Attendance is up especially for the noon meeting. They do have a speaker for this month s Thursday night potluck meeting. New Beginnings Don T.: Don is unable to attend the meeting a lot but it has grown. A lot of old timers. Saturday Night Live Terri N. -Rachael, Alt. GSR reported. Campout had only eleven people show up but they still had a great time with lots of food. SNL purchased 60 adult tickets and 70 children tickets for people to attend Sober Days at the fair. Meetings are getting bigger. Shoulder to Shoulder Brenda B.: Everything is holding steady. Grimes Creek campout is this weekend Sept 4th and 5th. See Brenda for details. Seekers Ken S.: Everything is going well. Everyone introduces them selves. If there is a newcomer in the meeting then someone shares the first few steps. All positions have been filled except for Archives. Step Sisters Cindy H.: Not present. Speakeasy Angela A.: New GSR for this group. They have held a group inventory and had a format change. They now have anyone willing to sponsor raise their hands. Sundowners Perry C.: Out to being out of town, Perry has not been to the meeting so is unable to tell us anything about it. Turning Point Ron T.: Fliers are out for the Grimes Creek Campout on Sept The Turning Point meetings are Mon Fri at 5:30 PM. On Wednesdays only, the meeting is held across the hall Women s Connection Linda H.: Attendance is good and they are having a good time.
