Choose your HD format In terms of image resolution High Definition video technology has been established in the field of Minimally Invasive Surgery. A switch from the classic 5:4 monitor format to the latest 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen monitors is ongoing. Thus customers find different HD video formats on the market, each with individual benefits and pitfalls for endoscopic imaging. The LEMKE cameras are offer them all, therefore all users are free to select their personally preferred format. 16:9 5:4 16:10 1080p/1080i 1920 x 1080 pixels Medical-HD 1280 x 1024 pixels WUXGA 1920 x 1200 pixels 16:9 format with the highest impact on the video market HD video standards 1080p and 1080i Full HD, Real HD or 1080p are all synonyms for the 16:9 HD format with the highest impact on the video market. Basic requirements for 1080p are an image resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and the video mode progressive scan. 1080p is the native resolution of large medical grade HD monitors sized 32 and larger. 5:4 the ideal video format for Minimally Invasive Surgery Medical-HD uses a 5:4 aspect ratio and takes into account that endoscopes transmit circular images from the inside of the body. Therefore, it is the ideal format for MIS surgery thus displaying approximately 44 percentage more data of the endoscopic view inside the body than the existing 16:9 HD widescreen formats (further information: www.medical-hd.com). 16:10 best format for latest medical grade monitors HD video standard WUXGA (1920 x 1200 pixels): This format is the video standard with the highest resolution provided by the HDC407 and HDC907. Currently it is the ideal 16:10 video standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery, because latest medical grade widescreen monitors (23, 24, 26 ) use WUXGA as their native resolution. 6

Video modes The HDC407/HDC907 supports both 1080p and 1080i. Progressive scan (p) is a method transmitting moving images in which all the lines of each frame are drawn in sequence. Benefits of this technology are higher vertical resolution video images. It is the ideal mode for LCD monitors, but unfortunately not supported by current HD capture systems, which are limited to 1080i. With the interlace (i) technology only every second horizontal line per frame is transmitted. Two serial complementary images in sequence deliver the necessary visual information needed for a complete video image. Pitfalls of this technology are several interlaced effects, e.g. motion artifacts, interline twitter and blurring. Light Counts Lemke s new LED320 is a high-brightness single white light LED light source for minimally invasive surgery. It s lumen output surpasses 180W Xenon light sources. Due to its extremely long life expectancy (up to 10 years) the cost intensive bulb replacements as known from Xenon light sources are no longer necessary. The LED320 exceeds the light output of 180W xenon light sources without emitting UV or IR light. This leads to less heat transmission to the endoscope and reduces the risk of burning tissue. Additional advantages of the LED320 are the uniformly distributed illumination and the bright and more homogeneous light spot. The LED320 is instantly ready for use as no warm up or cool down is necessary. The universal light cable adapter enables the use of light cables from different manufacturers. LEMKE s new LED320 has not only reduced the need for service while increasing performance, additionally it also contributes to saving the environment as no Lead (Pb) or Mercury (Hg) is used. 12
