No other nonfinancial relationships exist. What is Dyslexia? Dyslexia definition, continued Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge. International Dyslexia Association, Individuals with dyslexia may also display some of the following characteristics Oral Language Learning to talk Pronouncing words Acquiring vocabulary Using age appropriate grammar Following directions Confusing before/after, right/left, etc. Learning the alphabet, nursery rhymes, or songs Understanding concepts and relationships Retrieving words or naming problems What is a Dyslexia Therapist? A dyslexia therapist is a professional who has been trained to provide phonetic, multisensory intervention for students with dyslexia and other disorders of written language. Individuals in Mississippi who complete an approved program for dyslexia therapy are eligible for educational licensure with endorsement #203. 1
2 Academic Pathways to Dyslexia Therapy Academic Pathways to Dyslexia Therapy Currently, Mississippi has two private universities with approved programs for dyslexia therapy s Dyslexia Therapy Program William Carey University s Dyslexia Therapy Training Program will be the first public university to offer a program in dyslexia therapy. Master of Education degree in Dyslexia Therapy This program has been approved by the State Institutions of Higher Learning and is pending approval from Mississippi Department of Education for educator licensure. DYSLEXIA THERAPY PROGRAM School of Education Clinton, Mississippi Kay Peterson, M.S., LDT, CALT, QI Director, Dyslexia Therapy Program Based on research in a multisensory structured presentation of the language Trains therapists to remediate students identified d with dyslexia and related disordersd Evolved from Alphabetic Phonics Supported by National and Mississippi Scottish Rite Masons Goals of the program to provide an educational experience which meets a community need and prepares participants to become Certified Academic Language Therapists to become a part of an important effort to assist students struggling with dyslexia and written-language disorders by working in a variety of settings and contexts private and clinical settings as well as private and public schools to provide participants with relevant theory and research, history, appropriate methodologies, curricular knowledge, and applied techniques Master of Education degree 30 Hour Master of Education in Dyslexia Therapy Qualified Instructor Training for Dyslexia Therapy Program may be completed following the 30 hour degree 2

4 Goals of the program To use appropriate multisensory structured language approaches to serve individuals with dyslexia and related disorders To implement scientifically-based multisensory reading strategies based on the five areas of reading instruction outlined by the National Reading Panel in one-on-one or group settings.
