1 Course Title: General Psychology Hermantown High School CIS Psychology Course Syllabus This course is in conjunction with Lake Superior College Course Number: Psychology 1120 Credits: 3 Instructor: Karen Brandt E Mail Address: Prerequisites: Application/Consent of Instructor. Catalog Description: This is an introduction to the science of human behavior. This course is taught with the emphasis on student participation. Important topics of study include: humor, stress and conflict, social influences, research methods, developmental theories, the brain and nervous system, nature and nurture issues, maturation, emotion, perception, personality theories and psychological disorders. It encompasses a broad area of research about human behavior, information that should be available to all high school students who want to understand themselves and others better. The goal of this course is to create active intellectual and emotional involvement by the student, not only in learning about the science of psychology, but in life as well. Course Outcomes: By the conclusion of the class, students will be able to: Define psychology; explain the history and present day approaches Explain and give examples of the research methods used in psychology Explain the human central nervous system and endocrine systems and explain how these affect human behavior and emotions Understand and explain different states of consciousness, such as sleep, dreams, meditation, and therapeutic uses of hypnosis Describe the value of eyewitness testimony, and the current controversy regarding recovered memories. Examine what intelligence is, multiple intelligences, emotional quotient, motivation, and creativity and be able to apply them to yourself Examine how gender plays a role in personality development and be able to explain how nature and nurture define our personalities Explain and be able to describe the major theories of personality List and explain the various types of psychological disorders Examine and judge the effectiveness of various psychological and biological therapies Examine and explain the current research of factors influencing relationships such as attitudes, conformity, compliance and control, aggression and violence with an emphasis on gender and culture Design, review college level research and write at the college level a paper reporting your results

2 Grading Criteria: A = 90% to 100% B = 80% to 89% C = 70% to 79% D = 60% to 69% Fail = less than 60% LSC does not accept + and, thus the above grading scale is your college grade. Your high school grades do have + and thus the breakdown is as follows: A = 94% to 100% A = 90% to 93.9% B+ = 87% to 89.9% B = 84% to 86.9% B = 80% to 83.9% C+ = 77% to 79.9% C = 74% to 76.9% C = 70% to 73.9% D+ = 67% to 69.9% D = 64% to 66.9% D = 60% to 63.9% Fail = less than 60% Evaluation Techniques: You will be evaluated using tests, quizzes, class participation, assignments and the research project. I grade on total points, so if tests are not your strong point make sure you do all assignments. I have built into the grading process a variety of assessments both traditional and alternative projects. Motivation, Study Habits and Testing Probably the most important aspect for you to master in this class is finding a reason to be here. It can't just be any reason to be here, however; it must be an intrinsic reason to be here. What does "intrinsic" mean? It doesn't mean you signed up for this class because it "looked good on the schedule, and besides, a friend told me it's the easiest social science class to take." OR "it really fits my schedule." OR "the textbook had a nice cover" etc. An intrinsic reason means you find an internal, passionate reason to make this class meaningful to your life. "I care passionately about other people; I love learning about what makes people tick; I want to understand how a person living in America is so different than a person who lives else where; I want to know what all this talk about nature vs. nurture is; I want to learn about myself "... all these statements are intrinsic reasons to be in this class. Find one for yourself. If you can't find one, find another class that's right for you. You simply won't enjoy coming to this class each week, or reading

3 the textbook before class and after class, and studying throughout the semester if you are not motivated. Finally, you simply won't be successful in this class because you're not motivated to be here in the first place. Regarding good study habits, which is also critical for your success: First, no miracles happen in this class. That is, you certainly won't succeed in this course just by coming to class and listening to lectures without a concerted effort outside of class. Here are some good study habits: Read the textbook before class; come to class every single time; read the textbook again after class; think about the lecture material outside of class; interact in class as much as possible, even if you are shy; study in class by listening carefully to the lecture, and take good notes that mean something to you. These all are good study habits and I'm sure you have others to add to this list. Likewise, bring something to class besides your pencil, namely something inside your brain regarding the topic your own questions about the topic, a general knowledge about the topic, personal experiences, etc. Then you can really begin the process of learning rather than simply being there. But many students study hard for the test and still mess up somehow. What can you do to improve your test scores? Here are some test taking skills: The most obvious way to succeed on a test is to test yourself ahead of time. You might try doing this with a friend and classmate after you read the textbook. It's proven that people who study together do much better on test. When reading a multiple choice question, think about the answer before you read the selection; then go straight for the answer. Don't let the distracting answers mess you up. If you know the answers, it's there. For true and false questions, just read the statement to see if it makes sense in its entirety, and if it does make complete sense, then mark true. If there is anything wrong with it, then mark false. It's that simple. There are no trick questions, just questions that are more detailed than others. Take your time because "haste makes waste." The majority of people fail on their first exam much worse than they ever imagined because they carelessly read the exam questions. Often they kick themselves afterwards because they made the dumbest mistakes. Remember, "The devil is in the details," and you must know the details when coming into a test. Keep in mind these questions are designed to sort out the average from the aboveaverage student. Quite often the exam questions are not going to be as easy as they appear. Usually there is one answer that's ludicrous, one answer that is probably wrong, and then at least two answers that are very close. If you know the right answer beforehand, then it should be obvious.

4 ATTENDANCE: This is a college course. You get high school credit simultaneously with three college credits. As a college course, there are expectations for attendance and participation that are higher than typical high school expectations. Many of the high school teachers that teach CIS courses have established an attendance system that is fair to students and still holds you accountable for being in class. Your grade will be lowered one level ( B to C ) for each absence beyond six per quarter. You must now take responsibility for your choices. Any personal obligations, such as medical appointments, talks with college reps, volunteer work, etc., should never be scheduled during this time. Remember, this is not a high school course, rather a college course in the high school. If you are frequently absent from school, due to school related events or not, this is not the class for you. ACADEMIC HONESTY AND INTEGRITY: All students are expected to maintain academic honesty and integrity as students by doing their own work to the best of their ability. Academic dishonesty (cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, etc.) will result in the student receiving a zero for that test, assignment, or paper. At this level my expectations are high and I believe you can reach them. MAKE UP WORK: It is important that you assume full responsibility for finding out what work you have missed and getting it handed in. If you can get the assignments from a peer during the absence, so much the better. SEE ME BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL MORE IMPORTANTLY ASK A PEER FOR THE PLAY BY PLAY (NOTES) FROM THE DAY YOU MISSED AND THEN GET THE HANDOUTS FROM THE BASKET IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM BEFORE THE CLASS BEGINS THIS IS IMPORTANT SO YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN CLASS. I will let students know on an assignment to assignment basis if late work will or will not be accepted. Generally articles that need to be read and addressed will not be accepted late because the only way to have a discussion and participate is to be prepared. Take home tests will not be accepted late because I tend to give ample time to complete if you choose not to do it you pay the price!
