3 Welcome to the Professional Development for Educators Catalog, featuring programs and courses offered by Cardinal Stritch University through the Office of Professional Development and Licensure in the College of Education and Leadership. Our catalog is arranged so that courses are listed by curricular area making it easier for you to locate the specific educational topic you are interested in studying. To register for the courses in this catalog, please follow the registration directions on page 2, unless otherwise directed within the course description. If you are unable to find the topic you are looking for, or if you have questions about registration, do not hesitate to contact us. We offer a comprehensive and inclusive approach to the professional development of educators by providing access to graduate-level professional development opportunities through a variety of formats including online courses offered by our partner vendor as well as face-to-face courses facilitated by Cardinal Stritch University faculty. All courses offered are approved for Cardinal Stritch University graduate credit and are applicable for Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) license renewal. 4 Registration Procedures - How to Register To register for any of the courses listed in this catalog, unless otherwise directed within the course description, please contact the Professional Development and Licensure Department for more information. Each course description includes the amount of credits, the partnering company (if applicable), and the location of the course and the cost of the course. Tuition Fees and Discounts The cost of each course is listed at the end of the course description and will vary depending on the partnering organization that offers the course, as well as the number of credits the course is worth. Location Definitions Off-campus The course is held at a location outside of the Stritch campus. Details will be given with the course description. On-campus The course is held on the Stritch campus. Details will be given within the course description. Facilitated Online The course is offered through facilitated online meetings. 5 Online Educator DPI Endorsement Courses - In April of 2009 the governor signed into law a bill that requires that teachers in Wisconsin, teaching online after July 1, 2010, must be certified in their area of instruction and must have completed 30 hours of professional development specifically preparing them to teach online. Earn the Online Endorsement - Required to Teach K-12 Students Online! Wisconsin educators teaching K-12 students online must complete 30 hours of professional development designed to prepare them to teach online. Cardinal Stritch University has prepared the necessary courses to address the requirements of the DPI endorsement as an online instructor. To register and earn a Cardinal Stritch University online teaching endorsement: Students must receive department/instructor approval prior to registering Students must successfully complete both one credit courses, in order (CEDO 501, then CED 502), to receive the Online Educator Endorsement. The workshops are currently priced at $250 each and run for 3-weeks each. 6 Online Educator DPI Endorsement Courses, continued - Succeeding in Online Learning, CEDO 501 Optional 1 graduate credit This course focuses on current computer and web-based tools and the development of skills needed to succeed in online learning. Even experienced computer users may not be aware of some of the new collaborative tools used in online learning. The intent of this course is to provide a common skill set and knowledge base for all members of the cohort. Location: Facilitated Online. Cost: $250. Teaching and Learning Online, CED 502 Optional 1 graduate credit This course will help you gain first-hand experience as an online-learner. Location: Facilitated Online. Cost: $250. You will: Experience the online learning environment from a student perspective, Explore available tools and software, Learn to plan, design and incorporate appropriate active and engaging instructional strategies and valid and reliable assessments, Learn and apply concepts and techniques that make us effective online facilitators and learners, Discuss how to model and encourage legal, ethical, safe and healthy online behavior, and Explore how the needs of special needs students can be addressed online. Prerequisites: Students should have access to personal computers with audio/video capabilities, their own or organizational. Access includes the ability to open and examine interior components. 7 Assessment - Assessment and Intervention for Struggling Readers, Grades K-6, CEDUC 626 This course helps teachers to better understand students who struggle with reading and gives them the tools to improve their students fluency and comprehension in order to meet grade-level standards. You will define and describe the characteristics of a struggling reader, identify a particular student who fits that description, examine that student s needs, and implement research-based instructional strategies to improve fluency and comprehension in struggling readers. Classroom Assessment for Today s Teacher K - 12, CEDUC 635 This course focuses on three important areas of assessment: grading, authentic assessment techniques, and Response to Intervention (RTI). While studying each of these areas of assessment, participants will identify common problems and obstacles classroom teachers face in each of these categories, and subsequent ways to address or overcome these issues. Participants will also apply research-based grading, authentic assessment, and RTI strategies to their particular teaching situation. Location: Online Distance Learning. Provider: Teachscape. Brain-Based Learning - The Thinking and Learning Brain, CEDUC 646 This course focuses on the latest research in the domains of neuroscience and cognitive psychology. Participants examine the classroom implications of understanding how the brain learns. Key topics of each domain are explored, such as memory, cognition, language development, gender differences, and the emotional aspects of learning. Participants apply brain-compatible strategies to improve student achievement, to increase student motivation and engagement, and to create a supportive learning environment. 