C. Michael Bowman, PhD, MD Medical University of South Carolina AAE Member since October 2013 As an academic pediatric pulmonologist, I treat a large number of children with asthma from all different family backgrounds in both the outpatient and inpatient areas. I take every opportunity I can to update and teach professionals at all levels (as well as patients/families) about asthma, including doctors, medical students, residents, respiratory therapists, nurses and pharmacists. As the asthma champion for the South Carolina chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, I reach out to pediatricians across the state to convey the importance of excellent asthma care, and as a board member for the non-profit SC Asthma Alliance I play a major role in reaching front-line care providers such as asthma educators, respiratory therapists and school nurses in our regional asthma update programs.
Kari Edgar Elliott BSN, RN, AE-C University of Missouri, enrolled in the DNP program AAE Member since July 2012 I have been a nurse in the pediatric and emergency room setting for a little over 11 years. Since June 2013 I have been pursuing my doctorate of nursing with a pediatric emphasis through the Sinclair School of Nursing at the University of Missouri, Columbia (DNP-PNP). I anticipate graduating May 2018 with a project completion on asthma. I currently am enrolled as a graduate student and work on the weekends in the emergency room. I have been completing clinical rotations in the pediatric asthma clinic and in March 2016 I am speaking on asthma at a national conference. I have volunteered in the last three community events through the AAE conference. I want to help and assist children early so that they can live the lives they desire along with decreasing the morbidity and mortality due to asthma through education.
Kathleen Cooper-McDermott, MSN, MPH, RN, AE-C Home visits for a geriatric population. AAE Member since March 2014 As a founding member of the New London County Asthma Action Partnership, I promote strong evidenced based Asthma programs to my patients. As a professional with a rich history and career in Asthma care, I keep current with asthma modalities and treatment. I offer this in the context of seeing patients and educating them and/or their caregivers.
Dewey F. Hahlbohm, PA-C, AE-C Allergy & Asthma Center (Missoula, Montana) AAE Member since May 2008 Vision Statement: I want to continue my work with providers, families and asthma patients by expanding guidelines based asthma education. I want to continue working with the Asthma Educator Review and Case Manager courses and the faculty coordinators. Executive and operations committees experience has provided me insight into the vision and mission of AAE and I intend to help AAE grow its role and health impacts in the future. I would especially like to expand the role of Physicians Assistants providing guidelines based asthma care. I will continue providing Asthma Quality Improvement training to ED staffs in critical care hospitals throughout Montana.
Gregory Metz, MD, AE-C Oklahoma Allergy and Asthma Clinic University of Oklahoma College of Medicine AAE Member since November 2014 I have the opportunity to see patients with asthma on a daily basis in clinic. I have also been working on programs that teach healthcare professionals how to educate patients through a narrative-based, patient-centered framework with the goal of improving medication adherence. I enjoy participating as a presenter in Asthma Educator Certification courses.
Anne M. Walton RN AE-C Boston Public Health Commission AAE Member since February 2010 My position with Boston Medical Center was that of an asthma research nurse/asthma care manager and supervisor of CHWs doing home visits for asthma. As a consultant for the Boston Public Health Commission, I participate in the ongoing training of community health workers doing asthma home visits AND training of CHW supervisors. Specializing in these areas has been an amazing experience that I can continue to apply to enhance some of the national programs that are being developed by AAE.
Virginia M. Thomas, MSN, FNP- BC, AE-C Metro Pediatrics, PC (Birmingham, Alabama) AAE Member since July 2004 I am a Family Nurse Practitioner with 20 years experience and total of over 30 years in the Nursing profession. I am currently employed in a busy Pediatric practice as NP with about 40% of patients who are diagnosed with asthma. I have been a Certified Asthma Educator for past 11 years. Over past 4 years, I have developed an Asthma education program for our practice which has decreased the number of ER visits. I am challenged daily to provide asthma education in an organized program in such a busy environment. I have volunteered for past 2 years as a Provider to perform physical examinations for children 8-12 years of age attending Camp Wheeze Away in Wetumpka, AL. I currently Preceptor Graduate Students in the Nurse Practitioner Program at University of Alabama and provide a special interest in Asthma education. I am very passionate about asthma care and enjoy empowering my patients and their families to management their Asthma.
Tammy H. Shikany, MAE, RRT, RCP Children s Hospital of Alabama AAE Member since June 2014 Vision Statement: I envision the Association of Asthma Educators (AAE) standardizing asthma management nationally. As a board member, I anticipate bringing ideas, expertise, and skills in asthma management I practice at Children s of Alabama. Once the standardized Guide for asthma management is completed by board members, I am prepared to become the liaison for Alabama and surrounding states. To accomplish this task, I foresee collaborating with the American Association of Respiratory Care, Lung Health Association and other pertinent organizations. The guide to asthma management tool can be presented and taught at an AAE conference while offering continuing education for health care professionals.
