Business-centric Storage FUJITSU Storage ETERNUS CS800 Data Protection Appliance The easy solution for backup to disk with deduplication

If you rethink your backup strategy, then think of ETERNUS CS800 The regular backup of data is an important and often challenging task in day-to-day business. It is hard to imagine what would really happen if business data were lost or corrupted. Furthermore, high availability is often not sufficiently secure and cannot serve as a viable alternative to data backup. If an enterprise is rethinking its backup strategy, it must take into account all of the challenges it wants to meet with this strategy. It is not just a question of how a system is backed up, but also of how fast and easy data recovery is. And what about the quality of the restored data? Sometimes more than just the current data may be required, meaning that older files need to be restored as well. This leads to another problem: How long can old versions remain backed up before the available storage capacity is exceeded? As the volume of data in most enterprises increases, the backup windows shrink, so that you eventually do not have any chance of completing a full backup. Incremental backups or backups of only selected data are the consequence. Whatʼs more, a backup strategy becomes more complex if two or more backup sites are involved. Developing a central and flexible backup concept is then extremely difficult. For example, what happens when the data volume at one site exceeds the capacity of the data that can be transmitted within a defined backup window? The collection of all data in one central data center becomes impossible, and data cannot be replicated at a second site to improve high availability. For enterprises disk backup is an efficient alternative to tape because it supports fast backup and recovery processes. Unfortunately, disk backup is more expensive than tape. This is where deduplication technology can play a key role in optimizing disk-based backup and restore. Deduplication drastically reduces the amount of data that is stored on the disk. And this improves the options for full backups. Furthermore, deduplicated data can be replicated at a second site much faster, more secure and at much lower bandwidth requirements. Business-centric Storage Business-centric means allocating storage resources for data protection according to business priorities: To fulfill the right levels in terms of speed, capacity and data availability, and at the same time to minimize investments and the total cost of ownership. Fujitsu supports customers in making data backup and recovery much easier by offering the ETERNUS CS800 Data Protection Appliance. 2

FUJITSU storage ETERNUS CS800 is the genuine storage guardian, assuring that your backup data is kept safe and free of duplicates. It combines fast and simultaneous backup and restore from disk with advanced deduplication technology and secure replication and drastically reduces complexity. ETERNUS CS800 makes backup and recovery more efficient: Easy to use: Turnkey appliance for backup to disk. ETERNUS CS800 is ready to use right out of the box, automated deduplication and replication included. Deduplication is the key: Up to 95% less disk capacity required for data backup giving time for more full backups and fast restores even of older data. Data replication for more security: Perfect for distributed backup scenarios, with automated, secure data replication to another location. Increased efficiency: Simultaneous disk access ensures that data backup and recovery is possible at the same time. Automated disaster protection: The backup and replication process is automated no administrator intervention is necessary. Integration of tapes: Tapes are valuable long-term storage media. ETERNUS CS800 can copy data directly to an attached tape library without any load on the backup server. Cloud-readiness: Multitenancy capabilities enable cloud service providers to offer backup services on an ETERNUS CS800. Full service: To make the setup of the whole backup environment even easier, Fujitsu offers to take care of integration in existing hardware and software environments. 3

By deploying the ETERNUS CS800 Data Protection Appliance, we have been able to increase our backup speed significantly we now manage with half as much time. In addition, the deduplication technology has made it possible to shrink our data volume drastically. Mario Friedrich, Nassauische Heimstätte / Wohnstadt Group Consolidated Backup The Challenge Traditionally, tape has been the one and only affordable storage technology for retaining valuable enterprise data. But continuous data growth, 24x7 operations, shrinking backup windows, more challenging service level requirements (RTO = Recovery Time Objectives) forced enterprises and organizations to rethink their data protection strategy. Though much more expensive than tape, the benefits of disk technology (especially its fast parallel read/write access) became a must-have in order to overcome these challenges. This resulted in mixed, often very complex and hard to manage backup infrastructures at higher costs and with limited efficiency. ETERNUS CS800 The Solution ETERNUS CS800 is a data protection appliance that consolidates various data center backup solutions using one disk system based on integrated deduplication technology. It combines the broadest scalability and highest performance with leading value and unique extensibility in order to support a wide range of IT environments today and in the future. As a purpose-built solution it covers from 4 to 320 TB of usable capacity, and provides the fastest backup performance achieving up to 13 TB/hour in conventional inline target mode, without restricting backup applications or requiring additional software installation. Benefits: One data protection solution for the entire data center with easy setup and maintenance Suited for every infrastructure environment and all marketleading backup software Advanced deduplication technology reduces disk capacity requirements by up to 95% Simultaneous backup and restore Integration of tape for long-term data retention 4