8 Classroom Management - Instructional Design, Grades K-12, CEDUC 620 This course establishes a comprehensive way to engage in unit planning and instructional design. You will integrate assessment into your planning and create a sequence of learning experiences that logically and meaningfully help students meet required learning goals while aligning your instructional design with state and local standards. Meeting the Needs of All Students, Grades K-12, CEDUC 619 This course focuses on differentiation strategies in instructional planning and organizing for meeting the needs of students in the mixed-ability classroom. The course gives careful consideration to the different ways students acquire and process information and will help you develop products to show what they have learned. Student-Directed Learning to Foster Motivation and Engagement, CEDUC 634 This course provides an overview of the theoretical background and practical applications of motivation and engagement. It supports the pursuit of developing true teacher leaders by supplying a framework from which educators can reflect upon their students and devise strategies to increase motivation and learning. Participants will explore project-based and problem-based learning, two student-centered learning structures that require students to engage in high-interest yet challenging tasks. Understanding Teaching and Learning, Grades K-12, CEDUC 621 This course focuses on the intricacies of how people learn and establishes the firm foundation necessary to make intelligent decisions about the types of teaching strategies and instructional plans utilized in your classroom. 9 Literacy - Assessment and Intervention for Struggling Readers, Grades K-6, CEDUC 626 (See Assessment) Foundations of Reading and Literacy K-6, CEDUC 545 This course focuses on sound theories and principles for developing literacy skills in students. It provides participants with a comprehensive knowledge base in the reading process and the most effective instructional techniques for teaching students to read. Increase understanding of the five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Apply the most effective instructional strategies to improve students skills in the five components of reading. Reading in the Content Areas, CEDUC 627 This course focuses on ways to integrate effective reading strategies into all subject areas of the curriculum. You will employ proven instructional strategies to engage all learners, including struggling readers, through the reading of informational texts. You will also develop subject-area vocabulary that aides in the comprehension of content-specific material and utilize established techniques to help students make connections to prior learning. As you learn how to identify, define, and explain all stages of the writing process, you will be provided with proven techniques to help your students integrate writing into all subject areas. You will create learning experiences in which students respond to literature throughout reading; employ the use of writing portfolios to measure the growth of writing ability over time; and examine ways (such as mini-lessons, error analysis, and conferencing) to support the independence of reading and writing in the classroom. 10 Mathematics - Algebra for Elementary Students, Grades K-5, MTTS 557 This course focuses on developing basic algebraic thinking for elementary-school students. You will deepen your understanding of patterns, functions, and algebraic symbols; analyze repeating and growing patterns and represent these patterns in words, pictures, and numbers; and express mathematical relationships using equations. Algebra for Middle-Level Students, Grades 6-8, MTTS 550 This course focuses on developing advanced algebraic thinking, including studying patterns and functions, understanding the structure of the number system, using symbolism meaningfully, and employing mathematical modeling to solve problems. You will examine common misconceptions about learning algebra in order to better understand gaps in student comprehension; identify functions as linear or nonlinear and contrast their properties using tables, graphs, and equations; and model and solve contextualized problems using tables, graphs, and equations. Data Analysis and Probability for Elementary Students, Grades K-5, MTTS 558 This course is structured around the creation and completion of a real-life data analysis project that allows you to apply knowledge and skills from other mathematical strands. You will design an investigation to address a question and consider how data-collection methods affect the nature of the data set; use measures of center, especially the median, and understand what each does and does not indicate about a data set; and propose and justify conclusions and predictions that are based on data. Data Analysis and Probability for Middle-Level Students, Grades 6-8, MTTS 551 This course is structured around the creation and completion of a real-life data analysis project that allows you to apply knowledge and skills from other mathematical strands. You will design an investigation that includes data collection and data analysis; select, create, and use appropriate graphical representations of data; and find, use, and interpret measures of center and spread. 