Frequently Asked Questions What is the purpose and format of the test? The Kaplan Admission Test (KAT) is a pre-entry test used to evaluate the academic preparedness of students entering the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (General & Cardiac tracks), LPN to RN Bridge, Practical Nursing, Radiation Therapy Technology, or Registered Nursing Program. The KAT consists of a total of 91 questions in four subtest areas: Math, Science, Writing, and Reading. 1. The Math section measures conversions, operations, ratios, and word problems (28 questions) The Science section tests knowledge of physiology (20 questions) 2. The Writing section measures the essential skills of assessing: passage development, paragraph logic, and mechanics of writing (21 questions) 3. The Reading section covers passage logic, comprehension, inferences, and passage purpose (22 questions) How will I receive my test scores? Test scores will be available immediately following the test. If you are taking the KAT at another institution, please have Kaplan transfer your scores to College of Southern Nevada, Limited Entry Department, WCK 206. When can I retest? Applicants who fail to establish the minimum cut-off score in each area will be required to retake the entire exam. There must be a minimum of three (3) months between test dates. Each test is considered a combined complete entity. There will be NO combination of scores from separate tests. Kaplan test results are valid for five (5) years. NOTE: Students who have taken the TEAS 5.0 version and received passing scores are eligible to apply for a limited entry program. These results are valid until further notice. PLEASE BRING (2) #2 PENCILS. THANK YOU. KAPLAN Admission Test (KAT) PROCESS: 1. Complete the attached Registration Form (see last page). 2. Bring the completed Registration Form Nursing Program Testing Office on the Charleston Campus in Building K, Room K206Q (on the 2nd floor) between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. 3. You will not be permitted to register on the day of examination. Your registration form MUST reach the Nursing Program Testing Office no later than the Monday prior to your selected test date. 4. You will receive an Examination Permit once your completed registration form and it is processed by the Nursing Program Testing Office. 5. You will not be admitted to the exam without an Examination Permit. If it is not possible to schedule the examination on the date you requested, because the capacity of the testing room has been reached, you will be provided the next possible vacancy exam date. 6. What if I want/need to reschedule the date of my examination? To reschedule an exam, you must contact the Nursing Program Testing Office no later than the Monday prior to your scheduled exam date. 7. What if I miss my scheduled exam date? If you miss your scheduled exam date your exam fee will be forfeited and you must restart the registration process from the beginning. This includes paying the fee and scheduling another exam date.
TAKING THE EXAM Be sure to bring your Examination Permit, two number 2 pencils, and two forms of identification. One form must be photo identification, such as a driver s license, state issued ID card, military ID, or passport. You will not be admitted into the examination room without a photo ID and the Examination Permit. Plan to arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes before the time indicated on your Examination Permit. You will not be admitted into the exam session if you arrive late. The examination session will last approximately 3 hours. Giving, receiving, or exchanging information while the examination is in progress is not permitted under any circumstances. Examinees are not permitted to review study material and/or notes of any kind during the examination. The following items are prohibited from the examination room: any food, drink, candy, or gum books or notes of any kind sunglasses, hats, or any jackets with hoods cell phones, pages, beeper, or PDA headsets, ear plugs, ipods, or any other form of media player CALCULATORS (You cannot bring your own calculator, however, the tesing program includes a calculator.) recording or listening devices all watches mechanical pencils, rules, side rules, or compasses purses, backpacks, computer bags, satchels, etc. The examiner has the authority to terminate an exam for any individual who does not adhere to the above rules.
SPECIAL TESTING ARRANGEMENTS If a physical handicap or learning disability prevents you from taking the Admission Examination under standard conditions, contact the Nursing Program Testing Office to request special testing arrangements. You must provide documentation of your disability. This documentation must include one of the following: A statement from a representative of your educational institution indicating that you have received special testing accommodation within the past three years. Documentation of an evaluation by a state-licensed professional qualified to diagnose your particular disability. This evaluation must have been made within the past three years, and must include information about the licensing and credentials of the evaluator as well as well as the procedure used to diagnose the disability. Your performance report will indicate that you took the examination under nonstandard conditions.
