2 What is the data center? A dedicated facility to consolidate distributed IT equipments and to operate them efficiently. The data center is a generic name for buildings customized for the installation and operation of Internet servers and equipments such as fixed-line, mobile and IP phones. Especially, those specific to Internet connection are sometimes called as Internet data centers (IDC). 3 Features of the Data Center Very huge communication lines such as optical fibers are already lead-in compared with normal office buildings to make high capacity communication available. Also, multiple carriers are generally supported. The buildings themselves are made earthquake-proof to minimize damage to services even in disasters. High capacity batteries and local generators are installed just in case for power outages. Fire extinguishing systems with N2 or CFC gas are installed rather than the normal sprinklers so that damages to the installed equipments can be minimized even in fire of the facility. Since multiple computers are consolidated, adequate number of computers can be used for the amount of data to process by carefully choosing the operation method. This will eliminate the need to install additional computer resources and lead to cost reduction and then to promotion of energy saving. Professional operators are on duty 24/7 for efficient and high-quality operation. This also leads to operation cost reduction. As described in the left, promotion of data center utilization will bring abundant benefits to any enterprise activities as well as to personal activities, and will lead to the realization of rich and sustainable lowcarbon societies. Overview of the activities Benefits of the JDCC members include obtaining the newest information on the needs of the users and the industry trends. In addition, by participating to each working group you can involve yourself in information exchange with government or local government, in information sharing with other related organizations, and in specifying standards. 6 Admission guide Japan Data Center Council is raising members Qualification Any enterprises, organizations, etc. that agree with the objectives and projects of the Council can become a member. For details about the objectives and projects of the Council, please see our official website ( Outline of activities To respond to an increasing amount of information worldwide and to implement measures and policies and make proposals for promoting effective activities, we promote information sharing, technological development, and joint research across the barriers among enterprises and projects, offer opinions to relevant ministries and agencies, and make international contributions. 1.