11 Mathematics, continued - Measurement and Geometry for Middle-Level Students, Grades 6-8, MTTS 552 This course covers the Van Hiele levels of geometric thought focusing on shapes and properties, transformations, location, and visualization, as well as measurement concepts and skills. You will apply effective problem-solving strategies to real-world problems; deepen your understanding of mathematical concepts such as volume and capacity, similarity and congruence, and solving problems with ratios and proportions; and apply instructional strategies that help develop geometric thinking. Problem Solving and Number Operations for Elementary Students K 5, MTTS 559 This course establishes a foundation of mathematical content knowledge and problem-solving skills, and provides strategies for developing strong number sense in students. You will deepen personal understanding of mathematical content found in elementary grades, such as place value, the operations, fractions, decimals, and percents; develop strategies to teach in a problem-based classroom; and engage in and learn ways to lead mathematical discourse. Proportional Reasoning in the Middle Grades, Grades 6-8, MTTS 553 This course examines key mathematical ideas related to helping middle-school students develop proportional reasoning. You will deepen your understanding of ratio and proportion and how they are applied in measurement and geometry; discover ways to improve instructional planning before, during, and after mathematics lessons; and learn ways to model proportional thinking and apply concepts to realworld problems. 12 Science Social Studies/History - Inquiry-Based Science, CEDUC 654 This course is designed to teach scientific process skills and help teachers create engaging, hands-on science lessons. Participants learn to leverage the strength of inquiry-based science instruction to help their students develop deeper understanding of key earth science concepts. The course is designed around a constructivist learning model called the Five E s: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. Wisconsin Education Innovations (WEI) - In partnership with Cardinal Stritch University and business and community leaders, Wisconsin Education Innovations (WEI) offers sustained and high-quality professional development for educators and parents in the greater Milwaukee area. Wisconsin Education Innovations offers learning academies/workshops, classroom support, coaching and customized services to schools, districts and parents throughout the school year and in the summer. 13 Programs for Administrators and School Leaders - The Principal Induction Program The Principal Induction Program from Cardinal Stritch University s Leadership Center is designed for brand-new principals and for those new to their districts. The content is designed to promote and build leadership in a culture of change - a topic needed by all administrators, new and veteran alike. In pairing veteran principals with new principals or assistant principals, the Leadership Center provides newer administrators sustainable support in workshops and one-on-one coaching between seminars. Facilitated by Stritch faculty and current principals, our work includes coaching training for our mentors as well as best practices and just-in-time learning for newer principals. Fostering sustainable relationships among veteran and new principals creates an advocacy for purposeful school administrators. The year-long design for the program involves five seminars for both new and veteran principals as well as embedded coaching meetings between mentors and mentees. The workshop meets for five full Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Stritch s City Center campus. How can you as a team or organizational leader unleash the talent around you? How can you build your organization s capacity to adapt and thrive in challenging times? Coaching as a leadership strategy increases teamwork and collaboration, boosts productivity, and improves employee engagement and retention. Through the Coaching for Leaders Certificate Program, you will: Recognize the value of coaching as a leadership practice Learn how to guide employees to greater levels of performance Apply coaching techniques in simulated and real life situations Receive personal coaching from a Master Certified Coach This program integrates best practices from Jim Collins, Robert Marzano, Michael Fullan, Ronald Heifetz and others. The program aligns with International Coach Federation (ICF) standards and satisfies the requirements for ICF membership eligibility. The program is designed for teachers and administrators interested in supporting beginning teachers through mentoring. The program includes formal academic study and workshop training that provides research, theoretical, and practical base for mentoring. Master s Degree Programs (for licensed teachers) Master of Science (M.S.) in Educational Leadership The M.S. in Educational Leadership degree program is designed for educators who want to expand their leadership knowledge and skills to serve in formal or informal leadership roles in schools. The program leads to Wisconsin administrative licensure as Principal and Director of Instruction. Offered in a face-toface format at locations throughout Wisconsin, as well as an online format. Master of Science (M.S.) in Educational Leadership: Professional Learning The M.S. in Educational Leadership: Professional Learning degree program, in partnership with