1 Texas State Technical College COURSE SYLLABUS PSYC 2301 GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY INSTRUCTOR: Kathy L. Lanoy CELL: COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION General Psychology is a survey of subjects key to the understanding of psychology. As such, it introduces the study of behavior and any factors determining and affecting behavior. COURSE INTRODUCTION: Psychology is the discipline where the focus is on humans thoughts and behavior. As a general course, most students never realize the impact that the two (thoughts and behavior) have on one another. In everything that humans say, do, and experience, lives are touched. With this in mind, this course intends to create a greater personal awareness of its impact on humans lives from personal, social, cultural, and global aspects. PRIMARY COURSE REQUIREMENTS: This course includes ten modules addressed through lectures and through a variety of assignments and assessments. At the instructor s discretion, the remaining modules may be the subjects of projects such as research projects and power point presentations. Due dates will be listed within the syllabus and online at Moodle. LEARNING OBJECTIVES (OUTCOMES): Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify various research methods and their characteristics used in the scientific study of psychology. 2. Describe the historical influences and early schools of thought that shaped the field of psychology. 3. Describe some of the prominent perspectives and approaches used in the study of psychology. 4. Use terminology unique to the study of psychology. 5. Describe accepted approaches and standards in psychological assessment and evaluation. 6. Identify factors in physiological and psychological processes involved in human behavior. CORE OBJECTIVES (OUTCOMES): 1. Critical Thinking (CT) Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, inquiring analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts, and constructing solutions. 2. Communication Skills (CS)

2 Students will demonstrate effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral, and visual communication. 3. Empirical and Quantitative Skills (EQS) Students will demonstrate the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal. 4. Social Responsibility (SR) Students will demonstrate intercultural competency and civic knowledge by engaging effectively in local, regional, national, and global communities. ASSIGNED READINGS FOR COURSE: Students will be responsible for readings that come from the required textbook and any additional readings associated with weekly lectures discussions and assignments. ASSESSMENT TYPES: Assessment for this course comes in a variety of forms, but their shared intent is to assess students ability to comprehend content knowledge related to lifespan development and to apply to self personally and professionally and to real-life situations. Following is an explanation of each: Class Activities Chapter Summaries and s Self-Activities Reflective Essays Professional Resources Assignments Annotated Bibliography & Working Bibliography General Psychology Critical Application Assignment (Plus) ACTIVITY TYPES: Activities related to the session s presentation serve two purposes. The first is to create an interactive learning community where students listen to, share with, respond to, and learn from one another. The second is the capability to reinforce students comprehension of content knowledge related to the discipline of psychology and to apply such content knowledge to shared observations and experiences. These correlate closely with assessments and discussions. Following are examples of activities: Personal Reflections on Session s Presentation Paired Students Interactive Discussion on Session s Presentation Small Group Case Study Paired Students/Small Group Library Quest DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: Discussion questions arise from each session s presentation. These relate to the chapter presented by application to students personal experiences and knowledge of real-life experiences. All students are

3 responsible for active listening, sharing, and interacting, while correlating with the session s presentation and in-class activities. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Plotnik, R. & Kouyoumdjian, H. (2014). ISBN No.#: GRADING CRITERIA: Final grades will be based on a variety of assessments: Attendance = 120 points Participation (Discussion) = 120 Points Class Activities = 200 Points (10 Points x 20) Summaries & s = 200 Points (10 Points x 20) Self-Activities = 300 Points (15 Points x 20) Reflective Essays = 220 Points (20 Points x 11) Professional Resources Assignments = 360 Points (25 Points x 11) Annotated Bibliography & Working Bibliography = 100 Points General Psychology Critical Application Assignment = 100 Points LATE PENALTIES: 10 Points = ½ point per week 15 Points = ½ point per week 20 Points = 1 point per week 20 Points = 1 point per week 100 Points = 2 points per week GRADING SCALE: A = B = C = D = F = 0-59 COURSE POLICIES: 1. Regular and punctual attendance to EVERY class is expected. After the 12th class day (hour), the student is responsible for withdrawing from the course; otherwise, a grade of F will be assigned to the student at the end of the course. 2. The use of electronic devices of any kind WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Save the entertainment for hours before and/or after the class. As for texting and/or making or taking calls, do so out of the

4 auditorium. Such use is an unwelcome interruption to others in the class and definitely a sign of disrespect. Disobedience of this police after a warning will result in the student s removal from the auditorium (without credit for attendance or assignments or activities due or done on that specific day). Continued disobedience of this policy will lead to permanent removal from the course. This action will be at the discretion of the instructor. If it does occur, the student will be responsible for withdrawing from the course before the official last drop (pass) day. Otherwise, a grade of F will be assigned to the student at the end of the course. 3. Electronic devices to be used for note-taking only will be permitted. Have them fully charged for class, for absolutely no cords will block the walkways. If the device dies, exercise the hand. The safety of everyone in this auditorium is of the utmost importance. 4. It is the responsibility of the STUDENT, not the instructor, to see the instructor concerning missed assignments, and it is at the discretion of the instructor that missed assignments will be scheduled to be accepted. Absences must be due to a personal illness or emergency and approved by the instructor. Telephone calls to the department or the instructor do not make the absences excused ones. It is recommended to meet with the instructor at the next class and to volunteer documentation (written by an appropriate authority) or explanation of any absence. 5. Do see the instructor concerning any missed assignments immediately after the absence. This means the first hour of the next scheduled class. If the instructor agrees to schedule the missing assignment, the deadline is the deadline. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS! ACADEMIC DISHONESTY STATEMENT: Academic honesty is fundamental to the activities and principles of an educational institution. All members of the academic community must be confident that each individual s work has been responsibly and honorably required, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students is dishonest, whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards academic dishonesty as an extremely serious matter, with serious consequences that range from probation to expulsion. When in doubt about plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, or collaboration, consult the course instructor and/or the University s student handbook. Academic dishonesty includes but is not necessarily limited to the following: Cheating or knowingly assisting another student in committing an act of cheating or academic dishonesty; Presenting work taken from another author, source, and/or student without due credit. Instructors are professionals who are trained to recognize plagiarism. Normally, it is very evident through complexity of subject, style, structure, word choice, et cetera. As well, instructors utilize available sources to verify an assignment s authenticity. Intellectual honesty is fundamental to scholarship. Accordingly, the University views plagiarism or cheating of any kind in academic work as among the most serious offenses that a student can commit. Academic dishonesty can result in a grade of F or 0 for the particular test or assignment involved. A student wishing to contest this ruling must do so within one (1) week of graded papers.

When an emergency alarm is activated, students should immediately leave the classroom, exit the building, and go to a designated safe area until clearance is given to go back into the building. Students should also register and be familiar with the Emergency Notification System.