Replication / Disaster Protection Site A Site B Replication of dedup data only ETERNUS CS800 ETERNUS CS800 The Challenge In many companies backup strategies work very well for local data center backup. But this is not sufficient to ensure data protection should disaster strike. In the past small and medium-sized enterprises have not invested heavily in remote data backup that is disaster-proof because implementing and maintaining such a solution was very complex and expensive. The data volume also required extreme network bandwidth, which also added to the costs, not to mention security concerns about data theft, loss or corruption. The Solution The ETERNUS CS800 Data Protection Appliance can easily initiate automated data replication to a remote target with just a few mouse clicks. This bidirectional replication is not limited to one location but can be enhanced with parallel replication to another location or due to its multitenancy capabilities, to an ETERNUS CS800 in the data center of a cloud service provider. Advanced deduplication drastically reduces required network bandwidth up to a factor of 20. An intelligent mechanism supports efficient full remote backups by transmitting only new and modified data blocks to the target site. The system constantly transfers these new data blocks to the remote site and updates the remote copies already stored there. In addition snapshots can be taken and replicated. If necessary the data is encrypted for maximum security. Benefits: Full replication of all data is available for fast and easy system recovery in the event of a disaster. Savings from the reduced costs for storing and replicating data at both sites. Additional savings in data transmission costs are also achieved by deduplication and compression which can reduce network time requirements by up to 95%. The replication function supports fast copying of the off- site data back to the main site for complete, fast and easy data recovery. Multitenancy enables service-providers to offer ETERNUS CS800 as backup target in cloud-based disaster recovery scenarios with customer-specific monitoring and charge-back capabilities. Up to 32 replication snapshots to recover any day of an entire month Our old tape system was unreliable and prone to malfunction, and time-consuming. However, we decided we needed a standalone backup separate from the central storage that s why we selected the ETERNUS CS800. Branimir Polin, IT Operations Sector Director, DDOR Novi Sad 5

The ETERNUS CS800 is a versatile PBBA* that easily ingests backup streams from multiple sources and achieves the highest possible deduplication ratio. It allows customers to consolidate the backup environment as it offers high ingest speeds and supports simultaneous backup and recovery, and as a target it can be used by virtually any backup software in heterogeneous environments. Consolidating backup data storage onto a single scalable and high-performance appliance achieves higher capacity utilization, more effective deduplication, and easier DR setups. Source: IDC White Paper Sponsored by Fujitsu Meeting Backup and Archive Challenges Today and Tomorrow IDC #IDCWP33V October 2013 *Purpose Build Backup Appliance Branch Offices The Challenge In companies with several branch offices, each office usually backs up its own data. However, small offices often do not have the resources to make sure that backups are disaster-proof. What s more, sending data to a central data center is slow and very expensive due to high bandwidth requirements. Thus the company does not have easy access to a complete set of data collected from all sites. Site A Site B Central Data Center Site D Site C The Solution An ETERNUS CS800 backs up data locally in the branch office using deduplication. The automated replication functionality of ETERNUS CS800 ensures that copies of all data backups are stored in a central data center. The replication process is set up once and then continues automatically. Benefits: Deduplication reduces typical WAN bandwidth requirements by a factor of 20 or more Disaster recovery or retention copy is automatically encrypted and sent off-site ETERNUS CS800 at the central site handles the deduplication of all data received from branch offices to save disk space. No special skills are required in branch offices. ETERNUS CS800 is set up once and runs automatically. 6

Virtual Environments / Path-to-Tape Reduce disk needs for backup of virtual environments Backup in virtual environments is a must because most virtual servers and data are located on only a few physical servers. All data could be lost if just one physical server crashes. Virtual servers are basically files on a central storage system. And they contain redundant data, such as multiple copies of the same operating system used for various virtual machines. This makes ETERNUS CS800 the ideal backup system for such environments. The integrated deduplication reduces the amount of backup data drastically, and the replication technology makes sure that the backup data is also disaster-proof. By backing up a complete virtual machine and replicating it to a remote site, customers can restart their virtual servers at another location if disaster strikes. Path-to-Tape for long-term retention For environments that need an optimal combination of short-term backup/restore performance and economical long-term data retention, Fujitsu s ETERNUS CS800 offers the Path-to-Tape option. This integrat- ed functionality writes backup data directly from the ETERNUS CS800 to an attached tape library, without additional data transfers through the backup server. Support for Symantec OpenStorage ETERNUS CS800 support for Symantec and its OpenStorage API (OST) allows customers to set policies in NetBackup and Backup Exec that initiate data copying between different sites. In this case the replication of data between ETERNUS CS800 systems is triggered by the Symantec software and not by the appliance. Users have all the advantages of the deduplication, replication and direct tape links, but they manage the entire process conveniently and automatically from their backup application, which also provides a central catalog for all the data. For enhanced disaster recovery the OpenStorage API with AIR (Auto Image Replication) is also supported. Support for CommVault Simpana The unique ability to load a CommVault Simpana media agent on the appliance allows customers to write data directly to ETERNUS CS800 without needing extra server hardware and at reduced network traffic. Hybrid deduplication for more speed Normally deduplication takes place when the data arrives at the ETERNUS CS800 disk system. A special functionality, called SPEED mode, shifts the deduplication to a media server. The data is deduplicated there before being transferred to the ETERNUS CS800. This reduces the network requirements for the solution. 7
