3 *7907MGT Managing Strategically Pre-requisites are in place for the course. Students who have not met the pre-requisites must gain approval from the MBA Director to enrol. Course One: 7901AFE Accounting for Managers This course examines the generation and use of an organisation's financial information for decision making and encompasses both financial accounting and management accounting topics. The course concentrates on accounting systems in general, construction and analysis of financial statements, costing, performance measurement, and accounting for decision making, planning and control. Upon completion of the course, students will have furthered their appreciation of the role and value of accounting in improving firm performance; developed their understanding and skill in financial statement preparation and analysis, as well as cost and budgetary analysis for management decision making, planning and control. The course will be presented each week in a three hour seminar block for the duration of the semester. Course material placed on the web includes course outline, lecture notes, solutions to homework, assessment material and administration notices. Course Two: 7902AFE Business Economics This course is suited to managers, business administrators and those who engage in strategic decision-making in a business environment. Business managers need to understand both the nature of the macroeconomic environment in which they make those decisions and the nature of the market in which their firm operates. This course provides a practical approach to these matters, using a problem solving approach and collaborative learning. The course will be presented each week in a three hour class for the duration of the semester and is classified as Mode B - Web Dependent. Under this mode, you must use the web to interact with the education content necessary for study. Face-to-face inclass activities are designed to enhance the education content on the web. Course Three: 7905AFE Corporate Finance This course aims to provide a broad introduction to the study of corporate finance. In keeping with the central role of finance in corporate management, it is a foundation core course for all students undertaking the Master of Business Administration degree. An understanding of corporate finance is essential for a mastery of business administration and for the effective performance of a senior management role regardless of specific function. Sustainability issues from a corporate finance perspective will also be examined pertaining to resource productivity, risk management, as well as aspects that contribute to a more informed consideration of corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, the impact of emissions trading scheme and Kaplan s triple bottom line. Corporate finance is an essential prerequisite knowledge for those students who wish to undertake further studies in finance. The course will be delivered in a lecture/workshop format during the semester. This format will involve the presentation of material by the lecturer, throughout which student participation and involvement is encouraged. Course Four: 7906MKT Marketing Management This course offers a conceptual basis for making marketing decisions in a modern-day business environment where organisations face competitive, social and environmental challenges in delivering customer value and achieving their business objectives. Marketing management requires a broad understanding of consumer behaviour and contemporary marketing strategies related to product development and management, pricing, distribution and communication, to enable decision making that reflects an understanding of social impact and sustainability principles. This course is offered in flexible learning mode. This means that all course material is available on the Griffith Business School website. Classroom sessions will comprise of three hour workshops. The primary purpose of the workshops is to integrate concepts and understand them in the context of business. Course Five: 7907MGT Managing Strategically This course focuses on strategic management as a dynamic process that deals with the challenges posed by the highly turbulent and global environment of the 21st century. It is designed to sharpen students' ability to think strategically, to evaluate organisational situations from a strategic perspective and to reach sound strategic decisions. It covers the use and techniques of strategic analysis as the foundation for strategy formulation, provides an in-depth discussion of the development of strategic alternatives and presents concepts and methodologies for improving the calibre of strategy implementation and evaluation. The course will be delivered in intensive mode on the Gold Coast campus over six Saturdays. Each session will involve a review and discussion of the set readings followed by group workshops in which students will engage with a strategy-related exercise or a case study. Course Six: 7908MKT Data Decision Making Business decision making is increasingly dependent upon the decision maker s ability to prepare, analyse and interpret key business data. Business metrics are increasing in importance. This course helps us understand the fundamental characteristics and meaning of the data and information that are commonly used in business, as well as the principles of Business Intelligence. Rather than taking a dry mathematics/statistics approach to dealing with numbers, we emphasise the use and interpretation of statistical 3

4 information by critical analysis, and effective use of graphs and tables. A key pre-requisite to this analysis is the availability of reliable, complete and accurate business data. In the second part of the course students are introduced to the principles of data warehousing and data mining. In business and most other human pursuits we must deal with and communicate with data. A key part of this course is to explore the many ways that data can be sourced, stored, retrieved and presented. With such skills we can make better decisions, and help others make better decisions, and importantly avoid making costly wrong decisions. The course is presented in a seminar and workshop format that includes formal seminar lectures and workshops with supporting learning activities and discussion. There will be a total of three contact hours allocated each week for this course. inar lectures will be two hours long and will be supplemented with a laboratory workshop of one hour each week. Course Seven: 7910MGT Leadership and Communication This course provides a comprehensive contemporary overview of this leadership communication domain, covering key areas like corporate social responsibility (CSR) stakeholder leadership practices, ethics and environmental and business sustainability. Translating this conceptual knowledge into practice, the classroom is set up as a simulated organisational-environment in order to provide vocational students with the opportunity to role-play appropriate leadership communication skills, in a risk-free environment. The resulting intersection of conceptual and applied know-how will provide students with the necessary social capital to survive and thrive in an interdependent local-global world economy. Classes will be held in simulated organisational-classroom format in four hours blocks during the semester. Students will apply the content of the course to experiences they encounter in their daily work setting, linking into events that are unfolding in organisations around the globe. Course Eight: 7916MGT Human Resource Management This course concentrates on how people are managed, as a resource, and how best to leverage the great resource they provide while also behaving responsibly and ethically. The social and ethical considerations and dilemmas integral to effectively managing people are examined, including the areas of: recruitment and selection, the management of performance, workforce diversity and work-life balance. Other areas explored include how to develop and implement effective and efficient human resource practices that support the strategic objectives of organisations, such as the training and development of people. In this context, the sustainable organisation is one which can attract, hire and retain the best employees. Case material, readings, presentations and audiovisual material will be used to stimulate discussion of the important and strategic matters to be tackled by managers today and in the future. Special focus upon undertaking persuasive oral presentations will be an element of this course as part of the MBA Program. The course will be presented in seminar format in six and a half hour (Gold Coast campus) or four hour (Southbank campus) blocks. inars will be interactive and will comprise short lectures, exercises, class discussion of cases and mini-presentations by students.