the Southeastern Wisconsin New Teachers Project, is designed for educators who want to remain in the classroom while building leadership capacity and contributing to school improvement through mentoring/coaching peers, instructional improvement, and curriculum development. Offered in a face-toface format in the Milwaukee area. Master of Education (M.E.) in Teaching, Learning and Leadership The M.E. in Teaching, Learning and Leadership degree program is designed for K-12 teachers or adult educators who have the desire to improve student learning and achievement. Upon completion, individuals will have established the foundation for obtaining either Professional Educator or Master Educator licensure under Wisconsin s re-licensure rules. Offered in an online format. Master of Education (M.E.) in Instructional Technology The M.E. in Instructional Technology degree program enables K-12 teachers to develop life-long skills in digital technology and to integrate technology into the curriculum and support classroom learning. Offered in an online format. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Literacy and English as a Second Language The M.A. in Literacy and English as a Second Language degree program offers teachers the skills and knowledge to not only understand the process of second language acquisition, but also the specific skills needed to promote the academic and literacy development for English-language learners. The program leads to both Reading Teacher and ESL licensure. Offered in a face-to-face format in the Milwaukee area. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Special Education (extended certification) The M.A. in Special Education (extended certification) degree program is designed for licensed teachers who have completed an initial certification program in education, and leads to the Wisconsin Cross- Categorical Special Education teaching license. Offered in a face-to-face format in the Milwaukee area, as well as online. 16

17 Degree Programs, continued - Master of Arts (M.A.) in Language and Literacy* The M.A. in Language and Literacy degree program is designed for teachers who want to learn more about literacy, refine their teaching skills, and become master literacy educators. Upon completion, individuals will be qualified to apply for dual licensure as a reading teacher and a reading specialist. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Literacy and Learning Disabilities* The M.A. in Literacy and Learning Disabilities degree program is designed for teachers who want to learn more about literacy and special education, refine their teaching skills, and become master literacy and learning disability teachers. The program leads to dual licensure as a reading teacher and a learning disabilities teacher. *These programs are offered in a face-to-face format in the Milwaukee and Madison areas, depending on sufficient student interest. All students interested in these programs begin in the Reading Teacher (316) licensure program. Extended Certification and Licensure Programs (for licensed teachers) Stritch offers an array of extended certification and licensure programs for licensed teachers including: Regular Education Reading Teacher Instructional Technology Coordinator Reading Specialist Library Media Specialist Special Education Principal Director of Special Education and Pupil Services10 Bilingual Education Director of Instruction District Administrator Become a Teacher Programs (Post-Baccalaureate Certification) Interested students must have already earned a bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Teaching The M.A. in Teaching program is a teaching certification program designed for the returning adult student. This graduate-level program offers teacher certification in grades PreK-6, 1-8, or 6-12 education for individuals interested in making a career change. Offered in a face-to-face format in Milwaukee, Madison and Kenosha. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Special Education (initial certification) The M.A. in Special Education (initial certification) program is designed for individuals who want to pursue certification in cross-categorical special education and work with students with special needs. Individuals will have developmental field experiences and will demonstrate the content knowledge, pedagogy, and dispositions to be a successful special education teacher. Offered in a face-to-face format in Milwaukee. 17

18 Degree Programs, continued - Master of Arts (M.A.) in Inclusive Education (initial certification) The M.A. in Inclusive Education (initial certification) program combines coursework in elementary/middle education and special education, which also leads to increased marketability for candidates. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) requirements for licensure and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) standards are the foundations of the program. Upon program completion, candidates are able to work as either a regular classroom teacher or as a special education teacher. Offered in a face-to-face format in Milwaukee, Madison and Kenosha. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Urban Education The M.A. in Urban Education program is an initial teaching program designed for individuals who have a passion for working in an urban classroom setting. Library media specialists serve as leaders in integrating technology into the curriculum while coordinating students mastery of the library media skills as required by the state. The LMS program requires a total of 24 credits plus field experiences in both elementary and secondary school instructional media centers, which may be accommodated at your workplace.
